i Application nlecl October 26, 1909. Serial No. 524,595.
To all whom it may concern: le it known that Priimr SANDS, a citizen oi the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Self-igniting-Match Box, of which the following is a specification.
,lhis invention relates to an improved match-box in which a certain number of matches can be safely and conveniently cairied inthe `docket and ignited when pulled out of the ox 'without danger of igniting the remaining matches, and the invention consists of a match-box made of a blank provided with a closing top yilap, a front and a rear iiap secured together' by wire clips or any other suitable device. A. blank inserted between the .iront and the back lap of the match-box divides the same into two coinpartincnts forming receptacles ior matches. 'lhe iront flap of said box and the dividing blank near its upper edge is provided with au abrasive material to ignitel the matches when pulled out ot' the box. The dividing blank may bear side portions forming keys to engage with the wire clips, when the blank is inserted between the front and the rear oi said box. 'llhese and othei features oi' this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
.ln the aecoinpanying dravlf'ings, ligu're l is a iront elevation oli a match-box embodying this invention. Fig. .2 is a cross` section on liuc 2 9. in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front ele- `ration of a. blank, designed to divide the match-box into two compartments. l*l ig. 4 is a front elevation of a modification of the blank shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to Figs. l and 9., the match-box herein shown comprises a front portion 1 a back portion 2, secured together by wire clips 5 or any other su it able device, to form a pocket for the reception oi the matches 7, an upper portion 8 to be bent on line l1 to orin a cover 3 for said receptacle. rlhe inner face of said iront portion 1 near itsnpper edge is rovided with an igiiiting material 8'. A b ank 6 shown in Fig. 3 having its inner face partly provided with an abrasive material 8 is inserted between the front, and the rear flap oi' said match receptacle dividing the same into two compartments to furnish ample space for two rows of matches 7. 'lllie inner tace of a portion 4. of the front flap l ot' the match-box and a portion of the inner face of the dividing blank (3 being provided with an abrasive' material to i nite the matches in the front row as wel as the mat-ches in the rear row when pulled out of Athe box.
d modification di die dividing biiiiik e is y shown in Fig. 4t, where the sides l0 angular extending will form keys to engage with the wire clips 5 when the dividing blank 6 is placed between the front l and the rear ap 2 of said receptacle, shown Yin dotted lines in Fig. 1. The cut out 9. at the lower end of said blank 6 will allow the extensions 10 to nieve back when the blank 6 is placed into the box for a stationary securing therein.
Having thus described the invention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is:
1. A. match-box composed of a :front vflap and a rear flap secured together b wire clipsyto form a box, a closing top ap extendine from said rear flap, a dividing blank rhaving its sides angular extending forming keys to engage with the said wire clips, when the blank is placed between the front and the rear of said box to be stationary secured therein, to divide the box into compartments, the front iap and the dividing blank near its upper edge being provided with an abrasive material to ignite the matches, when pulled out of the box, substantially as described.
2. A. .match-box composed bf a front Hap, and a rearl Hap secured together by wire clips, to form a box and a closing top flap extending from said rear iap, a dividing blank h'avinr its sides angular extending, forming keys to engare with the said wire clips, when the blank 1s placed between the front and the rear of the box to secure it stationary therein, to divide the box into coin artmeiits, said blank at its lower end bearing a cut ont to allow the extending side.
portions to move inward when said blank is placed into the box, the front flap and the dividing blank near its upper edge being provided with an abrasive material to ignite the matches when pulled out of the box, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with the front and rear walls, of clips securing said walls in spaced position. the inner faces of the said walls each being provided near the top thereof with a coating ot" abrasive material, a plate forming a partition inserted in the device -and bearing against the clips, and abrasive material carried by the upper portions of surfaces and thus insuring the ignition of 10 both faces or the plate, said material on the the match as it is Withdrawn.
plate serving in connection with the mateln testimony whereof l have signed my rial on the Walls of the device to Contact name to this specification in the presence of With the head of the match as the same 1s two subscribing witnesses.
Withdrawn from either compartment, the f Pl-HLP SANDS. location of the material on both sides of the Witnesses: match insurin the frictional engagement of L. E. HICKS,
