Be it known that it, BEN W. Mummy, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Vale, in the county of Malheur and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Record-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is a record book, that is, it is a book for preserving records of all kinds, public or private, and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

ln the accompanying drawings: liigure 1 is a view 0f the book lying open, the upper left-hand corner of the first leaf turned down and the lower right-hand corner of the second and third leaves turned up. Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view of the book on its back, the front edge cut away. Fig. 3, is a detail view of the plaited reinforced strip for holding the groups of leaves or signatures with other parts of the binding of the book.

My invention is described as follows: The numeral 1 represents the side boards of the cover of the boek. 2, t-he back cover which comes up some little distance on the side boards 1. 3, represents the marble paper that continues from the back cover and overlaps the front edges of the boards. 4, represents the plaited strip, to the inner bowed edges 5, of which, is secured, te each, the folded edges of a group of leaves 11; this group of leaves may be secured by stitches 11l or otherwise; the straight parts of said strips 6, are reinforced by filling strips 7, these strips are made of paste-board, or other stiff material, and are glued or otherwise secured to said straight parts; they perform the function of stiifening said straight parts and, at the same time, as fillers; the lower bowed portions of said strip 4t, are firmly secured to the inner back cover 8, and between the inner back cover 8, and the outer back cover 2, is a stiifening strip 9; the extreme ends of the said plaited strip 4, extend upward en the inside of the said boards 1, forming at the outer edges of said boards, hinges 10. The leaves 11, are made of transparent paper, through which any writing, drawing or other marks may be easily read. The first and second pages of the first leaf is blank while the first page of second leaf is provided at its outer edge and at its upper and lower edges with a :narrow strip of glue 12, or other adhesive matter, while its inner part near its fold is provided also with a narrow strip of glue 13, or other adhesive mat- Specication of Letters Patent.

ter, leaving a space 131 between the inner fold of said strip 13, and the folded part at the stitches 111, of said sheet; page 9., of said leaf 1 is blank; all the subsequent pairs of leaves are arranged and provided with adhesive matter eXactly like the leaves 1 and 2; for instance, the first page of leaf 3 is blank, that is, it is not provided with adhesive matter while the first page of leaf 4t, is provided with adhesive matter, same as the first page oflcaf 2 and so on throughout the book.

in practice, the record, to be preserved, is placed on the face of page 3, being careful that its edges do not come in contact with the adhesive mattei', then `he adhesive matter is dampened and the first leaf turned over on to the first page of the second leaf and sealed down.

lt will be observed by reference to Fig. :2, that the book when empty is wider at its back than at its front side, but when the records are slipped in between the leaves, the book is swelled out until the front edge is as thick as the back edge and the stiifcning strips and fillers 7, are put 'in to lill up the rear hinge or spur part of the book; the space left between the inner strip 13, of adhesive matter and its folded part is for the purpose of letting the pair of leaves of that particular part be thin, thus forming a pliable hinge, so that the leaves will lie out. flat and the records may be easily read, where the writing or drawing' is on both sides of a sheet of paper, the front side may be read first and leaf turned over and then the back side read. lf there be more than one sheet of record the second sheet is placed between the next pair of leaves and so on. lt will be seen by this arrangement, that the records are kept from being defaccd by usage and in being protected from dust and handling and the records are also kept from being tampered with.

lt is immaterial whether the adhesive matter be put on the third sheet of the pair of leaves or the second sheet. lt is suflicient if it be put on either page.

Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;

1. A book for the reception and preservation of records, comprising a back and covers, transparent leaves secured at their inner edges to the back and arranged in pairs, one leaf of each pair of leaves having on its face a line of adhesive material adj aeent its edges whereby the leaves of each 'pair niay be secured together to forni inclosed pockets, substantially as described.

2. Abook for the recept-ion and preservation of records, comprising a back and Covers, transparent leaves secured at their inner edges to the back and arranged in pairs, one leaf of each pair of leaves having on its face a line or" adhesive material adjacent its edges, the line oi' adhesive material adjacent the inner edge being slightly spaced therefrom to provide a hinge section', whereby the leaves of each pair inay be secured together to forni inclosed pockets, substantially as described.
