To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVIS MARrNsnY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lWaist- Belts, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to belts designed for use in connection with shirtwaists and similar garments, and the object thereof is to provide an improved belt of this class which is designed to draw the shirtwaist together at the back and make it lit tightly at the tront, and which is also designed to support a skirt.

The invention is t'ully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suit-able reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional plan view showing my improved waist beltand the method of securing it to a shirtwaist and means for connecting the waistband of the skirt therewith; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. l but showing the device as used; Fig. 3 a back view or' the band forming the belt and showing hooks for supporting a skirt connected therewith; Fig. 4l; a side view o'li an attsnzhment which is connected with the bel l., and ,-Fig. 5 a similar view of another attachment which is used in connection with that shown in Fig. 4:.

In the drawing forming part of this speciication, I have shown at a a section of the waistband of a shirtwaist and at Z) the waistband of a skirt, and in the practice of my invention I provide a belt c of any suitable material, preferably textile material, and I also provide two flexible strips d and e composed of Celluloid, rubber, metal or any other suitable material. The strip (Z, in the form of construction shown, is provided with an enlarged head or end Z2 having a transverse slot d3, and the strip e is provided with an enlarged head or end c2 having two transverse slots c3 and e, the enlarged head or end Z2 of the strip d is also provided in the outer end portion thereof with a recess d* inwardly of which is secured an elastic loop Z5 while the corresponding part of the strip e,

is provided with a recess e inwardly of which is secured an elastic loop c6. In practice, the strip c is passed through the transverse slot Z3 in the part Z as indicated in Fig. l, and said part l is passed through the slots c and e* in the part c as is also indicated in said figure. I also secure to the waist band a of the shirtwaist buttons and g, said buttons being provided, in the form of construction shown with shanks, and it will be understood that when the parts d and c are connected in the manner described, they are free to slide one upon another and the belt c is secured to the end portions ZG and c7 of the parts d and c at (Z7 and es, said parts being provided with holes (ZS and do for this purpose.

In connecting the device with the waistband ot the shirtwaist at the back the outer end portions d and c7 of the parts Z and e are forced together or inwardly and this operation separates the end portions Z2 and c2 of said parts, and the elastic loops d5 and es are then engaged with the buttons f and g on the waistband a of the shirtwaist. A pull is then exerted on the end portions of the belt c and this pull draws the end portions (Z2 and c2 of the parts d and c together and contracts the waistband of the shirtwaist as shown at a2 in Fig. 2, and this operation tightens the said. waistband of the shirtwaist at the front, and the end portions ct' and c ot the belt c may be connected at the trout by means of a buckle c" il? desired, or in any other preferred manner.

The belt c or the band from which said belt is formed is provided centrally thereof with engaging devices t, with which the waistband b oit' a skirt is adapted to be connected, and these engaging devices in the form of construction shown consist of eyelets provided with upwardly directed prongs or teeth 71,2, but said engaging device may be of any desired construction.

By means o'lE my in'iproveinent I provide a belt which is adapted to be connected with the waistband or' a shirtwaist at the back and to be secured at the front, said belt being provided with means whereby the shirtwaist band may be drawn together at the back and also with means whereby a skirt may be supported at the waist and held in proper position with reference to the shirtwaist; and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, Within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

It Will be understood that the buttons and g when the device is in use, or the shanks thereof it in the recesses d* and e5 in the opposite ends of the iiexible strips Z and e and the elastic loops Z5 and e hold said parts in this position and also hold the end portions (Z2 and e2 of the parts d and e against lateral or vertical movement.

Having fully described my invention, What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A belt provided with tivo elastic strips one end of each of which is enlarged, t-he enlarged end of one of said strips being provided with a transverse slot Iand the enlarged end of the other With tivo transverse slots, the smaller end portion of one of said strips being passed through the transverse slot in the enlarged end of the other, and the smaller end of the last named strip being passed through both of the slots in the enlarged end of t-he other strip, and the smaller ends of both of said strips being secured to the inner side of said belt, and means whereby Jthe larger ends of both of said strips may be connected With the Waist band of a Waist at predetermined points.
