DISPLAY STAND Filed Oct. 5. 1943 HIS-4.
INVENTOR HERBERT/4. S/Ma/V.
Patented Mar. 14, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,344,273 DISPLAY STAND Herbert A. Simon, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application October 5, 1943, Serial No. 505,011
3 Claims. (Cl. 211 72) This invention relates to improvements in display devices and more particularly to a folding cardboard display stand.
One of the important features of the invention is to provide a display device embodying a main display panel having a folding tray structure connected thereto which enables the flat folding of the device for compact packing and shipping, and which tray structure may be unfolded and interlocked with the display panel to hold the tray structure in set up position forward of the display panel.
Another feature of the invention resides in a folding display device in which a multi-compartment tray extends forward of a main display panel when the device is set up for use, the height of the tray being considerably less than the height of the display panel to expose advertising matter adapted to be arranged on the front thereof.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a standing display device embodying a multi-compartment tray in which articles of merchandise may be segregated in an orderly manner for display and sales purposes.
Other novel features of construction will appear as the following specification is read in con junction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the folding display device in set up position for use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the display devices in flat collapsed position.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral designates a folding display stand in its entirety and which is constructed in accordance with the invention now to be specifically described.
The display device I0 includes a single blank of cardboard A which is substantially rectangular in shape. The blank A is hinge scored at ll inwardly from its lower end and transversely thereof to divide the blank into a main display panel l2 and a folding bottom wall I3. Carried by the free forward edge of the bottom wall [3 is a front and end wall forming section formed from a single elongated blank of cardboard B. The front wall is designated 14 to which the end walls l-|5 are integrally connected along parallel hinge scores IBI6. Integral with the bottom of the front wall I 4 and extending the length thereof is an attaching glue flap H, the same being connected to the front wall along a hinge score Hi. The glue flap I1 is adhesively secured to the bottom wall l3 adjacent its free front edge. The front wall i 4 and end walls |5|5 are relatively narrow compared to the height of the display panel 12 so that the .tray formed by these walls is considerably shallow compared to the height of the panel [2 to expose the front of the panel on which advertising matter is adaptedto be printed. Also, the length of the front wall I4 is less than the width of the panel 12 to facilitate the interlocking of the end walls I 5l5 with the panel l2 in a manner presently to be explained. Extending from, and integral with the free side edges of the end walls midway thereof, are locking tongues |9-l9, the corners of which are rounded. The panel I2 is provided with slots 28-43 which are substantially in alinement with the hinge scores l6-l6 to respectively interfittingly receive the tongues |9l9 when the tray forming walls are folded into set up position.
Carried by the inner side of the front wall It is an elongated partition forming strip of cardboard C, the same being transversely hinge scored on the spaced parallel lines 2l'2| to divide the same into an attaching panel 22 and partition wall flaps 23-23. Integral with the free side edge of each partition wall flap 23 midway of the height thereof is a locking tongue 24, the corners of which are rounded. The attaching panel 22 is adhesively secured to the inner side of the front wall l4 centrally thereof. In substantial alinement with the hinge scores 2 l-2l are slots 25-25 in the display panel l2, which with the slots 20-20 form a transverse row of slots across the panel 12. The attaching panel 22 is of a height equal to or less than that of the front wall [4. The partition flaps 2323 are of a shape and height corresponding to that of the end walls l5l5.
In practice, assume that the display stand I0 is in flat unfolded position as shown in Figure 4. To set up the display device, the operator manually swings the display panel l2 on the hinge score H to a vertical position at right angle to the bottom wall I3. The partition flaps 2323 are now swung on the hinge scores 2 l2l to a position at right angles to the front wall l4, and likewise, the end Walls i5-l5 are swung on the hinge scores Iii-l6 to substantially parallel the partition wall flaps. Next, the front wall I4 is swung upward on the hinge score l8 and just prior to the limit of this swinging movement, the tongues l9-|9, 24-24 are inserted into the respective slots 2ll20 and 2525. The slots are of sufficient length to receive the tongues during this swinging movement but are of a width to enable a tight friction fit between the side walls of the slots and the opposed flat sides of the respective tongues, whereby to securely hold the folded parts in their folded position. With the walls and partitions thus folded a multi-compartment tray is provided forward of the main display panel [2. Three separate compartments D are formed, but more or less may be provided, depending upon the number of partition walls 23. Merchandise to be displayed and sold may be orderly placed in the compartments D.
To aid in rigidly supporting the display device in an upstanding set up position, a conventional folding cardboard easel 26 is centrally attached to the rear of the main display panel [2.
Whereas the display device I0 is shown in flat collapsed position in Figure 4, the length of the same may be shortened by folding the bottomwall I3 over the display panel l2, whereupon the front wall end walls l5, and partition walls 23, all overlie the panel l2.
While I have shown and describedwhat I consider to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be-understood that such changes in design and construction as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A folding cardboard display stand comprising a display panel, abottom wall integral with the bottom of the display panel and hingedly connected thereto along a hinge score, a front wall hingedly connected to the front of the bottom' wall, end walls integral with the ends of the front wall and connected thereto along hinge scores, and locking tongues integral with the free side edges of the end walls and extending therefrom, said display panel having slots therein for interfittingly receiving the respective tongues, said bottom, front, end walls, and panel cooperating to provide a forwardly extending tray relative to said display panel.
2. A folding cardboard display stand as set forth in claim 1 in which the height of the front and end walls is considerably less than that of the display panel to expose a substantial portion of the same to view.
3. A folding cardboard display stand comprising a display panel, a bottom wall integral with the bottom of the display panel and hingedly connected thereto along a hinge score, a front wall hingedly connected to the front of the bottom wall, end walls integral with the ends of the front Wall and connected thereto along hinge scores, and locking tongues integral with the free side edges of the end walls and extending therefrom, said display panel having slots therein for interfittingly receiving the respective tongues, said bottom, front, end walls, and panel cooperating to provide a forwardly extending tray relative to said display panel, spaced transverse partition walls hinged to the inner side of the front wall, locking tongues integral with the free sides of the partition walls, said display panel having complementary slots for respectively receiving the tongues of the partition walls, said bottom wall, front wall, end walls, and partition walls being of considerably less height than the display panel to expose a substantial portion of the front of the display panel to view.
