TOOL FORREACHINGYSTORE eooos.
$EIEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,157, dated November 17, 1903.
Application filed August 18, 1902. Serial No. 120,002. (No model.) i
To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,FREDERIOKH.BERTSCHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Splitrock, county of Shawano, and State of W'isconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools for Reaching Store Goods, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined tool to be used in stores for reaching and taking down different kinds, styles, and shapes of merchandise which are suspended from hooks or supported upon shelves, &c., and which are located beyond the reach of a person; and it pertains to the combination and arraugementof the several parts for grasping and holding the goods while they are being lowered- The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the upper end of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a top View drawn on line m w of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identifiedpby the sameret erence-letters throughout the several views. A represents a reaching-staff to which the grasping mechanism for lowering goods is at tached. To the upper end 'of the'stafi A is attached a rigid plate B,-which is preferablymade of thin metal and is arranged at right angles to the staff. The plate Bis adapted to be inserted beneath a bolt of cloth or other similar goods which it is desired to remove from the shelf. beneath the goods, the goods are clamped and held firmly in place thereon by drawing down jecting bend G, which is adapted to engage in the parcel to be removed, and it is also provided with an upwardly-projecting lug H, which is adapted to engage with the hail of a pail or other receptacles which may be sus- VVhen the plate 13 is inserted pended from books along the walls and ceiling of a store and prevent them from dropping from the bar 0.
For the purpose of grasping and handling cylindrically-shaped vessels-such as fruitjars, lamp-chimneys, globes, &c.-I have provided my device with elasting clamping-arms the converging arms K K, which arms K are rigidly secured at their upper ends to the upper end of the operating-rod E, while their lower ends engage upon the outer sides of the respective clamping-arms I and cause such arms to be drawn toward each other by such downward movement, while said arms I are thrown apart by their own elasticity as said operating-rod and converging arms are moved in the opposite direction.
It will of course be understood that the opcrating-rod E is raised and lowered by raising and lowering theslide D upon the staff A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tool for reaching store goods, comprising a reaching-shaft, a plate rigidly secured at right angles thereto, a movable clamping-bar supported parallel with said plates from an operating-rod; parallel elastic clam ping-arms rigidly connected at one end with the upper end of said reaching-shaft, two vertically-arranged arms rigidly connected at their upper ends to the upper end of said operating-rod and having their lower ends diverging outwardly and engaging uponthe respective outer side of said elastic clamping arms whereby said operating-rod'is adapted'when drawn downward to simultaneously actuate said clamping-bar and elastic clamping-arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK H. BERTSOHY.
