Description

E. GILES. WINDOW SHELF BRACKET.
7 APPLICATION rum) mmz lsis Patented July 29, 1913.
- and having permanent connection at 5 with EDGAR-GILES, or WHITE LAKE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
WINDOWi-SHELF BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, .1 91 3.
Application filed .Tanuary Zl, 1913. Serial No. 743,361.
To aZZ whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Lake, in the county of Aurora and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVindowShelf Brackets, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to brackets; and it has for its object the provision ofa deviceof this character which may be readily connected with the side bars of a window casing and arranged therein so as to effectually support a platform on which may be accommodated flower receptacles orthe like.'
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bracketwhich will be adjustable whereby to accommodate itself to window frames of different sizes.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de-. scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window. showing the application of companion brackets thereto; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through one of the clamping elements.
With reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings alined b tlCkGlS 1 are shown connected with the vertical side bars A of the window casing or frame. These brackets are identically constructed and it is believed that a descriptibn of one will sutlice for the other. Each bracket includes a vertical arm 2 which may be constructed from a single piece of sheet iron or suitable material and provided with an upper supporting flange 3 to which is riveted or otherwise suitably secured one end of a platform supporting arm 4, the latter being horizontally disposed the upper end of a brace 6. Said brace is extended in the direction of the lower vertical arm 2 and is terminally connected therewith through the medium of a bolt 7. The platform supporting arm 4. is provided with vertical guardsS, which are adapted to engage against the board or platform forming member 9, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to prevent the lateral shifting of the platform when the device is in use.
The vertical arm 2 is provided with identical upper and lower clamps, the latter including plates 10 and 11, which are provided with'alined elongated slots 12 which receive the bolt 7 From this construction, it is evident that the plates may be adjusted on each other so that their effective clamping end can be brought into secure contact with the opposite faces of the vertical side bar of the window frame. The effective clamping end of the plate 11 is formed by bending one end of the plate at right angles to the main body portion of the plate so as to provide a clamping jaw 13, which is provided along its vertical edge with a series of inwardly extending teeth 14.
The clamping element of the plate 10 coir prises a jaw 15 having a toothed edge 16. Said jaw 15 is provided with hinged knuckles 17, which are associated with similar hinged knuckles 18 of the plate 10 and connected therewith through the medium of a pintle 19.. Through this connection, it evident that the jaw 15 may be adjusted angularly with relation to the jaw 13,,
The jaw 13 is provided with a threaded opening 20 which receives a correspomlingly threaded end 21 of a clamping bolt 22. The opposite end the bolt is extended through a slot 23 in the movable jaw 15 and provided with a manipulating crank portion 94, which may be operated manually so as to adjust the bolt in a horizontal direction and thereby effect relative angular adjustments of the companion jaws 13 and 15. The said bolt is preferably upset, as at 25 and provided with a nose 26 which is adapted to engage against the jaw 15 and thereby move the same on its .pintle when feeding the bolt in one direction.
The upper clamp includes clamping ole ments l0 and 11 which are identical with the lower plates, beingconnectcd for horizontal adjustment on the vertical arm 2 through the medium of a bolt 27.
When the brackets are secured in proper alinement upon the companion side bars of the window frame, as shown in Fig. 1, a platform such as a board or the like may be extended across the horizontal arms at and sustained in a horizontal position thereby, so as to permit flower ported thereon.
From the foregoing description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
pots or the like to be supthe construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiringa more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim is j 1. A bracket comprising a horizontal arm,
a clamp carriedby said arm and comprising -hor1zontally ad ustable plates, one of sald plates terminating 1n a hxed aw having a horizontally threaded passage therein, a pivoted jaw carried by the other plate, means for holding both plates in adjusted positions, and a member lying behind the plates and having a threaded portion adjustable in the opening of the fixed jaw and having its opposite end provided with an integral manipulating portion having a nose extending in thedirection of the pivoted jaw and operating across the jaw and against the same for moving the pivoted jaw angularly with relation to the fixed jaw when said member is rotated in onedirection.
2. A bracket comprising a horizontal arm, a vertical arm, a brace connecting the vertical arm with the horizontal arm, identical clamps carried by the bracket and'disposed at the opposite ends of the vertical arm and each embodying horizontally adjustable plates, means for holding the plates in ad? justed positions, one of the platesterminat ing in a tired angularly bent jaw, a'horizon- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR GILES.
