Application November 10, 1945, Serial No. 627,887
6 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book covers and carriers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device which is madeof one piece of material folded and cut in a novel manner to act as a book cover and carrier.
Briefly and generally speaking the invention, in its preferred form, includes a single sheet of material of paper, cloth, or leather. This sheet is folded along its top and bottom edge in the usual manner to provide means to enclose the top and bottom portions of covers of a book. The end portions of the sheet are folded over toward each other in the usual manner to enclose the front portions of covers of a book.
Outwardly beyond the line of fold the end portions are cut in two spaced lines, each line beginning and ending at the line of fold, and this cutting forms a handle portion and, in the preferred form, a flap portion which is adapted to act as a book mark. Preferably the lines of cutting are parallel and arcuate in formation; and in a modified form of my invention the handle portions and the area of the sheet immediately adjacent the line of fold are reinforced to provide extra strength when the sheet is adapted to act as a book carrier.
The present preferred forms which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device of my invention partially folded into position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device folded ready to receive a book cover;
' Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the device with a book enclosed therein and adapted to be supported thereby; and
Fig. 4 shows a fragmentary perspective view of a modification of my invention.
As shown in the drawing, the present preferred form of the device includes a sheet of material which along its top and bottom edges 9 is folded inwardly to form lateral flaps H. The sheet at its ends is then folded transversely along the lines 12 to form front flaps l6, and these portions in the usual manner are adapted to receive and partly envelop the covers of a book.
Outwardly beyond each transverse fold I2 the sheet is out along spaced lines 1 and 8 to form an aperture 6, a handle portion l3 and a medial flap M which is preferably employed as a book mark. As shown in Fig. 3 the flaps l6 are bent to envelop the covers of a book which is placed in the usual manner on the sheet. The handle portions l3 are then extended upwardly as shown to be gripped in the hand so that the device may act as a book carrier as well as a book cover. The medial flaps It extending as shown may be employed to retain the marking of one or two places in the book.
This device is simple and inexpensive, since it can be made from one piece of material which may be paper, leather, cloth or other similar material. If it is desired to reinforce the device, I cover the handle portions l3 and the area of the sheet just inside the transverse folds l2 with an extra reinforcing layer I5 so that these portions, which are subjected to most of the wear and tear and strain will be strengthened Although the lines 1 and 8 along which the handle and flaps are out are illustrated as being parallel and semicircular, they may be made nonparallel and of other shapes than circula or arcuate. However the cutting lines 1 and 8 preferably, although not necessarily, intersect the transverse folds I2.
While the invention has been described in detail and with respect to a present preferred form thereof, it is not to be limited to such details and form since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications of the invention which may come within the language or scope Of any one or more of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A book cover and carrier comprising a sheet of material folded inwardly adjacent its ends along transverse lines to form cover flaps, and a handle cut from at least one of said flaps and integral with the sheet, said handle extending outwardly in the direction opposite the inward folding of the cut flap.
2. A book cover and carrier comprising a sheet of material folded inwardly adjacent its ends along transverse lines to form cover flaps, a substantially arcuate apertured portion in at least one of said flaps, and a handle formed from said apertured portion and integral with the sheet, said handle extending outwardly in the direction opposite the inward folding of the apertured flap.
3. A book cover and carrier comprising a sheet of material folded inwardly adjacent its ends along transverse lines to form cover flaps, a substantially arcuate apertured portion in at least one of said flaps, and a handle and a medial flap formed from said apertured portion and integral flap portion adapted to be folded inwardly to act as a book mark.
5. A book cover and carrier which comprises a sheet of material folded adjacent its ends along transverse lines of fold to enclose the covers of a book, and cut outwardly beyond the lines of fold along two spaced arcuate lines to form a handle portion, said spaced lines intersecting the line of fold.
6. A book cover and carrier which comprises a sheet of material folded adjacent its ends along transverse lines of fold to enclose the covers of a book, and cut outwardly beyond the lines of fold along two spaced parallel arcuate lines to form an arcuate handle portion and a medially disposed flap portion adapted to act as a book mark.
