Description

H. MARSH DI SPLAY STAND Feb. 18, 1930.
File d Sept. 19, 192':
ATTOR N EY Patented Feb. 18, 1930 PATENT OFFICE HENRY MARSH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DISPLAY STAND Application filed September 19, 1927. Serial No. 220,603.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in display stands and more particularly to a cakedisplay stand and has for its principal object the provision of an im- ;proved construction of this character which will be highly. eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
One of the several objects of the invention is to provide a cake stand which will resemble 19 a plurality of cake boxes arranged to provide a support of. step formation for supporting real or actual cake boxes with cakes or other bakery goods therein.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,
7 showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention shoiwing certain parts in distended position;
3 is a plan view of the blank from which the invention, as shown in Fig. 1, is formed.
Referring to the drawing, wherein a preferred form of construction for my invention is illustrated, 10 indicates the main portion of the blank from which my device is formed. This blank is made from foldable material such as cardboard or the like. In Fig. 3 I have depicted this blank in unfolded flattened position and by referring to this figure it may be seen that the portion 10 is of elongated rectangular formation and is defined by parallel extending fold lines 15 and the fold lines 11 and 23 that extend between the ends of the fold lines 15. The blanklalso includes a plurality of tabs, described hereinafter, that are arranged outwardly of the fold lines 15, 11, and 23.
At one end of the portion 10, outwardly of the fold line 11, is a tab 12 that has fold lines extending thereacross, which fold lines are ali ed with the fold lines 15. outwardly of the fold lines extending across the tab 12,
and aligned with the tab 12, are tabs 13 that are notched as indicated at 14.
Inwardly of the fold line 11 and outwardly of the fold lines 15 are the side wall tabs 16 which extend from the fold line 11 for a predetermineddistance along the fold lines 15 or the sides of the portion 10. The outer edges 18 of the tabs 16 are cut into step like formation for a purpose to be set forth presently. Inwardly of the side wall tabs 16 are the intermediate tabs 19, which likewise have their outer edges cut into step like formation, although one less cut is made in these outer edges than in the outer edges 18. Slits are provided in the tabs 19 at certain points, the location and utility of which will be presently set forth.
Outwardly of the fold line 23 is a tab 25, this tab being located opposite to the tab 12. The side edges of the tab 25 are aligned with the fold lines 15.
The adjacent portions of the tabs 13 and 16 are separated by slits aligned with the fold line 11. Adjacent portions of the tabs 16 and 19 are separated by slits aligned with the fold line 17 that extends across the portion 10 parallel to the fold line 11. A fold line 20 extends across the portion 10 parallel to the fold line 18 and in alignment with the ininwardly disposed edges of the tabs 19.
Disposed outwardly of the fold lines 15 intermediate the fold lines 20 and 23 are a plurality of relatively small tabs or tongues which are of variable width for purposes to be set forth presently. Arranged adjacent the fold line 23 and extendin inwardly of the portion 10 along the fold ines 15 for a predetermined distance are the relatively wide tongues 26. Extending across the portion 10 in alignment with the inwardly disposed ends of the tongues 26 is a fold line 30. Inwardly of the tongues 26 are notched tabs 27 which are of restricted width with respect to the tongues 26 and which extend along the fold lines 15 for a predetermined distance. A fold line 30 extends across the portion 10 in alignment with the inwardly disposed ends of the tabs 27. Extending across the portion 10 in spaced relation with the fold line 31 is a fold line 28 which is parallel to the fold line 31. Arranged outwardly of the fold lines 15 intermediate the fold lines 31 and 28 are the fold lines 15 and disposed outwardly thereof are a plurality of tabs which are employed in retaining the blank when it is folded to form an article such as that depicted in Fig. 1. .The fold lines 11, 17 20, 32, 38, 31, 30 and 23 are all parallel to each other and extend between the fold lines 15.
I In folding the blank to form an article similar to that depicted in Fig. 1 the blank will be arranged so that the area between the fold lines 11, 15, 17 and 15 will provide the bottom. The area of the portion 10 between the fold lines 17, 15, 20 and 15 provides the back of the device. The blank is therefore folded along the fold lines 17 and 20 so that the area enclosed by the fold lines 17, 15, 20 and 15 will extend at right angles to the area enclosed by the fold lines 17 15, 11 and 15.
The side wall flaps 16 are then arranged to be at right angles to the bottom portion by being folded upwardly. The front flap 12 is also folded upwardly at right angles to this bottom portion. The blank is then folded along the fold line 2Q so that the portion extending beyond the fold line 20 will extend at right angles to the rear wall portion and parallel to the lower wall portion. It is manifest that, after the rear wall portion is bent into the rightangular position described and after the side wall tabs have been positioned as described, the intermediate tabs may be folded to be disposed outwardly of the side wall tabs 16. After the device has been 'folded as set forth the blank is then folded along the lines 32 and 28 and in this manner the most upwardly of the step like formation depicted in Fig. 1 is defined. The tongues 33 are bent downwardly and are inserted over the upper edge of the upwardmost of the step like formation cut in the outer edges of the side wall flaps 16. It is manifest that the area enclosed by the fold lines 32,15, 28
and 15 will be extended parallel to the rear wall. Therefore the tabs 34 at theends thereof may be folded toward the rear wall to extend over the outwardly disposed surface of the intermediate tabs 19. As best illustrated in Fig. 2 slots 35 are provided in the intermediate tabs 19 at such a point that the I notched tabs 34 maybe disposed therein with v the notches engaging the slots and in this manner'the portions just set forth as being folded are retained in position. The blank is then folded so that the area enclosed by the fold lines 28, 15, 31 and 15 will extend at right angles to the rear wall and parallel to the lower wall and the area enclosed by the fold lines 31, 15, 30 and 15 is arranged to extend parallel to the rear wall 10 toward the lower wall. The tongues 29 are folded downwardly over the second of the edges formed in the step like formation in the edges 18 and the notched tabs 27 are folded toward the rear wall and are disposed in slits 37 in the inter mediate tabs 19. The area defined by the fold lines 30, 15, 23 and 15 is then'folded to extend at rightangles to the rear wall 10 and the tab 25 is disposed behind the tab 12 and the tabs 13 are bent rearwardly and the notched portions 1 1 therein are connected in slits 38 provided in the intermediate tabs 19.
It is manifest from the foregoing descrip tion that the .above arrangement will provide three supporting surfaces arranged in different planes in step like formation and these supporting surfaces will be disposed on the step like formation arranged in the edges 18.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variation and modi fications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: i I
A blank for a display stand formed from foldable .material and having parallel fold lines extending thereacross, said blank having other fold lines extending thereacross betabs and said last named tabs, said last named tabs being of relatively restricted width, and fold lines extending across said blank between said firstnamed fold lines aligned with the ends of the tabs formed outwardly of said first named'fold lines.
In'testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
