Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
Application filed December 13, 1909. Serial No. 532,959.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. SoHRonnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined lock and latch, and particularly to a device of this character adapted for use upon boxes and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined lock and latch, embodying a member adapted to serve as a lift.
My invention consists generally of an upper and lower plate adapted to be secured to the lid and body of the trunk respectively, said upper plate being provided with a lift member, and means for detachably securing said plates together.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numeral references are used to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a front view of my device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper plate and members associated therewith. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of a slightly modified form of a portion of my device. Fig. 5 is a front view of one of the members illustrated in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of another member illustrated in Fig. 4.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as shown, 1 and 2 designate upper and lower body plates which are provided with openings 3 and f1, and are adapted to be secured by means of screws or the like upon the lid and body portion of a box respectively, said screws extending through the openings 3 and 4. The upper body plate 1 tapers upwardly -t'o form a reduced portion 5 which is bent outwardly and downwardly to form the curved lift member G. The upper body plate 1 is further provided upon its middle portion adjacent the lower edge thereof with a forwardly projecting retaining lug 7, which is provided centrally thereof with the downwardly projecting slotted bolt 8. The lower body plate 2 has suitably secured upon its outer side a centrally arranged lock, comprising a rectangular casing 9 provided with a key-hole 10. The lower plate 2 tapers slightly downwardly as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a straight upper horizontal edge 11, adjacent to which terminates the upper end of the casing 9 above referred to. The casing 9 and the retaining lug 7, as shown in Fig. 1, are arranged in alinement with and adjacent to cach other when the fastener is in its locked position.
The lock casing 9 is provided near the lower end thereof with a pivotally mounted U-shaped retaining member, the sides 12 of which are journaled in opposing sides of said locked casing 9. The U-shaped retainmg member is adapted to fit around the lock casing 9 and the retaining lug 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, whereby the upper and lower plates 1 and 2 will be detaehably secured together. The U-shaped retaining member is provided upon the upper portion thereof with a reduced portion 13 which is bent outwardly and slightly downwardly, to form a gripping member. It is to be understood that the slotted bolt S secured upon the retaining lug 7, is inserted within the lock casing 9, whereby the upper and lower plates 1 and 2 may be locked together.
In the modified form of my invention, I provide an upper body plate 141 having a tapering upper portion which is bent forwardly and downwardly to form a lift member 15. The upper body plate 14 has a straight lower horizontal edge 1G and is provided with alined openings 17 which are equidistant from the edge 1G. Arranged upon the outer side of the plate 14; is seciind plate 1S provided with openings 19 and a lower straight horizontal edge 20. The openings 19 are adapted to register with the opening 17, and the plates 111 and 1S are secured upon the lid of the box by means of screws or the like, which pass through the registering openings 17 and 19. The Vlower edge 2O of plate 18 is adapted to coincide with the correspoinling edge 1G of plate 14, as shown in Fig. 4, and'plate 1S is provided with a retaining lug 21 suitablv secured thereto adjacent the Aedge 20, said retaining lug 21 being provided with a de pending slotted boltA 22.
lt is to be understood that the modified form of my invention as shown in Fig. -l-, is adapted to cor'iperate with the lower body plate 2, in precisely the same manner as the device shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, I claim Tn a device of the character described, upper and lower body plates arranged upon the .lid and body of a box respectively, said third plate being provided with aretaining `10 lug, and means connected With the lower plate to engage the retaining lug.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT F. SCHROEDER. Witnesses:
AUGUSTA MARoossoN, LEONARD WV. SMITH.
upper plate being provided With a plurality of openings, a third plate removably arranged upon the upper plate and provided With openings in registration with said openings upon said upper plate, screws to extend through said openings to detachably secure the upper and third plate together and to said lid, said upper plate having a portion thereof bent to form a lift, saidl
