Description

DE L. KENNEDY, Jia Device for Attaching Cheeks to Baggage.
No. 197,222. t Patented Nov. 20,1877
N-PEERS. PHOTO-UTKOGRAFHER. WASHINOYDN. D CA UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
DE LANCY KENNEDY, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR ATTACHING CHECKS T0 BAGGAGE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 197,222, dated November 20, 1877 g application filed June 7, 1877.
To all uhom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, DE LANGY KENNEDY, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented an Improved Method of At-V taching Checks to Baggage, of which the following is a speciiication:
The object of this invention is to provide a means of attaching checks to baggage in such a manner that they cannot be detached by accident, or be removed or exchanged audulently or maliciously; and it consists in a metallic plate and a hinged hasp, provided with a slot in the one and a tongue or prongs on the other for holding the check, and a lock or latch for securing it, said device to be applied at the end or other suitable and convenient part of the trunk or other baggage and securely fast- A cned thereto.
I will now describe my invention by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a face view of my device with a check interposed. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same with the hasp raised, also having its closed position shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line w of Fig. 1.
The same letters appearing on the several figures indicate like parts.
A represents the plate to be secured to the trunk or chest, by screws or rivets a, which are inaccessible when the hasp is closed. This plate may be recessed, as at A', to receive the look B', attached to the hasp B, which latter is hinged to the plate A at e. About mid-length of the plate A is a slot, I), of about the same size as the slots usually made in baggagechecks; and in a corresponding position, on the inner side of the hasp, is formed a tongue or prongs, c, which, when said hasp is closed, pass through the slot in the check and enter the slot b in the plate A, the hasp being retained in its closed position by a spring-latch or other suitable locking device, only to be disengaged by the appropriate key.
Instead of the plate A being recessed to receive the box-lock B', as above described, it may be formed with a staple to pass through a slot in the hasp B, when the latter may be securely closed by a padlock. By this means the check C is safely attached, with its number exposed to view, and can only be removed by the person having the right to do so.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hinged hasp provided with atongue or prongs to pass through the slot or holes in a baggage-check, and a lock or other suitable device for securing it, in combination with a baggage-check, substantially as described.
2. A plate, A, to be rmly secured to the baggage, and provided with ahinged hasp, B, having a tongue or prongs to hold the interposed check, and a lock or other suitable device for securing it, substantially as specified.
