UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OI-IN B. DUGUID, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
FASTENER FOR TELESCOPIC TRAVELlNG-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,829, dated October 2, 1894. Application filed December 26, 1893. Serial No. 494,654. (No model.)
To all whom iz? may concern.-
Be in known that I, JOHN B. Ducoin, of
Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Telescopic Traveling-Oases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will venable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the gures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to afastener for' telescoplc traveling cases, and has for its object to provlde a fastener which shall secure the sections together at any point and conslsts 1n plates secured to the body portion Vof the case, said` plates being provided with a plurality cf non-circular openings along the length of the same, the topfof the case belng provlded'with catches for. co-action rwith the openings by which the top and body are secured together at any point.
The invention further consists in the parts shown, described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a telescopic traveling case, showing my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body plate. Fig. 3 1s a front elevation of the catch removed from theXtop of the case. Fig. 4 is a like view of the rear side of the same. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation through a portion of the/top of the case, showing the catch in section. Flg. 6 is a front elevation of the combined catch and lock, detached from the top of the case. Fig. 7 is a like View with the covering for the lock removed.
1 designates the body portion, and 2 the top portion of the telescopic case. -To the body portlon upon each side and near each end are secured the body plates 3, which are formed with the side flanges 4, connected by the raised face plate 5, and in the side of/said flanges are perforations 6, through which pass rivets by which the body plate is secured to the body of the case. In the raised face plate 5 of the body plate is a series of diamond shaped openings 7 along the length of the same, the said openings being preferably horizontal to the width of the plate.
8 designates a catch which comprises a plate .9, having anannular flange 10, the plate being bent outwardly forming an annular shoulder 11, and then inwardly forming a hollow centerv 12.
Top 2 of the case is cut out, as at 13, and
the plate 9 is inserted therein, the flange 10 resting upon the edge of the annular opening in the case, and is riveted thereto by rivets 11.1E passing through perforations 15 in the flange, and through the top of the case. Journaled in the plate 9 is a pin 16, having on the outer end of the same a thumb piece 17, the outer side of the thumb piece being preferably lower than the shoulder 11, and upon the inner end of the pin 16 is. secured the diamond shaped catch 18, which is of ysubstantially the same shape as the openings 7, in the body plate, there being space left between the catch 18 and the plate 9 equal to the thickness of the body plate.
The preferred methodof securing the top consists in providing the top with two catches, each at diametrically opposite corners, the remaining corners having a combined catch and lock.
In the combined catch and lock, the catch is identical with the one just described, with the exception, that one end of the thumb piece 17 has a recess 19, and the plate 9 elongated to receive a locking bolt 20, which is held in place by staples 21 and 22, there being a spring 23 engaging the bolt by which to hold the same in a locked and unlocked position.
To lock or unlock the catch, a key is inserted in the key-hole 24 of a plate 25 secured to the plate 9, which serves to cover the lock and' prevent access thereto when the bolt can be drawn or re-drawn to lock or unlock the catch. In order to serve as a further protection' against tampering with the' lock, the lower end of the plate 25, has inwardly projecting anges 26, leaving a space 27 through which the thumb piece may revolve in catching or releasing the plate 18 from the opening in the body plate.
In operation the body of the case being filled, the top is telescopically secured thereon, and is forced downwardly until the contents of the case have the desired compression, when the plate 18 (which is previously turned ICO horizontal in the same alignment as the open lugs in the body plate) when the catch is inserted in the openings 7 in the body plate opposite the same, and the thumb piece is tnrned, thereby fastening the top securely to place, and if it is desired to lock the top, a key is inserted in the key hole 24, and the bolt is thrown into recess 19 in the thumb pieces of the catch when the catch is locked.
It will be seen that I may employ catches and dispense with the lock. It will be also seen that the opening 7 may have any inelination or be of any shape, the plate 18 having the same shape and being at the same angle, without departing from the spirit of my 1nvention.
What I claim isl. In a telescospic traveling case, a body, body plates secured thereto, each having a raised face plate, a plurality of non-circular openings along the length of the face plates, a top, plates secured thereto, pins j onrnaled in the plates, having a thumb piece for revolving the same, catches upon the inner ends of a size and shape of the openings, whereby when they are inserted therein and revolved, the pins engage the sides of the openings and the catches engage with the inside of the face plates, holding the pins in engaged position with the face plate.
In a telescopic traveling case, a body, body plates secured thereto havingaplurality of non-circular openings along the length of the same, a top, plates secured thereon, pins journaled in the plates, a thumb piece upon the pins for revolving the same, an elongated catch upon the inner end, of asize and shape corresponding to the openings in the body plate, whereby when the catch is inserted and turned, it engages with the inside of the body plate, said catch being at its widest point approximately the size of the pin, whereby the top is held from vertical movement.
3. In a telescopic traveling case, a body, body plates secured thereto, each having a raised face plate, a plurality of non-circular openings along the length of the face plates, a top, plates secured thereto, pins journaled in the plates, having a thumb piece for revolving the same, catches upon the inner ends, of a size and shape of the openings, whereby when they are inserted therein and revolved, the pins engage the sides of the openings and the catches engage With the inside of the tace plate, holding the pins in engaged position with the face plate, and a lock for the catch.
4:. In a telescopic traveling case, a body, body plates secured thereto havingaplurality ot' non-circular openings along the length of the same, a top, plates secured thereto, pins journaled in the plate having a thumb piece for revolving the same, and a catch upon the inner end of the same of a size and shape to enter the openings in the body plate, and when turned, engage therewith, a bolt movably secured in the top plate, and means whereby when it is moved forward it engages with the recess in the thumb piece, locking the catch in an engaged position. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. DUGUID.
