Description
March, 1941. M. BRAFF TAB DEVICE FOR AIRING PILLOWS Filed May 51, 1940 ii Q.
INVENTOR Marlin B Patented Mar. 4, 1941 UNITED STATES PTENT OFFICE 2,234,072 TAB DEVICE. FOR AIRING PILLOWS Martin Bran, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 31, 1940, Serial No. 337,981
4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a tab device for airing pillows.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a tab device attached to a pillow in a novel manner for permitting the same to be utilized for hanging the pillow upon a conventional clothes line without the use of clothes pins or similar attaclriing devices.
Still further it is proposed to characterize the tab device by a pair of adjacent tabs secured to the binding strip of the pillow and arranged in a manner to extend along one face of the pillow when not in use.
Still further it is proposed to arrange the tabs so that they may bend to project beyond the edge of the pillow and to provide the adjacent faces thereof with fasteners capable of releasably connecting the free ends of the tabs together to cause the tabs to encircle a clothes line and hold the pillow in position thereon.
Still further a modification of the invention proposes an arrangement whereby the tabs are cut from a strip of material attached to the edge,
of the pillow and arranged in a manner to be 'releasably held in an inoperative position adjacent the faces of said'pillow.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pillow having a tab device according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the position of the tabs when the pillow is hung upon a clothes line.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of a pillow having a tab device constructed according to a still further modification of the invention.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional View on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
The tab device for holding pillows, according to this invention, is adapted to be used in combination with a pillow 10 having a binding strip II. The pillow l0 comprises adjacent pieces of material Ill having their edges connected together by means of binding strips ll and which is filled with feathers Hl or other filling in the conventional manner.
The tab device is characterized by a pair of adjacenttabs I2 which are secured in position between one face of one of the layers l0 and the adjacent face of the binding strip I I. These tabs 12 are maintained in position by means of stitches l3 which securely attach the binding strip H to the pillow Ill. The binding strip II is substantially U-sha-ped in cross section and engaged on the edge portions of the pillow the stitches l3 are utilized for securely maintaining the same in position thereon.
The adjacent faces of the tabs l2 are provided with snap fastener elements 14 for releasably connecting together the free ends of the tabs I2. The fastener element I4 is characterized by asnap fastener having the male element mountedupon one endof the tabs [2 and the female element on the other of the tabs l2. The association between the snap fastener elements I4 is such that a clothes line l5 may be passed between the adjacent faces of the tabs l2 and the snap fasteners engaged with each other for securely holding the pillow ID in position upon the line l5 for permitting the same to be thoroughly aired.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4 the construction of the tab device is similar to that previously described except that the tabs [2' are arranged on opposite sides of the pillow l0 and are securely held in position between the adjacent faces of the layers Ill and the binding strip H on opposite sides of the pillow. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the construction of the tab device is arranged to be used in combination with a pillow having a binding strip 2| mounted upon the edges thereof for closing the sides of the pillow. This binding strip 2| is held in position by means of stitches 22. The tab device is characterized by a strip of cloth material 23 engaged beneath the binding strip 22 and having side portions 23 extending from the edges of the binding strip 2| along opposite sides of the pillow 20. One end of this strip of cloth material 23 is doubled upon itself, as indicated at 23 in Fig. 5. Tabs 24 are cut from the opposite projecting side portions 23" of the strip 23 and the free ends thereof are arranged to extend over the doubled under end 23".
Each of the tabs 24 is provided with a snap fastener element 25 which is adapted to cooperate with a complementary snapfastener element 26 arranged upon the adjacent face of the doubled under end 23 for holding the tabs 24 in an inoperative position. However, the snap fasteners 25 and 26 are adapted to be disengaged for permitting the tabs 24 to be bent into a position illustrated in dot and dash lines 24' in Fig. for projecting the free ends of the tabs 24 beyond the edges of the pillow 20 to permit the same to be used for attaching the pillow to a conventional clothes line. The snap fasteners 25 and 26 are so arranged that one of the tabs 24 carries a male snap fastener element 25* and the other carries a female snap fastener element 25 for permitting the tabs to be used .for holding the pillow in position upon the clothes line.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself tothe precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined .in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patentv is:
1. A tab device for .airing pillows, comprising a pillow having a binding strip sewed upon' its edges, a strip engaged beneath said binding strip and having side portions extending from the sides of .said binding strip, tabs cut from said side portions and extending over an inturned end portion of said strip, and fasteners releasably securing said tabs and inturned end portions together and adapted to connect the tabs together in extended positions. v
2. A tab device for airing pillows, comprising a pillow having a binding strip sewed upon its edges, a strip engaged beneath said binding strip and having side portions extending from the sides of said binding strip, tabs cut from said side portions and extending over an inturned end portion of said strip, and fasteners releasably securing said tabs and inturned end portions together and adapted to connect the tabs together in extended positions, said fasteners comprising snap fastener elements arranged to permit said tabs in their extended positions to be used for holding said pillow in position upon a clothes line.
3. A tab device for airing pillows, comprising a pillow having a binding strip'sewed upon its edges, a strip engaged beneath said binding strip and having side portions extending from the sides of said binding strip, tabs cut from said side portions and extending over an inturned end portion of said strip, and means releasably securing said tabs and inturned end portions together and adapted to connect the tabs together in extended positions.
4. A tabdevice for airing pillows, comprising a pillow, a strip mounted on one edge of said pillow and having side portions extending along opposite sides of said pillow, tabs cut from said strip and extending over an inturned end portion of said strip, and fasteners releasably securing said tabs and inturned end portions together and adapted to connect the tabs together in extended positions.
