Description

BOOKMARK Filed Dec. 20, 1939 II!!! I! IIIIIIIII lN VENT OR M'llidm. Brenner ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1941 2,265,798 BOOKMARK William Brummer, Brooklyn, N. Y. 7 Application December 20, 1939, Serial No. 310,119
4 Ciaims. (CL 116-119) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a book mark. I
The invention has for an object the construction of a book mark which is characterized by a right angle triangularly shaped body having a pair of side walls connected together on two sides and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed upon the corner of the cover of a book, and supporting a flexible element adapted to be placed between the pages of a book to keep a mark. v i
More specifically, the invention proposes to construct the triangular shaped body from triangular shaped cardboard layers, and a sheet of decorative paper covering the layers.
The invention also contemplates forming the flexible element previously mentioned in the form of a ribbon.
As another object of the invention, it is proposed to mount or secure the said ribbon upon the said body in a novel fashion.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book with a book mark mounted thereon, which is constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevational View of the book shown in Fig. 1 opened up to illustrate the book mark from another direction.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the book mark per se.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a book mark constructed in accordance with a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the flexible element of the book mark shown in Fig. 5.
The book mark, according to this invention, includes a right angle triangularly shaped body It] having a pair of side walls ll! and lfl connected together on two sides 10 and I0" and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed on the corner ll of the cover ll of a book. A flexible element I2 is secured at one end to the body l0 and is adapted to be placed between the pages I l of the book to keep a mark.
The walls Ill and It of the body I0 include 'ribbonis securedatitsinner end 2 tothe body in the following fashion: It passes through an opening M in the back of the body I0 and then extends in between one of the interior layers of the body, such as layer In, and the outer covering material [0 At this point it is cemented, or fixedly secured in position, in some manner.
The triangularly shaped body I!) may be engaged upon a top or bottom corner of the cover of the book, or it may be engaged upon a group of pages of the book. The flexible element l2 may be engaged in between any adjacent pair of pages to keep a mark.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the manner in which the flexible element I2 is mounted upon the body l0. More specifically, the inner end of the flexible element I2 is bent upwards into a loop portion I2. A line of stitches l5 secure the adjacent contacting portions together to hold the loop in its formation. An element in the form of a pin I 6 passes through the loop portion. This pin has transversely projecting portions l'l spaced inwards slightly from the ends thereof.
The ribbon 12 passes through the opening H in one edge of the body l0, and the extreme ends l6 of the pin l6 pass through a pair of slots l8 and IS formed in one of the walls of the body 10. The transverse projections I! are slightly larger than the slots so as to prevent the pin Hi from shifting axially in one direction or the other, and accidentally become completely displaced from the flexible element l2 and the body [0.
The ribbon I2 may be removed by bowing the pin l6, which preferably is made of relatively flexible wire so as to draw in the ends l6 and disengage the ends from the slots l8 and I8". Then the ribbon 12 may be pulled through the opening 14. The same ribbon or a new ribbon may be replaced on the body, as desired. In other respects this form.- of the invention is similar to the previous form.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A book mark comprising a right angle triangularly shaped body having a pair of side walls connected together on two sides and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed on a corner of the cover of a book, a flexible element secured at one end to said body and adapted to be placed between the pages of said book, the inner end of said flexible element being formed with a loop, a flexible pin engaged through said loop, and the ends of said pin engaging in slots ,formed in one of the walls of said body.
2. A book mark comprising a right angle triangularly shaped body having a pair of side walls connected together on two sides and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed on a corner of the cover of a book, a flexible element secured at one end to said body and adapted to be placed between the pages of said book, the
inner end of said flexible element being formed with a loop, a flexible pin engaged through said .loop, and the ends of said pin engaging in slots formed in one. of the walls of said body, and said pin having transverse portions near its ends larger than said slots to hold the pin from accidentally disengaging from the slots.
3. A book mark, comprising a right angle triangularly shaped body having a pair of side walls connected together on two sides and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed on a corner of the cover of a book, a flexible element having one end passed through an opening formed in one side of said body to be disposed between said side walls and its free end engageable between the pages of said book, said flexible element having its end disposed between said side walls formed with a loop, and an element extended through said loop and connected to one of said side walls for releasably attaching said flexible element to said body.
4. A book mark, comprising a right angle tri angularly shaped body having a pair of side walls connected together on two sides and open on the hypotenuse side and adapted to be placed on a corner of the cover of a book, a flexible element having one end passed through an opening formed in one side of said body to be disposed between said side walls and its free end engageable between the pages of said book, and a pin mounted on the end of said flexible element disposed between said side walls and having its ends engaged in spaced slots formed in one of said side walls for releasably attaching said flexible element to said body. 7
