.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Lnvr L. FUNK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, suflicient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.

This invention relates to fans held in and operated by the hand.

The objects of the invention are, principally, to obtain a fan made entirely of card board or heavy paper which will be light in weight, easily held, economically made, of pleasing appearance, and which can be easily packed for shipment, either in a made up or partially made up form.

In the drawing hereinbefore referred to Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the device embodying the invention is obtained. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device embodying the invention. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modification of the device illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are end elevations of the handle of the device, partially folded.

A reference letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.

A is a blank having the circular portion a integral with the handle portion a and sepa rated by cuts B, C, and D, from parts E, e, F, f, G, g, of the handle of the device.

H, h, are hooks on the upper end of part Parts E, F, G, and a are defined by the scored lines K, L, M, and parts 6, f, g, by the scored lines 70, Z, m.

I, J, and j, are cuts in blank A.

When the several parts E, F, G, and e, f, g, are folded, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, on lines K, L, M, 76, Z, m, the upper end of the part G may be put through the cut I and the hook H may be put through the cut J, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The upper end of the part 9 is also put through the cut I, and hook it put through the cut The upper ends of parts G, g, are thus held to part A.

N, n, Fig. 2, are wire staples holding the several parts of the handle together at the middle and lower end thereof.

In the modification of the device illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 the hooks H, h, at the upper ends of the parts G, g, are omitted, (asis indicated by broken lines 0, 0, Fig. 1), and the several cuts'I, J, j, in part a of the blank A are not made. Adhesive material is applied on the upper side of parts a, E, F, G, and on the underside of parts 6, f, g, and said parts are folded as illustrated in Fig. 6 and secured together by said adhesive material or by Wire staples (N, 12,) as shown in Fig. 2.

The several parts E, F, G, a, c, f, 9, may if preferred, be folded as illustrated in Fig. 7, and in such case adhesive material is placed on the several parts a, F, G, as hereinbefore described, and also on the under face of parts F, G. Adhesive material is placed on the under side of parts a, f, g, and on the upper side of parts f, 9, also. When thus folded the under faces of E and F come together and the upper face of a and the under face of G, and the part G is underneath part F and part F is underneath part E. Part G is on one side of part a and part 9 is on the other side of said part a. Part 9 is next to said part a, and underneath part 7, and said part f is underneath part c. All the several parts are secured by adhesive material. In whatever way the several parts E, F, G, and e, f, g, are folded the folds are made substantially on the scored lines indicated by broken lines K, L, M, and 70, Z, m, respectively.

The parts I, Q, 10, g, are illustrated in Fig. 1 as being separated from the paper or card board forming the part a by the circular contour line B of said part a, and separated from parts E, e, F, f, and so going to Waste, but the separation of said parts P, Q, p, g, from part a is not essential.

aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is,

1. As a new article of manufacture, a fan consisting of a body part made of a layer of flexible material, and a handle integral with said body part and made of a number of layers of flexible material, the layers of the handle obtained by folding said material over on itself, with a layer of said handle extending along the faces of the body part and secured thereto, and the layers of the handle secured together.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a fan having a body part made of a layer of flexible material and a handle integral with said I body part and made of a plurality of layers of said flexible material, with a layer of the handle extending out therefrom and along one face of the body part and an additional layer extending out from the handle and along the other face of the body part, the layers of said handle secured together and to the faces of the body part.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a fan provided with a handle, said handle integral with the body part, and consisting of a plurality of layers of flexible material secured together by adhesive material on their meeting faces, and said body part reinforced by layers of said handle extending out therefrom and along the faces of said body part and secured thereto by adhesive material.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a body part of flexible material, and a handle integral with said body part and consisting of a number of layers of said flexible material, said layers which form the handle made of different lengths with a plurality thereof extending over and onto the body part, the layers of said handle being attached together and the portions of said layers which are on the body part being attached to said body part.
