Abstract

A portable vice comprising a vice 1 with one fixed jaw 3 and one movable jaw 4 attached to a base unit 2. The vice can used alone or as part of a pair to help support a door, worksurface or other planar material whilst modification operations are carried out.

DESCRIPTION
Portable Vice
During the fitting of wooden doors it can be difficult to hold the door firmly whilst planing the door to size, and also fitting the hinges locks and handles. The portable vice which is designed to be used in pairs overcomes this problem. In addition it can also be used for securely holding sheet materials such as worktops and long planks of wood as well as being used in furniture assembly. It can be used free standing, attached to floors or mounted on a bench or sawhorse again in pairs or multiples or singly.
The Portable Vice is a simple vice or clamp l attached to its own base 2. The base is a straight beam which is approximately 0.84 M or 33 inches long. The vice has deep jaws of approximately 0.1 5M or 6 inches deep. The device is designed to hold the workpiece betweenO. 16M and 0.2 metres above the floor. This gives an optimum height for doors of 33-36 inches wide and is also good for sheet materials of 4 feet wide or less.
The Portable Vice is used to clamp both ends of a door or workpiece on its side and hold it rigidly vertical so that its edge can be planed, drilled or chiselled depending on the required operation.
For normal use the vice is attached to the base in the centre position. However means are provided to position the vice anywhere along the length of the base.
The Portable Vice can also be used as a leg support if three or more are used this enables a workpiece to be held horizontally and at a variable height to the maximum of the base length.

  1. Portable Vice
    The Portable Vice is a vice or clamps consisting of a fixed jaw 3 and a moving jaw 4 the moving jaw has a means of applying pressure to securely hold a workpiece this is attached to a base 2 in the form of a beam.
    The Portable Vice is normally used free-standing and used in pairs also it can be used singly or in multples and can be attached to various surfaces.
    The Portable Vice can be used as a leg type support to hold a work piece horizontally if three or more are used.
