11 Claims. (Cl. 248174) My present invention is concerned with display devices, more especially with such devices made of cardboard or like material and serving chiefly for counter display of small articles of merchandise.

While the invention is shown, and has high utility in the display of fountain'pens, pencils, and the like, it is useful for, though not limited to, the display of numerous other slender articles such as files, drills, thermometers, vials, lipsticks, toothbrushes, and other articles of kindred type.

An object of the invention is to provide a dis play device made of simple, inexpensive cardboard blanks which may be shipped in flat, knocked-down condition and can readily be set up, without the exercise of skill, or the use of tools, staples, rivets, pins or adhesive to make up a secure display stand of extraordinarily attractive and-substantial appearance.

Another object is to provide a device of the above type to which a multiplicity of the articles to be displayed may be readily applied in conspicuously exposed relation and from which these articles may readily be removed as required,

but not so readily as to facilitate shop-lifting.

Another object is to provide a display device of the above type which inherently affords facility for accommodating a stock of undisplayed arti cles, by which the device incidentally becomes weighted against tipping over.

V Referring now to the drawing, the display Wall comprises a blank including a main or front panel Ill and, in the specific embodiment shown, a pair of lateral or wing panels i i and i2 extending symmetrically at obtuse angles therefrom, and joined thereto by vertical fold lines H and I2.

Each of the wing panels as shown has a flap l3 extending from the lower fold edge i l thereof and preferably of the width of the panel, the

outer extremity of the extension flap 13 being somewhat reduced in width at !5 to afford a ledge protruding outward through a corresponding horizontal slot it in the panel, the flap I3 being folded under in back of and against said panel and ledge l5 being folded outward on fold line I5 as best shown in Fig. 4.

While it is within the scope of the invention to thus construct each of two, three or more panels of a unitary display wall and to cause said wall to be self-sustaining in upright position by the relative angular relation of the several vertical panels, it is preferred to correlate and interlock a display wall comprising a main and ,two

The stand comprises preferably a base 20 and an upstanding back wall 2| connected to the base by a horizontal fold line 22.

In a preferred embodiment the main panel H] has an extension flap 23 folded at line 2 1 rearward at right angles thereto for a tongue and slot interlock with the base 28 of the stand. For this purpose, as shown, the base of the stand may be provided with a central rearwardly extending ing ears 3! interlocked in back of reduced portions 32 of corresponding open slots 33 in the back wall.

Thus the main panel It extends parallel to the back wall, the wing panels H and I2 extend at obtuse angles to the main panel, and engage the back wall at the side edges, and all these panels rest directly upon and rise from the base as.

Preferably the back and the main panel are further interlocked by a transverse brace 35 comprising a tongue slit from the middle part of the back wall 2i, bent forward horizontally about fold line 3%, and having its extremity slightly reduced with respect to brace tongue 35, to afford shoulders 3'! against which the rear face of the main panel it abuts, said tongue protruding as a ledge through a corresponding slot in said main 1 panel.

The protruding ledges 39, I5 and I5 respectively on the main panel and the two wing panels are preferably at a common level, somewhat above the middles of the respective panels, and the respective articles to be displayed are preferably held in place in holes fill in said ledges, as shown in Fig. 1. In the case of fountain pens, as shown, the rim of the cap 42 would ordinarily rest upon the shelf, with the body 33 of the pen extending therebelow. The pens or other articles serve in effect as cotter pins to maintain the support ledges in their protruding relation, without possibility of said ledges slipping back through their respective slots under the resiliency of the folded blanks. Each article is thus held snugly against the forward face of the corresponding display panel.

In the display device, as shown in Fig. l and as above described, since the lower edges of the main and wing display panels contact the base, and the outer lateral edges of the wing panels contact the back, there is afforded therebetween a trapezoidal receptacle in which a stock of the pens, or other articles, could conveniently be stored. Such undisplayed extra stock serves incidently to weight the display device and to prevent it from tipping over.

The brace 35 acts, moreover, as a guard to discourage shop lifting from such extra supply. The displayed pens are so held on the device that both hands are required to permit removal, which affords a safeguard against shop lifting of the displayed articles.

The display device comprises nothing more than two cardboard blanks with appropriate creases and tongues and flaps. It is readily set up without any separate fastener contrivances; and it affords a stable support of substantial and ornamental appearance.

It will thus be seen that there is herein described a display device in which the several features of this invention are embodied, and which in service attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of practical use.

As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. A display device comprising an upstanding panel having an extension flap at one of the edges thereof folded inward and behind said panel, the extremity of said flap extending outward through a corresponding slot in said panel, the articles to be displayed being held on said exposed extremity of the flap in front of the panel and blocking the return of said extremity through its slot.

2. A display device comprising an upstanding wall presenting a plurality of angularly disposed panels, one of said panels having an extension from the lower edge thereof folded inward and behind the rear wall thereof and including a ledge at its outer extremity of somewhat lesser width than said panel and extending outward through a corresponding slot in said panel, said ledge affording mounting means for display of the articles in front of the panel.

3. A display panel including a blank, having one or more fold lines to afford angularly disposed panels adapted to be self-sustaining, certain of said panels having each a unitary extension along one horizontal edge thereof, each of said extensions folded in back of the panel, the extremity of said extension being somewhat reduced in width and extending outward through a corresponding slot in the panel, to afford ledges in a common plane on the several panels, said ledges being perforated to accommodate the articles and retained by said articles against reentry through their respective slots.

4. A display frame comprising an upstanding wall having a main panel and two wing panels extending angularly relatively thereto, said wing panels having unitary flaps at their lower ends folded rearward thereof and provided with extremities extending outward through corresponding slots in said panels, said extremities comprising ledges and having conformations for supporting the articles to be displayed in front of said panels, and means retaining said panels in substantially fixed relative angular relation.

5. A display frame comprising an upstanding wall having a main panel and a pair of wing panels extending angularly relatively thereto, said wing panels having unitary flaps at their lower ends folded rearward thereof and provided with extremities extending outward through corresponding slots in said panels and serving as ledges, and means retaining said panels in substantially fixed relative angular relation, said means including a backboard having a transverse tongue extending forward and protruding outward. through a corresponding slot in the main panel to afford a ledge similar to those on the wing panels, said ledges serving for retaining in place articles to be displayed in front of the several panels.

6. A display device comprising a stand presenting a back wall, a display wall presenting a plurality of panels angularly disposed with respect to each other, supported upon their lower edges and attached at their lateral extremities into engagement with said back wall, each of said panels having an outwardly projecting shelf for supporting in front of the several panels the articles to be displayed.

7. A display device comprising a stand having a base and a vertical back wall, a display wall having a plurality of vertical rectangular panels disposed angularly to each other with their lower edges resting upon said base and the lateral extremities thereof interlocked with said back wall, certain of said panels each having integral therewith a: shelf protruding through a corresponding horizontal slot in the panel, said shelf having perforations for accommodating the articles to be displayed in front of the respective panels.

8. A display device comprising a stand having a base and a back wall, a display wall having a plurality of panels angularly disposed with respect to each other and supported upon and interlocked with said base, the outer lateral edges of said panels contacting and interlocked with said back wall, each of said panels having an outstanding shelf with perforations for accommodating the articles to be displayed in front of the several panels.

9. A display device composed of a pair of interlocked blanks and including a stand blank, com prising a base and an upstanding back wall and a display wall blank, the latter including a vertical main panel and vertical lateral panels, said panels resting at their lower edges upon said base,

means interlocking the main panel with respect to said stand blank, means interlocking the lateral extremities of said display wall blank to said back panel and in contact therewith, and shelves protruding horizontally outward from the respective panels and constituting parts unitary with the blanks.

10. A display device comprising a pair of blanks including a stand having a base and an upstanding back wall and a display wall blank rising from said base and having an extension flap at right angles thereto resting on. said base and interlocked therewith, and a brace flap cut out of the back blank and extending forward therefrom with a reduced extremity comprising a ledge protruding through a corresponding horizontal slot in the middle portion of said display Wall, said display wall including a pair of wing panels and provided with lateral tongues extending through corresponding slots in said back panel and interlocked therewith, said wing panels having flaps integral therewith folded in back thereof, and having reduced extremities comprising ledges extending outward through corresponding horizontal slots in said wing panels,

each of said ledges having means for supporting articles to be displayed.

11. A display device comprising a pair of interlocked cardboard blanks including a stand blank comprising a base and a back wall rising therefrom and a display wall blank comprising upstanding panels including a main panel and a pair of wing panels, the wing panels having flaps extending from the lower edges thereof folded upward and back of said respective panels and having reduced extremities comprising ledges extending outward through corresponding horizontal slots in said panels, the main panel having an extension flap and the base of said stand panel having a tongue and slot connection with respect thereto, the back wall having a brace tongue out out therefrom folded forward and protruding at its extremity through a corresponding slot in said front panel to constitute a ledge, the extreme lateral edges of said Wing panels having extension tongues interlocking with corresponding slots in the back wall, the ledges protruding through the several panels being perforated for mounting articles to be displayed.
