is, i940, serial N11-.smsen 2 claims. e (ci. ,2n-ea)l ApplicationDeeember This invention relates to display devices of the cardboard self-supporting foldable type commonly used for displaying articles of merchandise 4to promote` the salesthereof, and the general nor do they have any function for connectingv the parts or portionsof the device together or for holding it in displayed position, and the particular construction of my device allows it to vbe folded incompact form, so as to take up mini-- mum space in storage.
A further object is tn provide a display device that is self-supporting, in a manner to pre-x vent it from toppling over and from collapsing` or casual folding.
Another object is to provide a display 'device that has ample spaceon the front face thereof for indicia such as advertising matter, vso that the indicia will not be unduly obstructed by the displayed articles, and the device is simple in. construction, inexpensive to manufacture andextremely eflicient in use and service.
. This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the `combination and arrangement of tlie several parts, to behere#v out therefrom to nt articles of any kind and shape. I
Figure 5 is a view of a fragmentary portion of the blank from which the form of Figure 4 is made. Y i A Figure 6 is a. front perspective view of a further modified form' for displaying writing implements and the like.
VFigure 7 is a rearperspective view ofthe form of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is an yedgeelevation ofthe form of Figures 6 and '7 in folded position.,
Figure 9 is a View of the blank from which the formV of Figures 6 to 8 is made.
Referring to the drawing'rin detail, it will be noted that each of the forms of my device is made from a single blank of any suitable sheetmaterial, such as cardboard or the like.
The blank of the form of Figuresr 1 and 2 as shown in Figure 3 is of elongated rectangular shape and is provided with three transversely disposed parallel score or fold lines I, 2 and 3, the line I` being arranged along the transverse center of the blank, the line 2 in close proximity to the line I`, and the line 3 is arranged a greater Vdistance from the line 2 than the latter is from the line I, so that Vwhen the blank is bent along the lines I and 3 'when forming the device, there is provided arelatively large frontor body porinafter fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawing' and specifically pointed out in the appendedclaims," i
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, land in which:
Figure l isa front perspective view of one form of my device forl displayingwriting implements such as pencils and likeshaped articles.
`Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof in folded position. Y
Figure 3 is a view of the blank from which the form of Figures. 1 and 2 is made.
Figure 4 is an edge elevation of a modified forni which allows vadjustment of the front or body portion thereof Vto several inclined positions, and the front portion of this form is free from article fastening or supporting cut out members or the like, so that the front portion can be used for advertising purposes only, or portions can be tion 4, a narrow base portion 5 and a relatively small brace portion t. The base portion is bent upwardly along the score line 2 to'provide converging Vsections 'I and 8, and the rearY section is of greater width than that of the front section,
so that the front or'body portion ,canv be sup-V ported ata rearward inclination slightly beyond a vertical plane.
The blank is further provided with a score or fold line 9 extending transversely thereof adjacent to the` free end of the brace portion 6 to provideV a hinge strip I0 that is adhesively or otherwise fixed to the rear face of the front portion 4 substantially along the transverse center thereof', so that when the device is set up in, displayed position, the front and brace portions are disposed in converging relation, with the front portion inclined rearwardly and supported accordingly by the brace and base portionsas clearly shown in Figure 1.
Struck from the front portion 4 is a relatively narrow flap I I that extends transversely and forwardly therefrom for disposal horizontally when the device is in displayed position, and the flap has a row of openings I2 therein for receivingl writing implements such as pencils A, or any other like shaped articles. 'Ihe front portion 4 also has struck therefrom substantially triangular shaped ears I3 arranged in pairs and forwardly directed from the portion 4 to provide substantially V-shaped pockets aligned with the openings I2 to receive the lower ends of the writing implements, as clearly shown in Figure 1. By that construction, it will be obvious that the Writing implements can be easily and expeditiously applied and removed with respect to the display device without possibility of damaging the latter and when the device is in either folded or displayed position, and it will be further obvious that the device is foldable merely by moving the front and brace portions together and to displayed position by separating said portions.
The front portion 4 may have any suitable indicia thereon such as advertising matter, as shown, r descriptive matter relative to the pencils, and due to the arrangement of the pencil fastening and supporting meanswith respect to the portion 4, the indicia is not unduly obstruct,
ed, as will be noted upon inspection of Figure 1.
The form of Figure 4 also includes a front portion I 4, a base portion I5 and a brace portion I6, with a hinge strip I1 formed on the brace portion I6, which like the hinge strip I9 is adhesively or otherwise secured to the rear face of the front portion I4. The base portion I5 also consists of converging sections I8 and I9 upwardly foldable in the same manner as the sections I and 8 and the portions I4, I5 and I6 as well as the sections I8 and I9 are provided by score or fold lines on the blank of Figure 5 which has additional transversely disposed score or fold lines 20 and 2| arrangedon the front portion I4, so that the latter is adjustable to three inclined positions, two of which are shown in Figure 4.
The front portion I4 is shown as being free from article supporting or fastening means, so that the form of Figure 4 can be used for advertising purposes only, or in other words will act in the capacity of a sign, but the front portion I4 can be plain and cut out to provide fastening or supporting means to fit articles of any kind, that is the form of Figure 4 can be sold without any indicia on the front portion I4 and the purchaser can provide the cut out portions and apply any indicia desired.
The blank of theb form of Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 has score or fold lines 22, 23 and 24, as shown in Figure 9 to provide a front or body portion 25, a base portion 26 and a brace portion 21, the base portion 26 being identical to that of the form of Figures 1 and 2, but the front portion 25 is slit transversely as at 28 for th'e passage of a nap therethrough, that is formed on the brace portion 2'I between hinge strips or tongues 30, the strips 30 being adhesively or otherwise secured to the rear face of the front portion 25, as best shown in Figure 7, after the flap 29 is inserted through the slit 28. 'Ihe flap 29 is arranged horizontally and has a row of openings 3I therein for receiving writing implements such as pencils or like shaped articles, the openings being made relatively small so that the edges thereof will set up a frictional engagement with th'e articles to hold the latter against removal or displacement with respect to the flap 29.
vIt is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and inthe combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
