H. G. HAVBR. FIREPLAGE FENDER. APPLIOATION FILED APB. 24, 1905.
Ill K Inventor Wtnesseg y www Attorney UNITED AsTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY G. HAVER, OF HAMILTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FRED J. MEYERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
FIREPLAGE-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application led April 24, 1905. Serial No'. 257.157.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. HAVER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hamments in adjustable fenders for ire laces,
will be readily understood from the fol owing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Flgure 1 is a perspective view of a fender exemplifying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side e evation of a portion of one of the wings at its oint of juncture with the front.
In t e drawings, 1 indicates the front member of the screen, the same being formed of wire network mounted on a skeleton frame; 2, the end wings thereof, of similar construction, both wings being alike and being hereinafter described in the singular number; 3, the top rail of the front 4, the bottom rail of the front; 5, the top rail of the wing; 6, the bottom rail of the wing; 7, the front vertical frame member of the wing; 8, the rear vertical frame member of the Wing 9, a rearwardly-proj ecting clamp secured to the end of the top rail of the front, there being one of these clamps at each end of the front, each clamp presenting an upper and a lower j aw, between which engages the front end of the top rail of the appropriate wing; 10, a thumb-screw passing through the jaws of the clamp and-through the top rail of the Wing and forming apivot on which the top rail swings horizontally; 11, a hinge-piece extending rearward rigidly from the base of the end of the front piece ,this hingepiece being pivotally engaged by the front ver-tical frame member of the Wing 12, a nut dis osed below the lower jaw of the clamp an engaged by the thread ofthe thumbscrew, a downwardly-,turned portion of the lower jaw of the clamp engaging the side of the nut and preventing its rotation, and 13 the end vertical frame members of the front piece.
The wings may be angularly adjusted to suit the width of fireplace in connection with which the screen is to be employed, thus permitting the screen to be ada ted to replaces having a width consideraby less or more than the length of the front member. The Wingshaving been properly adjusted to suit the Width of the iireplace, the thumb-screws may be tightened up, thus forming a lock preserving the integrity of the screen for its adjusted dimensions, the lock making the structure rigid for any adjusted width. When the screen is to be shipped or stored, the thumb-screws may be loosened and the Wings folded flat against the back of the front. It is to be observed that the foot of the front vertical frame member of the wing forms the lower pivot for the wing, while the thumbscrew forms the upper pivot, and also the locking device, the front frame member 7 of the wing being oHset at its top to make room for the clamp-and-screw arrangement. The specific form of clamp-and-screw device as a means for permitting the angular adjustment of the wings and for locking them in adjusted position, while it is a convenient, economical, and generally admirable construction, is to be considered merely as a preferable exempliiication of my'invention.
I claim as my invention- In an adjustable folding replace-soreen,
Athe combination, substantially as set forth,
of a front screen member, wing screen members, pivotal connections between the front edges of the wing members and the ends of the front member, and a clamp and thumbscrew locking device for securing thev wing members in any adjusted angular relationship to the front member.
HENRY G. IHAVER.
