2,524,345 PACKAGING AND DISPLAYING DEVICE Manuel Essman, New York, N. Y. Application April 24, 1948, Serial No. 23,111
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel device for packaging and displaying neckties and has as its primary object the provision of a device which will retain neckties in clean and neat condition while simultaneously allowing the neckties to be viewed instantaneously for selection.
Neckties are generally displayed in retail establishments either hanging from upright tie racks, or stacked within a display counter, or even laid out loosely on a counter or table. Repeated handling of the neckties by salesmen and prospective purchasers frequently results in soiling and requires constant readjustment of the neckties to preserve a neat and attractive appearance.
The device of the present invention, on the other hand, allows neckties to be neatly displayed and inspected by prospective purchasers without requiring the harmful and undesirable handling and fingering which has been inevitable heretofore.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described for displaying and retaining neckties which may be fabricated inexpensively, which may be used effectively in the home and during travel and which conserves space.
The foregoing objects as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a mounting element upon which the necktie may be folded.
Fig. 2 illustrates the initial step of adjusting the necktie on the mounting element.
Fig. 3 illustrates a subsequent step in the folding of the necktie about the mounting element.
Fig. 4 illustrates the necktie completely folded about the mounting element, the folded necktie and mounting element being removably contained within a transparent wrapping or envelope.
Mounting element I may be cut from a substantially rectangular blank of cardboard, fiberboard or any other suitable material. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, mounting element or board II] has parallel sides and is formed along its top edge and adjacent one of its sides with a spacing tab II defining a mounting edge I2 on one side thereof for the reception of the folded end of necktie I3, as clearly shown in the drawing. A cutout I4 is provided so that the lower fold I3a of the necktie may be passed over the front face of the mounting element In to immediately underlie outer fold I312, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Upper fold I3?) and lower fold Ilia of the necktie are brought downwardly over the front face of mounting element I B to be received within bottom recess I 4 formed in the bottom edge thereof. Recess I I is preferably further provided with a medial depression I ia for the reception of lower fold I3a of the necktie and terminates laterally in a notch I5 for retaining the edge of upper fold I 312, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Upper fold I31) and lower fold I3a are next passed upwardly over the back of mounting element ID to be received within top recess I6 formed in the top edge of said mounting element on that side of spacing tab I I opposite mounting edge I2. Top recess I6 is preferably provided with a medial depression IBa for the reception of lower fold I311 of the necktie. An integral top edge tab I'I defines a lateral notch I 8 for retaining the edge of upper fold I319. The mounting of the necktie on element Iii is completed by passing the free ends of upper fold I31) and lower fold I3a downwardly across the front of said element, as shown in Fig. 4.
After having been adjusted on mounting element ID in the manner indicated, necktie l3 and said mounting element are inserted within a wrapper or envelope IQ of transparent material. Transparent envelope I9 may be formed from regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or the like. It will be noted that the top edge Ila of tab If and the top edge Ila of spacing tab I I preferably lie in. the same plane in order to properly align mounting element Ill within transparent envelope I9. Also the axis of bottom tie-receiving recess I l and top tie-receiving recess it are angularly inclined in opposite direction in order to fold the tie over the entire compass of mounting element Ill.
Mounting element I0 is so proportioned with respect to transparent envelope I9 as to present an integral finger-hold projection 26 for readily withdrawing said mounting element when the necktie is to be removed therefrom.
By the use of the novel device of the present invention it is apparent that ties may be individually mounted and displayed in their transparent envelopes for inspection by the prospective purchaser. The pattern and color of each tie may be viewed apart from the remaining ties in a particular collection and a neat, clean and attractive appearance preserved by eliminating excessive and repeated fingering. Upon being selected by the purchaser the packaged tie requires no additional wrapping or handling.
The device is adapted for a variety of uses in addition to its indicated use as a display and packaging device for retail establishments. For example, by slight modification, a, plurality of such devices may be mounted within a binder or portfolio which may be convenient carried in a handbag during travel or which may be placed within a drawer or upon a closet shelf to relieve congestion and conserve space This may be accomplished by the simple expedient of affixing a perforated backing strip (not shown) to the closed end of the transparent envelope of the device after which a number of such envelopes may be readily mounted in a looseleaf binder or the like to be easily turned for the selection of a particular tie or ties. V
The protective transparent stantially dustproof and, in combination with the mounting element [0, will preserve'thenecktie against the wrinkling, limpness, loss of shape and general abuse attendant upon hanging from conventional tie racks.
Since certain modifications may be made in the device of the present invention without de parting from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawing be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
