1 Claim. (Cl. 40-125) This invention is directed to a newy and improved display device for advertising matter and the like.

One purpose of the present invention is the creation of a disposable display which advantageously utilizes a grocery cart for a support Another purpose of the present invention is to utilize a grocery basketcart for advertising without interfering with the normaloperation of the cart.

Another purpose vof the present invention is the creation of a' disposable displayl for use with grocery carts of `the nesting type and which is easily attached to' a cart.

Another purpose of the present invention is the provision of an improved system for attaching a display to a woven wire basket structure.

Otherv purposes will appear from time to time. inV the course of the ensuing specification and claim.

Referring generally now to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the use of the invention;

Figure 2 is `an enlarged detailed view of a portion of the assembly shown in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the display constituting the present invention;

Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of attaching the display to a woven wire basket; and

Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank utilized in the invention.

Like elements are designated by like characters throughout the specification and drawings.

Referring specifically now to the drawings and in the first instance to Figure 1, 1 generally designates a grocery cart basket of the nesting type. It is supported on wheels fd tetes Patent rectangular in outline, has a central fold line or crease 11 dividing the blank into an upper display section 12 and a lower display section 13. The upper section has a fold line or crease 14 extending generally parallel to the fold line 12. The fold line 14 serves to divide the section 12 into a printed matter surface and an attaching surface whichY is represented by the outer end portion 15' of the section 12.

The lower section has a fold line or crease 16 which extends generallyparallel to the first named fold line. The fold line 16 divides the lower section 13 into a lower display surface and an attaching portion 17 which is represented by the outer end portion of section 13.

The fold line 14 is spaced from the central fold line y11 by a distance greater than the distance of the fold line 11` from the fold line 16. This difference in spacing is on the order of the thickness of the rear wall of the basket gate for a purpose which will appear more fully in en'- suing portions of the specification.

" One of the outer end portions of sections 12 and 13v is provided with a plurality of flexible portions. As will be seen in Figure 5, the outer end 17 is provided with a plurality of spaced cuts 13 which extend from the outer edge 19 of this portion inwardly toward the fold line 16. These cuts create a plurality of flexible areas or portions 2li.A which are the areav or tabs between the cut lines.

1' These tabs or portions may be easily exed with respect 2 and 3. A rearwardly extending handle 4 enables the user of the cart to propel and manipulate the same.

In this general class of cart, the basket 5 is customarily formed from Woven wire having vertical stays and horizontal stays. The rear wall 6 of the basket is hinged to the upper portion of the basket as by any suitable hinge pin 7 or the like. The rear wall or gate 6 is mounted for swinging movement between a generally vertical position (illustrated in full lines in Figure l) and a generally horizontal position (illustrated in dotted lines at 6a in Figure l).

Baskets of this type may have a gradually diminishing cross-section from the rearward portion thereof to the front thereof so that a series of carts may be nested together. In nesting the carts, the forward wall 8 of the basket is moved against the rear wall 6 of a cart immediately ahead of the basket, thus contacting the rear wall of the forward basket and moving it to the generally horizontal position while at the same time the forward portion of the rear basket enters the basket space of the forward basket or cart.

According to the invention, the rear wall 6 of the basket is utilized as a support for advertising display'generally designated as 9. The display blank may be advantageously formed from an inexpensive fibrous structure, such as cardboard. The blank 10, which is generally to the remainder of the section 13 and with respect to one another. The cuts 18 should be such that the areas of the individual tabs 20 extend from the lower edge ofportion 17 to a level above a securing means represented by staples 21.

In use the blank 10 may carry printed or advertising matter on both the upper surface 12 and lower surface 13. As shown in the drawings, the upper section or surface 12 carries such printed matter.

In attaching the display to the card, the blank is folded along the line 11 so as to dispose the lower section 13 beneath the upper section 12 as appears in Fig. 3. These two sections are secured to one another intermediate therein as by any suitable adhesive or tbe like, which is represented generally at A. The

15 and 17 are then bent downwardly with respect to the remainder of the sections and disposed in generally parallel relation as is seen in Figure 3. The outer end portions are then spaced apart on the order of the thickness of the rear gate wall 6 of the basket. The display is inserted over the rear wall and the

outer end portions

15 and 17 embrace the rear wall as appears in Figures 2 and 4. The desired angle of inclination of the display surface 12 may be varied slightly by moving the

outer end portions

15 and 17 vertically with respect to one another. It Should be noted that the general disposition of the blank puts the display surface 12 in a plane which extends generally transversely to the line of sight S of the user for advantageous reading of the material on the display. At the same time the general disposition of the blank is such that when the gate wall 6 is swung to the generally horizontal position, the display surface is moved to the dotted line position shown in Figure l, where it does not interfere with the basket or cart which is nested within the basket 5. Thus the lower section 13 may also carry printed matter, if desired, for displaying advertising matter when the carts are in a stored or nested position.

When the user has adjusted the display to obtain the precise angle of inclination desired, some of the tab portions 20 between the vertical stays of the basket are flexed toward the outer end portion 15 and are then secured to the outer end portion 15 as by the use of any suitable staples or the like 21. 15 and 17 with the portions of the stay wires between these outer ends of the blank. Vertical displace'- rnent of the display with respect to the rear wall is also prevented by such engagement.

Since the display is formed from cardboard or the like' it may be detached from the cart and thrown away after use and a new printedV advertising display may be inserted on the cart. When detaching the display, the individual tab sections may be torn from the remainder of the' display for ease in removal. The display is nonetheles'sheld securely in position on the cart during use thereof, without interfering with the normal operation of the cart.

Whereasrwe have shown and described an operative 'form of our invention, we wish it to be understood that this showing is to be taken in an illustrative andl diagrammatic sense only. There are many modifications of thev invention which will fall within the spirit of the invention and which will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The scope of the invention, therefore, should be limited only by the scope of the hereinafter appended claim.

WeV claim:

A- nesting type basket and display therefor, including a nestingl type basket having an open top and a hinged rear wall movable between generally vertical and generally horizontal positions, a display formed from a disposablecardboard blank, said display being folded intermediate the ends thereof to provide an upper display section for advertising matter and a lower section underlying and insurface contact with said display section, the outer portions ofeach section being folded and inclined to the remainder of said sections, the outer portions of said sections being spaced apart byi'a distance on the order of the thickness of the rear wall of said basket, said outer portions depending from the remainder of said blank and embracing said rear wall on opposite sides thereof, said display section and lower section being inclined to the general plane of said rear wall to extend generally transversely to a line of sight from above and to the rear of said rear wall when said rear wall is in a generally vertical position, said surface being upwardly inclined from said rear wall when said rear wall is in a generally horizontal position, one of said outer portions including means dening a plurality of sections, securing means extending through said rear wall and engaging the sections of said one portion and said other portion so as to hold both portions in embracing contact with said rear wall, said sections having areas extending from the lower edge of said one portion to a level above said securing means, said sections being capable of individual ilexure to enable tearing of said sections and thereby enable easy removal of said display from said rear wall.
