PETER BOUDREAU, 0F SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED E. GUERTIN, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER BOUDREAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpenters clamps and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device by which doors or windows or plain boards may be supported upon an edge so that the workman may readily plane the upper edge thereof or mortise or otherwise treat the same.
The invention consists in certain peculiar features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my .invention,-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in its perspective position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clamp. Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the several parts separated and in perspective.
The clamp constructed in accordance with my invention embodies two members or jaws each comprising a base portion 1 and an upper clamping portion 2. The base portion is provided with supporting feet 3 at one end and is substantially of a box-like form, having parallel side flanges 4 projecting upward from its edges. The working portion 2 of each member is in the form of a heavy block having its lower edge inserted between the flanges & and secured therebetween by screws or bolts 5 and the inner ends of the working portions of the members are in the same plane with the inner ends of the base or supporting portions, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. The members are connected by a strap spring 6 having one end rigidly secured to the base portion of one member and extending therefrom between the flanges 4 of the other member and provided at its free end with a threaded head 7 which is engaged by an adjusting bolt or screw 8 which is mounted in a lug 9 provided at the outer end of the working portion of the said member.
The outer or free end of the adjusting bolt or screw is provided with a handle 10 by means of which it may be rotated and the said screw is provided with an annular Specification of Letters Patent.

shoulder 11 which engages the inner face of the lug 9 and has a collar or stop 12 rigidly secured to its shank so as to bear against the outer face of the member whereby the adjusting screw will be prevented from moving longitudinally of the jaw. As a result of this arrangement, the rotation of the adjusting screw or bolt will cause the head 7 of the connecting spring to travel along the screw, and thereby vary the dis tance between the clamping faces of the members so as to adapt the clamp to boards or doors of various thicknesses.
The spring 6 holds the members of the clamp at a slight inclination to each other so that the board or other article to be held may be readily inserted between the members and the weight of the article will overcome the resistance of the spring so as to bring the clamping members firmly against the opposite sides of the board, whereby it will be securely held in an upright position.
It will readily be observed that I have provided a device in which the connecting spring and the adjusting device will be housed within the base portions of the members of the clamp and yet ready access may be had to the same should it be necessary to clean or repair the members of the clamp. The parts may be readily disassembled so as to economize space in shipping and may be as readily again assembled when they have reached their destination.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is 5- A clamp comprising two members each consisting of a base portion having upstanding flanges at its edges, and a working portion secured between the said flanges, a con necting spring having one end secured to the base portion of one member between the flanges of the same and its opposite end provided with a threaded head between the flanges of the opposite member, an adjusting bolt swiveled in a depending lug at the end of said member and engaging the threaded head on the connecting spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER BOUDREAU.
