DISPENSING PACKAGE Original Filed Dec. 50, 1935 THWBS HRH%TRONG-.)
202i? Hozncu Patented Aug. 22, 1939 Thomas Armstrong, Salem, reg.,
assignor to Western Paper Converting Company, Salem,
Oreg.
Application 7 Renewed My present invention, in its broad aspect, has to do with improvements in packages for paper, as for instance ream packages for typewriter paper and the like, and more particularly it is my purpose-to provide .a package having means incorporated therein forreadily and quickly re-V moving an entire end of the package to expose the end edges and a partof the body of the contents whereby the contents (asforinstance type- 10 writer paper) may be withdrawn a portion at a time, as for instance sheet by'sheet for use, while the rest of the contents of the package remains protected bythe cover. Furthermore, it is my purpose to accomplish these ends in the simplest manner, so that the package may be opened without tools or thelike. I provide what I shall hereinafter term a .tear-strip or weakened band in the package (or rather the cover) which when removed detaches the end from the body, a thereby exposing the ends of the sheets of paper which are the contents.
I am aware that dispensing packages having weakened portions adapted for ready removal have, been provided in conjunction with paper 26 articles specially folded, as for instance handker-- chiefs and the like, but my invention diflers from these in that the entire end of the package (or rather the cover) is adapted to be removed so that while the contents of the package is pro- 30 tected, the end' and a part of the body of the content is exposed for withdrawal a portion at a time. Furthermore, in these prior art devices it is usually a dispensing'opening whichis formed, whereas in my package'an entire end part, of the cover of the package is removed.
In the drawing wherein like characters of reference are used to designate. like or similar parts throughout the several views;--" V Figure l is a perspective view of a package of typewriter paper formed in accordance with my invention, I Figure 2 is a perspective view'of the end of the package showing the "tear-strip" partly detacbed,'and o Figure-3 is a-perspective view of the end of v the package showing the end portion of the cover entirely removed to expose the contents of thew 7 .and the detach shown a pack v package.
Inthe drawing, wherein Ihave age-of with acover Lhaving atoptbottom'tendslandaideel; therein designed to be used with the body portion form- December '30, 1935, Serial No. 56,787
February .7, 1939 provided a weakened band or tear-strip i adjacent one end thereof. This band is formed by 'spaced parallel lines of perforations 1 extending transversely completely about the cover. The cover has the usual meeting edges 8, so that the 5 "tear-strip 6' may be removed by slipping the i flnger nail under this edge and grasping the end of the tear-strip and pulling upon it .until it'is removed by severing along the perforated lines 1; and if desired the gum may be omitted under 10 the end of the tear-strip'so that the operation of removingit will be facilitated. The contents of the package is shown at 9 in Figure 3, in which, figure the end portion of the cover, designated I0 is removed, the tear-strip having been de- 1| tached andv the end part removed to expose the ends and a part of the body of the sheets of paper forming the contents 9. The body H- of the cover is not removed so that the body of the contents is protected, while the contents may be lo removed sheet by sheet as indicated in Figure 3. Y
-My invention is especially useful in ofllceswhere typewriter paper and the like may be used, and at the same time protected, by my present package. v
While I have shown and described a. special 26 form of my invention, it is to be understood that changes in form, size, shape anddetails maybe made provided they fall within the scope of what is claimed.
I claim: In a package cover of the type formed of single ply material the meeting edges of which overlap and are sealed together with adhesive, a pair of spaced, parallel weakened lines adjacent one end of thepackage cover formed, by series of. perforations therein forming a removable strip which may be torn out to sever the body of the cover from the end portion, the overlappingportion of the cover beneath the removable strip having no adhesive thereon and-being unsealed so that a fingernail or instrument'may be inserted thereunder to;grasp the end of the strip to facilitate removing the same; the package cover ing a dispensing container for the contents while u it is being used and withdrawn a part at a time, 7
I end. when removed serving to give access to the contents without removing or disturbing the body portion.
moms ARMSTRONG.
