INDEX-TAB.
or goes.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentrgd Nov. 15, 19M).
Application filed. June 7, 1910. Serial No. 565,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that l, WALTER E. Hanson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrod, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful linprovenients in Index-Tabs, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to index tabs for indexing books, etc, the object of the invention being to provide a simple construction of tab which can be applied without liability of soiling the fingers or of the latter sticking to the gummed surface of the tab.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, in which llignre 3. is a plan view of a leaf or sheet,
showing one of my improved tabs applied thereto as it appears prior to the removal of the finger grip portion. Fig. 2 is a long tudinal section through the tab applied as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the tab is formed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates my improved tab, which coniprises a body or tab portion proper 2 and a finger grip portion 3, the tab being made of paper or other suitable material and of oblong rectangular form, as shown.
The tab is made from the shape of blank shown in Fig. 3, and is formed therefrom by-folding the blank on the longitudinal central dotted lined, the portions 2 and 3 being separated by a transverse crease, line ol'inilentation, row of perforations or other similar weakened portion 5, whereby the finger grip portion 3 may be readily and conveniently detached from the tab portion proper 2.
The inner face of the portion 2 up to the line 5 is gummed, as indicated at 6, and said portion is provided with a longitudinal slit 7 extending from its lower edge approxii'nately twolhirds of the distance between the same and the line 5, thus bifurcating the body for a portion of its length.
In forming and applying the tab, the blank is folded longitudinally along the corn tral line 4-. so that the portions of the tab.
will be formed ofparallel leaves, the leaves of the portion 2 being partially se aratcd along the foldcdedge by the slit The guninied face (5 of the portion 2 then being moistened, the leaves of said portion are arranged to straddle the edge of the leaf or sheet 8 to which the tab is to be applied,
such application being permitted through the provision of the slit 7, as will be readily understood. Upon then compressing the leaves of the portions 2 said leaves will be secured by their gurnlned faces to each other and to the respective adjacent faces of the leaf 8. When the tab is so applied to the leaf 8, the unslitted upper portion of the tab body, one face of which bears the desired indicating number, letter or mark, will project beyond the edge of the leaf 8 for display. The portion 3 is then torn away or severed. from the body of the tab along the weakened line 5.
In the various manipulations above described, the tab is handled mainly by the finger grip portion 3, from which it will be apparent that the tab may formed and applied without the fingers of the hand coming in contact with the gun'nned surfaces andthus sticking to the tab and soiling the tab or lingers, the advantages of which will be obvious.
l-laving thus described my l1lVGIltl0I1, I claim 1. An index tab formed from a folded sheet of material to provide a tab portion and a finger grip portion, the inner faces of the folds of the tab portion being gummed and partially separated by a longitudinal slit, the said tab and finger grip portions being separated by a transverse weakened line.
An index tab formed from a folded sheet of material to provide a tab portion and a finger grip portion, the inner faces of the folds of the tab portion being gurnnied, and said tab portion being separated from the finger grip portion by a transverse weakening line above the guniincd faces, said tab portion having its leaves partially separated along the line of fold by a slit extending from its lower edge upwardly to a point below said weakening line.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'AL ER E. HARBOR. lVitnesses L. Jonnsron, E. N. LowMAN.
