BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 625,032, dated May-1e, 1899. Application file dIebruary 4, 1899. Serial No. `704,517. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM C. Hor/IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden,New Haven county, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to brackets; and my object is to improve the construction of the same.
One of my principal objects is to provide a bracket which shall have a universal adjustment for a lamp and a single locking means to fix the lamp in any of its adjusted positions.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, Figure l shows a plan view of my device; Fig. V2, a sectional view, and Figs. 3 and 4 details of construction.
In said preferred embodiment, A represents a supporting member having a bearing-face d, in this embodimentpreferably corrugated, as shown.
Bis a second supporting member having an opposing bearing-face adapted to rest against the bearing-face of A and preferably corrugated on both sides, as shown, to engage on either side with the corrugations in A. This member B in the present embodiment supports a lamp, (represented by b.)
C and D are two arms of a clamp adapted j to engage a part of the bicycle or other vehicle and having opposing grippingfaces c d and pivoted together so as to be relatively movable. One of these arms is pivoted to A at E,and the same pivot which allows the arms to be movable relatively to eachother preferably also forms a pivot for the clamp as a whole, allowing it to swing with relation to the member A. In the present embodiment the screws pass through the ends of the two members and enter threaded openings a a. in the member A, as shown in Fig. 4. The member C has preferably at one end thereof two lugs, one of which is shown at c', Fig. 3, and these lugs are perforated, as shown at c7. The arm D preferably has two similar perforated lugs. A pivot-pin E passes through the perforations in these four lugs, as indicated in Fig. l, and serves to relatively pivot these two arms together and also in this embodiment the memarm C,having aslot c3 therein. This projection and slot run around in an arc of a circle having the axis of the pivot of the clamp as its center. I have provided a means to draw said arms to- 'gether, and this means embraces a headed bolt E, passing through the arms C and Dand threaded at one end and having a wing-nut e.
c4 is a slot in one of said arms hav-V f ing a recessed portion o5, into which oneV conthereon.
ical end e of nut emayenter, so that it will not be readily disengaged therefrom, and a second larger part c6,whicl1 will allow this end e to pass therethrough, as shown in Fig. l, so
that arm D may be swung back from arm C. I
I have provided a single lock? to fix said two members A and B and also one arm of the clamp in fixed relation to each other. 4 This lock preferably consists of a screw connection embracing a bolt F, extending from member B, passing in this embodiment through. both of said members A and B and also extending through slot c3 and having a head f outside of the same.
f is a wing-nut screwing upon the threaded end of F, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and resting against the member B, so that when y screwed down upon it the two opposing faces other, While the other arm of the clamp may' still turn an pivot E.
In a bracket construction such as described herein the arms C and D may be clamped to the bicycle and` the lamp adjusted to its proper position. The nut f may then be screwed up, locking the two supporting members and the arm C in a fixed relation to each other. lhen it is desired to take the lamp oft from the ve.- hicle, it is only necessary to unscrew the nut e, which will allow the arm D to swing away from arm C, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, while yet arm C remains fixed with relation to the other parts. The nuts e and f' are preferably on the same side of the device, so
IOO
that these operations may be quickly performed. Many other advantages will be evident from the disclosure herein.
It Will be obvious that many changes may be made in the construction herein disclosed without departing from the spirit of my in-y vention.
What I claim is- 1. In a bracket tWo supporting members connected by a pivot and having opposing bearing-faces, a clamp having two relativelymovable gripping-arms, means to draw said arms together, one of said arms being connected by a pivot to one of said supporting members, the axes of said pivots being substantially at a right angle to each other, and a screw connection between said members and pivoted arm embracing a threaded bolt and a nut thereon to draw said bearing-faces toward each other and iix said members and said arm in fixed relation to each other.
2. In a bracket in combination, two supporting members pivoted together and having opposing bearing-faces, a clamp embracing a plurality of arms, one of said arms being pivoted to one oi said members, a slotted portion on one of said arms substantially in the form of an arc of a circle having the pivot of said arm as a center, and a screw connection to draw said members together passing through said slot in said arc-shaped portion to iix said members and said arm in fixed relation to each otheri A3. In a bracket in combination two relatively-movable supporting members having bearing-faces abutting against each other and connected by a pivot, one of said members supporting a lamp, a clamp embracing a pair of arms connected by a pivot at one end and having opposing gripping-faces thereon, a threaded bolt engaging both arms and a nut thereon, adapted to draw said arms toward each other, said pivot of said arms serving to pivot both of said arms to the other of said members, one of said arms having a slotted projection therefrom in the arc of a circle around said pivot, the axis of the pivot of said supporting members being substantially at a right angle to that of said clamping-arms, said pivot of said supporting members con sisting of a threaded bolt passing through said slot and members and having a head outside of said slot and a nut on the end of said bolt screwing against said lamp-supporting member and serving to iiX said tWo supporting members and arm in fixed relation to each other.
4. In a bracket in combination two supporting members pivoted together and having opposing bearing-faces, a clamp having an arm pivoted to one of said members, the axes of said two pivots being substantially at a right angle to cach other and a single lock to iix said two supporting members and pivoted arm inv fixed relation to each other.
Signed at Meriden, Connecticut, this 2d day of February, 1899.
WILLIAM C. HOMAN.
