BOOK COVER Filed June 22. 1932 INVENTOR .M4/v jf/L25.
Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED STATES MAX naiss.. or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Boox COVER `Application led June 22,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book covers, and moreparticularly it pertains to protective covers for books. f
A feature of the invention resides in a nove construction whereby a book cover constructed in accordance with the present invention may be used with books of various sizes within certain limitations.
A further feature of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the protective cover may be readily attached to or removed from a book with ease and facility.
A still further feature of the invention resides in a construction which is cheap and economical of manufacture and highly eilicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention in its preferred form and the following detailed description of the construction therein shown.
In the drawing;
Figure l is a perspective View of a book with a cover constructed in accordance with the present invention partially attached thereto, and illustrating the manner in which the protective cover is retained in position upon the book,
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation of a book having a protective cover constructed in accordance with the present invention, attached thereto, and;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
A book cover constructed in accordance with the present invention consists of a rectangular sheet of suitable flexible material which constitutes the main body portion 5 of the cover.
The sheet ordinarily would be of greater length than width although other shapes of blanks may at times be resorted to in the manufacture of covers for use on books of other than standard shapes and sizes.
1932. serial N. 618,628.
book cover receiving pockets l1 at each end 55 I of the cover. It is to be understood that the lines of fold 10 are not lixed, but are Vdetermined solely by the size of the book cover to which the protective cover is to be attached,
thus rendering each protective cover capable AV of use on books of many different sizes:
When the sheet has been folded inwardly to provide the pockets 11, a book cover suchv as 15 is inserted into the pocket at one end as illustrated in Figure 1` of the drawin 05 yafter which the protective cover is wrapped around the book and the other cover 16 'of the book inserted into the coverreceiving pocket at the other end of the blank. The protective cover may now be adjusted with relation to the book so that it will lie smoothly thereon as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. v
Means is provided toretain the protective cover against accidental displacement or undue shifting relative to the bookv cover and as herein illustrated, this means consists of longitudinally extensible strips l5, each of which has a hook 16 for engagement with the end edges of the book covers.`
These extensible strips l5, I prefer to construct from elastic webbing and they are secured to the inner face 8 of the blank at each corner thereof as at 18, with the `longitudinal 'F 4 axis of each strip extendingsubstantially at i places the strips15 under sufficient tension to :tween the'book coversand the adjacent porfrom relatively thin stiff material such as light metal, celluloid or the like and are securedto the free ends of the strips in any desired manner.
When the protective ycover has been applied to a book as above described, the strips 15 and their hooks 16 will be positioned between the book covers and the adjacent portions of the protective cover with the hooks 16 unattached to the book covers, although in placing the protective cover on the book, two of the hooksmayV be engaged with. the book. covers before the protective cover is completely positioned thereon as illustrated in Figure 1.V With the parts in the position described, it is only necessary to partiallyfopen the book in which position all of the strips and hooks will become accessible and may-be engaged with the book coversto secure the protective cover in position.
Itwill benoted that in attaching the vhooks tothebookcovers,- each liookis engaged with that edgeof the book cover opposed to the edge adjacent the attachment of the strip by -which the hook is carried. This operation insure against accidental displacement of the hooks relative to the book covers thereby lholding-theY protective cover in place upon the book and also stretching it smoothly thereover.
When the protective cover has been finally positioned upon a book,v the strips 15 and the major. portions of the hooks 16 will lie betions of the protective cover andwill be hiddenfrom view except for a small portion ofeach hook as illustrated'in Figure 2.
From the foregoing, it willA be apparent that the present invention provide-s a new andnovelprotective cover forbooks which is capable of use with books of different sizes, which is easily. and quickly removable or attachable to booksand which,y when in positionupon la book, will be held securely iny proper positionr thereon.
While the invention has beenA herein d1s.
/closed in a preferred form, it is to be understood that itisnot to be construed as limited tothe specific construction herein shown, and that it may be embodied in suchfother forms as rightfully fall within the scope of the appendedfclaims.
Having thus described the invention, whatV is claimed as new, and what itV is desired to secure by Letters Patent: of the United States, is
,1. A protective cover for books comprising a rectangular sheet of suitable material vadapted to be folded to receive the covers of a book, and means carried by each side yof said sheet for engagement with a bookV cover for holding the protective cover in position upon a book.
2.Y A.r protective coverV for bookslcomprising,
i holding the protective cover in position upon a book, said last mentioned means comprismglongitudinally extensible members,` and a hook for engagement with an edge of a book cover, there being a hook carried by each of said longitudinally eXtensible members.
4. A protective cover for books, comprisinga rectangular sheet of flexible material, andfmeans'at each. corner of said sheet for attachment of the coverto a book, said means comprising an elastic strip secured at one end to the innerk facey ofthe protective cover and having afree end, and abook cover engaging hook carriedby the. freeV end of eachV ofsaid elastic strips.
5. In combination with a book, a removable protective cover therefor, said protective cover comprising a rectangular sheet of flexible materialhaving its side edges foldedF inwardly of its vbodyportionto provide open book cover, receiving pockets, vanelastic strip secured to yeach end of eachinwardly foldedy side edge yand'extendingtransversely of the sheetavnd a book cover engaging hook secured to theV free endof each of saidelastic strips.
