COMBINED BOOK-REST AND CHART-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,824, dated Qatober 4, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CURRY SAMUEL SMALL, a citizen of theUnited States, residing atGoopei stown, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Book-Rests and OhartSupports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in combined book-rests and chart-supports; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

The' object of my invention is to provide a combined book and chart rest for use in exhibitions and schools, which is so constructed as to adapt it to be folded into a small space and to be elevated or lowered, as may be desired, the parts of which are simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled and understood, positive in their result, and cheaply manufactured. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device shown adjusted for use. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the parts shown as foldedand adjusted for disuse. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4: is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the plate 0.

A indicates a central standard, which is mounted in a tripod, B, and passes through a casting, B, to which it is adjustably secured by a set-screw, W, and to which the legs I) of the tripod are pivotally secured. The casting B is formed with a series of recesses, b, in which the upper ends of the legs I) engage, and are pivotally mounted therein, being pivoted at the point 5 On the top portion of the casting B a circular plate, B, is mounted, and is provided with a series of circular slots, b

, which are engaged by binding or set screws b, which pass therethrough and into the top portion of the casting B, and retain the said circular plate B in contact with the said casting, and are so adjusted as to allow the said plate to have a revolution when desired; or, if

it is desirable, the said plate may be rigidly secured in connection with the top portion of the casting B. Formed integrally with the lower edge of the said circularplate l3 and U depending therefrom are three lugs, b, which are adapted to be turned over the top portions of the legs b and retain the same in operative resting position, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to fold the legs of the tripod for transportation or other purposes, the circular plate is turned until the said lugs disengage from the top portion of the legs I), as shown in Fig. 2, when the said legs may be turned in toward the vertical position of the central standard or folded.

To the top portion of the central standard, A, a cross-bar, G, is secured, and the rear portion thereof has a recessed plate, 0, which is secured thereto, and with which the head of a screw-threaded bolt, 0, engages, and has sliding movement therein. The bolt 0 passes through the central standard,A, at this point, and is engaged by an adjusting winged nut, c.

The said recessed plate 0 is formed with cir cularrecesses or depressions, both vertical and horizontal, which engage with the central standard, and thereby provides a more steady support between the two parts. The top portion of the cross-bar O has metallic loops 0 secured thereto, which are adapted to retain the map or chart rods and support the same when open, or when rolled up the said maps or charts may be inserted in the said loops and be held thereby. To the lower edge of the said cross-bar O a bar, 0 is hinged by means of the hinges c, and to this lower bar, 0 a folding book-rest, D, is secured. This book-rest D is constructed of a series of longitudinal bars pivotally connected to each other, and are adapted to be folded up against the said bar 0 as will be readily understood.

To one side of the central-standard, A, adjacent to the cross-bar O, a slotted adjustable supporting-arm, E, is secured, and controlled in its position by a clamping winged nut, d, which engages with a screw-bolt, d, passing through the said standard at right angles to the upperbolt, c. This bolt d passes throughthe slot e in the arm E, and when the said arm is adjusted as desired the said nut is screwed against the same and clamps the arm against the central standard, A. The one end of this arm E is provided with a stud or pin, 0, which engages with an aperture in the lower bar of the book-rest D, and thereby retains the same in an inclined supported position, as shown in Fig. 1.

When it is desired to fold the several parts of the device, as shown in Fig. 1, the nuts 0 and d are loosened until the bar 0 and the arm E may be turned down against the standard A in a folded position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the legs I) of the tripod in like manner folded in against each other, as hereinbefore described.

The advantage of my improved form of chart-rest and book-support is, that the parts remain intact at all times, and when folded provide an adjustable and convenient device, and which may be readily adjusted for use when desired. 7

The parts are all readily and easily operated, requiring no mechanical skill to under stand their several relative connections and adjustments.

The novelty, utility, and adaptability of my improved device being apparent, it is un necessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.

' Having thus described my invention,whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the central adjustable standard, A, the casting B, supporting the standard and having recesses formed in its side, the legs pivoted in said recesses, and the flat slotted plate B, turning on the top of he casting, and having lugs I), projecting downward from its edge, adapted to engage with the legs and hold them in a supporting position, substantially as described.

2. In a combined chart and book rest, the combination of the central standard, the casting 13, having the recesses formed therein, the legs 6, engaging with the recesses in said casting, the adj nsting-serew W, the slotted plate 13, having the depending lugs d and the hinding-screws I), substantially as described.

3. The eombination,with thecentral adjustable standard, A, of the cross-piece 0, having the slotted metallic strip 0, constructed as set forth, the bolt 0, and the winged nut 0, substantially as described.

4. In a combined chart and book rest, the combination, with the central standard, A,of the cross-piece O, the folding bookrest secured to the lower edge thereof, the metallic loops secured to the top portion thereof, and the adjustable supportingarm E, substantially as described.

5. In a combined chart and book rest, the combination, with the central verticallyadjustable standard, A, of the folding tripod and the cross-piece 0, adapted to be folded down against the standard A in the same plane therewith,the book-rest D, hinged to the lower portion thereof, thesupporting adj ustable slotted arm E, the bolts 0 and d, and the nuts d and c, engaging said bolts, substantially as described.

6. In combination with the central vertically-adjustable standard, A, the cross-piece 0, adapted to be folded down against the standard A, the slotted metallic stri p O, secured to the rear of the strip 0, the book-rest D, hinged to said strip 0, and the slotted adjusting-arm E, substantially as described.
