Application February 16, 1934, Serial No. 711,544 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-86) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelopes.
The invention has for an object the construction of an envelope which is characterized by the arrangement of a wire within one side thereof attached at the ends upon opposite corners, of said side and detachably arranged to facilitate the opening of the envelope.
More particularly the invention also contemplates the provision of reinforcement pieces secured upon said detachable corners to facilitate the removal of the corners for the opening of the envelope.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of perforations as the means for rendering said corners readily detachable.
Another one of the objects of this invention is the provision of sheet corner pieces secured within the detachable corners of the envelope and 2G having bayonet openings coactable with enlargements upon the ends of the wire arranged Within the side, for attaching the wire upon the corner pieces to facilitate .the opening of the envelope.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a corner of the envelope illustrated in Fig. 1 but shown with the reinforcement removed. f

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating the invention.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view showing in side elevation the sheet corner pieces and the wire therebetween for use in the envelope illustrated in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
The envelope with the wire opener on one side comprises sheet material in the form of an en.- velope 10 and having opposite corners 11 on one of the sides, such as side 12, formed by lines of perforations 13 so that the corners 1l are readily detachable. A wire 14 is arranged within the side 12 and is attached at the ends upon the detachable corners 11. More particularly each of the ends of the wire engage several times through and around the detachable corner pieces 11 producing the turns 14 clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. These turns serve to accomplish the attachment of the ends of the wire upon the corner pieces. Reinforcement pieces 15 are secured by glue, cement or the like upon the detachable corner pieces 11 and serve to cover and attach the turns 14' upon the corner pieces, and furthermore serve to reinforce the corner pieces so that 'they may be easily gripped to be detached.
The envelope may readily be opened by tearing one or the other of the corner pieces 1l or gripping the reinforcement pieces 15, and pulling and drawing upon the wire 14 to cause the wire to cut 75 the edge 12 open.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form merely in the manner in which the ends of the wires are attached upon the corner pieces. More 80 particularly, in the latter form illustrated, the envelope 10 is provided with detachable corner pieces 11 produced by the perforated lines 13. These corner pieces ll are on opposite ends of the side 12. Sheet corner pieces 16 are 85 secured within the detachable corners 11 and have bayonet openings 17 at inclinations with the smaller ends at the bottom diverging to the top and for coaction with the ends of the wire 14 extended along within the side 12. More particularly the wire 14 has its ends formed with enlargements 18 comprising portions thereof formed into knots. These enlarged ends 18 are of'such size so that they may pass through the large portions oi' the bayonet slots 17. 95 and when the ends are moved, into the smaller portions of the bayonet slots. Then the wire is firmly attached upon the corner pieces. Each of the corner pieces 16 is provided with a section 19 adapted to be pasted or in any other manner secured Within the detachable corner 11. As illustrated the pieces 19 are gummed to facilitate the attachment. Each of the detachable corner pieces 11 is reinforced with the reinforcements 15 so as to provide additional means by 105 which they may be readily gripped and detached.
YThe feature of the bayonet slots 17 and the corner pieces 16 is that adjustment is readily possible to set the corner pieces 16 at distances from each other when the wire 14 is stretched 110 straight, so that the corner pieces may rea ily fit within the corners of one side of the envelope. It will be understood that when the wire 14 is formed with knots it will not be of exact predetermined length, but a selection of bayonet slots 17 would adjust for said variation. Still further the ends of the wire may be produced with diiferent types of enlargements, and in such event, the adjustment permitted by selections of bayonet slots would be useful in adapting the arrangement to envelopes of slightly different sizes.
The opening ci the modified form of envelope is identical to the form previously described. One or the other of the corners may be detached and then the Wire 14 drawn for causing cutting of the side 12 to open the side.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. An envelope, comprising sheet material in the form of an envelope and having opposite corners on one side formed by lines of perforations so that the corners are readily detachable, sheet corner pieces secured Within said detachable corners and having bayonet openings, and
a. wire within said side of the envelope and having enlargements at the ends engageable with said bayonet openings for attaching the wire upon the corner pieces.
2. An envelope, comprising sheet material in the form of an envelope and having opposite corners on one side formed by lines of perforations so that the corners are readily detachable, sheet cerner pieces secured within said detachable corners and having bayonet openings, and a wire Within said side of the envelope and having enlargements at the ends engageable with said bayonet openings for attaching the wire upon the corner pieces, said corner pieces having portions pasted within said detachable corners to comprise the attachment of the corner pieces within the detachable comers.
3.. An envelope, comprising sheet material in the form of an envelope and having opposite corners on one side formed by lines of perforations sothat the corners are readily detachable, sheet corner pieces secured within said detachable corners and having bayonet openings, and
a wire within said side of the envelope and having enlargements at the ends engageable with said bayonet openings for attaching the wire upon the corner pieces, said bayonet slots having their reduced portions sloping towards each other so that the distance therebetween is smaller than the distance between the large portions to prevent dispiacement of the wire once engaged.
