BOOK-COVER PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JARRETTE. THOMP- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, county of Fulton, State of Georgia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boole Cover Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements inbook cover protectors and has for am object to provide a novel and practical, yet

simple form of book cover protector whose arrangement and construction is such as will permit the same to be successfullyemployed as a covering for books of different sizes, being reinforced at the ends and corners and affording a smooth and continuous or =unbroken exposed surface, thereby lending to the periodof practical usage of the same as well as giving absolute protection to the book cover proper.

It is likewise an object ofthe invention to provide a book cover protector having portions of the same, namely, at the corners and centers of the upper and lower ends thereof, cut and forming tongues, which, in turn, are supplied with guide markings whereby to facilitatethe fitting of the pro tector to a book cover, as well as the accu rate folding of such cover protector and tongues during the process of fitting it'over a book cover.

Other objects of theinvention will-be in part obvious, and in part pointed out liere' inafter.

10 and 11 are provided with transversely disposed relatively spaced and parallel guide markings or lines generally indicated by the numeral 13, each of said guide lines or markings being appropriately designated by numerals 1%, or other suitable nomenclature in order that they may be accurately marked and folded during a fitting of the cover protector to a book cover, and if properly measured to other book covers the same size without remeasuring.

In using a book cover protector constructed in accordance with those several formsof the invention shown in the Figures 1 and 3, it will be understood that the sheet 1, chosen at this time, for purposes of illustration, is laid upon a supporting surface with the markings upon the various tongues uppermost. An openbook is placed in the center of the cover protector and is pressed open on the cover and held substantially flat in such position whereupon suitable markings are inscribed upon the face portions of the sheet 1., that is, tongues 2 and a and 3 and 5, about one-fourth of an inch from the corners of the book cover, allowing siuiicient to prevent folding corner tongues too short to cover all corners of the book cover. Also, suit-able markings are made upon the

10 and 11 or 10 and 11' as the case may be, in order that the length of the book may be accurately recorded upon the pro tector, allowance being made in these latter markings for a distance of one one-sixteenth of an inch beyond the opposite ends of the book cover in order that the protector will fully cover the same and will have slight portions thereof extended beyond the book ends whereby to best protect the same. lVith the sheet 1 marked in the manner prescribed upon the tongues 2, 3, at and 5 and

In a similar manner, the opposite side of the sheet constituting the llO book cover protector is folded over the opposite side of the book cover, that is, the top and bottom portions between the corner tongues 2 and 4E and the

10 and 11 or 10. and 11' are folded inwardly upon a straight line and over the book cover and finally, with folding of the intermediate portions of the sheet upon themselves in the manner hereinbefore described, the adhesively coated extremities 9 of the intermediate side portions are then moistened and pressed into permanent engagement with adjacent portions of the folded intermediate top and bottom portions of the sheet 1.

In the Figure 7, have shown yet another modified form of my improved book cover protector, wherein one side, the left side as shown herein, of the cover protector is partially folded and sealed. The upper or top of this particular side of the book cover protector is left open and with proper marking of the graduated top tongue 1"? which is then folded inwardly and transversely upon itself in the manner hereinbefore described, said left side of the folded cover protector sheet, indicated for the purpose of convenience by the reference numeral 1 is then folded along a straight line and over the adjacent upper end of the book cover received therein, whereupon an adhesively coated extremity 18 of the intermediate side piece 19 is moistened and pressed into permanent contact with the adj acent part of such folded portion.

The opposite or remaining and right side of this sheet 1 is formed with diagonally disposed tongues 3 and 5' havin ruled transversely thereof a plurality of relatively spaced parallel guide lines or markings 7 which in turn are adapted to be indicated by numerals or other suitable nomenclature 8 diagonal corner tongues 3' and 5' is such as to provide an intermediate piece 20, whose opposite extremities are coated on one face with an adhesive 21.

Thus, it will be understood that with engagement of the left side of the book cover in the left and partly folded side of the sheet 1 the opposite side of this cover is adapted to be covered by the protector by first marking the guide lines or markings 7 upon the tongues 8 and 5', then folding such tongues along the indicated guide markings inwardly and transversely of thenr selves, whereupon the intermediate top and bottom portions of the right side of the sheet 1 are folded upon themselves on a straight lineaover the top and bottom of the book cover so as to be arranged adjacent but slightly beyond the adjacent marginal portions of the book cover side. At this time, the intermediate portion 20 is folded inwardly upon itself along a straight line over the outer portion of the book cover side The forming or arrangement of theseand the coated extremities 21 are moistened and the same then pressed into permanent engagement with adjacent portions of the inwardly.folded top and bottom end portions. Thus, a complete bool: cover protector is afforded.

From the foregoing, it will be understood that I have provided a simple, but highly efficient form of book cover protector, the construction or formation of the same being such as to provide a one piece re-enforced adj ustable book cover protector which may be made of various or different grades of paper or other suitable flexible material; (116 size of which protector may be properly and quickly fitted to books of different or varying dimensions, since no cutting is required, and folding of the cover protector is rendered simple and accurate by means of guide lines or markings hereinbefore described.

The corners of this book cover protector are so designed that the folding in thereof, according to directions, gives double thick ness and extra protection for several inches at each corner of a book so covered and protected without sacrificing, in the least, strength or durability of the cover; the surface or exposed face of the cover protector being perfectly smooth and hence, providing an important and advantageous feature in this respect, since an uneven surface has been found extremely objectionable due to the liability of the engagement of various objects therein with the tearing or premature wearing of the protector.

The tongues 2, 3, 4:, 5, 10, 10', 11, 11', 3 and 5 occurring at the top and bottom of the various sheets and in the centers thereof provide re-enforcement and if properly folded, protect the book at those points most needed. Certain of these tongues are curved in a way to lend materially to the strength and durability of the same and in this connection, it should be mentioned that if desired, the tongues may be formed in their respective sheets of the protector by being cut for certain distances and then perforated or scored for short distances inwardly, thus permitting their severance from the body portions of their respective sheets only as necessary or as is required.

Manifestly, the various constructions shown are capable of considerable modification, and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.

I claim 2- 1. A book cover protector comprising a sheet of material having diagonally disposed tongues formed in the corner portions there of and adjacent the opposite ends of the same, the extremities of those free portions of the opposite sides between said tongues being adhesively coated upon certain of their faces, and opposed transversely extending tongues arranged adjacent the center portions of the top and bottom of the sheet.

2. A book cover protector comprising a sheet of material having diagonally disposed tongues having outwardly diverging edges formed in the various corner portions thereof, the top and bottom portions of said sheet being cut away adjacent the central portions thereof, a strip joined to one face of said sheet along its center disposed transversely of the same and having its opposite extremities overlying said cut away central portions of the top and bottom portions of the sheet, the extremities of those free portions of the opposite sides of the sheet between the diagonal converging tongues being adhesively coated upon certain of their faces, and transversely arranged relatively .spaced parallel guide markings inscribed upon portions of each of said diagonal tongues and those por tions of the strip overlying said cut away top and bottom central portions.

3. A book cover protector comprising a sheet of material having diagonal tongues formed in the same adjacent its various corners, each of said tongues being provided with relatively spaced transversely extending parallel guide markings, the extremities of those free portions of the opposite sides of the sheet between the diagonal tongues being adhesively coated upon certain of their faces, one side of said sheet being folded and having the bottom portion thereof permanently joined by the adjacent adhesively coated extremity and the upper portion of such folded sheet being open, and opposed transversely extending tongues arranged adjacent the center portion of the top and bottom of said sheet, portions of said transversely extending tongues being provided with relatively spaced transversely extending parallel guide markings, as and for the purpose set forth.
