Description

S. A. HUGHES.
LABEL-HOLDER.
No 185,680, Patented Dec. 26, 1876.
wnuissm 7 mm n= HE GRAPHIC BGJLY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. HUGHES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LABEL-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,680, dated December 26, 1876; application filed September 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. HUGHES,
of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gard-Plate for Trunks, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view; Fig. 2,a bottom view; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the back plate, in section through lines 3/ y of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is designed to furnish an improved card plate for trunks, carpetbags, satchels, 850., so that the card wit-h name, address, &c., may be readily inserted and securely retained, the inclosingplate being strong enough to resist the strain and wear to which it is exposed in handling the trunks or other package. v
Theinvention consists of a metal frame with raised guide-molding, open at one side for the card, which is retained by a spring-acted bottom plate, and locked by a suitable spring catch or device.
[n the drawing, A represents a cast-metal frame of suitable size and ornamentation, which is attached by screws, rivets, or otherwise, to the trunk, satchel, or other package. The frame A is provided with a raised mold ing, a, that is open at one side for the introduction of the card, which is guided and retained in position by the remaining sides. A
back or bottom plate, B, is arranged below the guide-molding and pressed up against the card and its passing along the guide-frame and back plate. The spring-plate gives somewhat when the card is inserted, and exerts a pressure of suflicient power on the same to prevent the playingout and detaching of the card from the frame.
When it is desired to secure the card in such a manner to the frame that it cannot be lost or removed by any possibility, a springcatch, 0, is arranged at the open edge of the guide-molding, which retains the card until withdrawn. The spring-catch 0 may be withdrawn either by pressing on a stud or button, (shown in the drawing,) or by means of a key that releases the spring from the card. Shoulders or raised studs e at both sides of the spring-button protect the same against being depressed, and prevent the catch from being opened accidentally by other articles placed thereon.
The card-frame is capable of resisting any shocks to which it may be exposed by the handling of trunks, &c., in traveling. It has no parts that may be broken or injured, and forms thereby a more reliable, stronger, and neater device than the card-plates heretofore in use. The device may also be applied as door plate, sign plate, and for similar purposes.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of frame A, provided with raised molding a, open at one side, the back plate B, pressed up by band-springs b, and the strips d, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
SAML. A. HUGHES. Witnesses:
