POWDER-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910. Serial No. 550,654.
Application filed March 21, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, \VILLIAM R. GILLETTE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 5 of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Powder-Box, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application, is a box adapted to contain a powder of the sort which is commonly applied to the face; and it is the object of the invention to provide in a box of this character, a means whereby the powder may be sifted from the box at will, the box being closed in a novel and improved manner,
at the will of the operator, to prevent the sifting of the powder.
The drawings show but one form of the invention, and it is to be understood that changes, properly falling within the scope of what is claimed, may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the draw ings.
In the accompanying draw1ngs,F1gure 1 shows the device 1n transverse section; Fig. 2 1s a perspective of the outer portion of the box and the lid which is hingedly connected therewith, the lid being in open position; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device,
showing the parts thereof in the position which they will assume when the device is used as a mirror; and Fig. t'is a detail perspective of the inner of the telescoping members which enter into the construction of the device.
The powder box consists of a body, com- 40 posed of telescoped parts, the outer of which parts is denoted by the numeral 1, and the inner of which parts is denoted .by the numeral 2. The outer of these telescoped parts is of annular structure, and is provided at its lower edge with a peripheral flange 3.
Resting upon this peripheral flange 3, is a mirror 1, constituting the bottom of the powder box. the part 1, rests a false bottom 5, preferably fashioned from paste-board or cloth.
As shown at 6, a lid 7 is hinged to the outer part 1, and is adapted to be swung into 'the'closed position shown in Fig. 1, to inclose the periphery of the outer portion 1.
form a tongue 9, which, engaging the side Upon this mirror 4, within is prolonged to wall 17 of the outer part 1, serves to hold the lid 7 in the closed position shown in Fig. 1. -Beneat-h this tongue 9, the side wall 17 of the part 1 is provided with a plurality of perforations 10, and when the lid 7 is in the closed position shown in Fig. 1, the tongue 9 serves, not only as a means for holding the lid in vits closed position, but, as well, as a means for sealing the sev eral perforations 10.
The inner member 2 is adapted to be telescoped within the outer member 1, and the side wall 11 of the inner member 2 is cut away as denoted by the numeral 12, about the perforations 10, so that, when the lid 7 is swung into an open position, the perforations 10 may constitute a connnunication with the interior of the boX.
As seen most clearly in Fig. 1 the top 1 1 of the inner-part 2 is downwardly convexed,
while the top 15 ofthe lid, 7 is upwardly convexed, thus defining between them a chamber adapted to receive. the wiping rag l6.
The operation of the device is as follows :The interior of the box, between the parts 1 and 2, is filled with face-powder, and the wiping rag 16 is located, as shown in Fig. 1, upon the top 14 of the inner part- 2,
beneath the top 15 of the lid 7, the tongue 9 closing the perforations 10 in the side wall 17 of the outer part 1. When it is desired to use the device, the lid 7 is swung open, and the powder is sifted through the openings 12 and 10 upon the rag,16, the tongue 9, by the opening of the lid f7, having been withdrawn from in front of the perforations 10. The device may then be disposed as shown in Fig. 8, the lid 7 serving as a handle for the manipulation of the mirror 4: which constitutes the bottom of the box.
Obviously, by rotating the member 2 within the member 1, the opening 12 in the side wall 11 of the member 2, may be moved away from the perforations 10 on the side wall 17 of the member 1, the perforations 10 thus being sealed, even when the lid 7 is open, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed is 1. A device of the class described consistmg of abody and a lid hinged thereto, the body having perforations in its sidewall, and the lid having a depending tongue arranged to serve at once asa. closure for the perforations, and as a frictionally operating frictionally,
element engaging the body to hold'the lid in closed position.
'2. A device of the class described including telescoped parts, the outer of which is provided with perforations in its side wall, and the inner of which is cut away in its side wall about the perforations; and a lid hinged to the outer of the telescoping parts, and having 21 depending tongue arranged to serve at once as a closure for the perforations, and as a frictionally operating element engaging the outer of the telescoped parts, to hold the lid in closed position.
3. A device of the class described consistingof telescoped pants, constituting together, a closed receptacle, there belng openings in said parts, communicating with the receptacle; a lid hinged to the outer of said and arranged to serve as a closure for the openings; the lid and the inner of said parts, defining a chamber between them, when the lid is in closed position.
