MATCH BOX AND HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, FRANK O. KULLANnuu, citizen of the United States, residing at Kensington, in the county of Douglas and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Boxes and Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The primary objectof this invention is an improved construction of match box which maybe used as an original shipping package in which .the matches may be sol and which is so constructed that it may be easily converted into a match holder, combining the useful characteristics of both of these above'named articles and doing away with the necessity of manually transferring the matches from the original shipping box or package to a distinct holder or safe. And the invention also has for its object, a. simple efiicient device of this character in which the parts are so arranged that they are held against accidental separation both when the device is used as a match box and as a match holder or safe.

With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the partsthat I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match box and holder constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the device arranged as a match safe; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the device arranged as a match box; and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the main or inner receptacle in which the matches are laced.

Corresponding and lie parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0% the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

The main receptacle 1 of my improved combined match box and holder may be formed of any desired substance or material and may be of any desired construction except that it is provided at one end with a cover flap 2. This flap may, if desired, be formed as an integral part of one end of the main receptacle 1, or be secured thereto as Specification of Letters Patent.

by glue or other fastening medium, the latter construction being selected in the present instance for the purpose of illustration only. The said flap is provided with a flange 3 which is secured to one end of the main receptacle 1 and is also provided with angularly disposed arms 4 that are designed to extend along opposite sides of the main receptacle 1, as clearly illustrated in the drawmg. The main or body portion of the flap 2 1s adapted to extend over the to portion of the main receptacle 1 at one en thereof, as shown, and is preferably formed on its inner or free edge with a cut out portion or recess 5.

6 designates the casing of the match box and holder, the same being open at its ends as shown and being intended to have the main receptacle 1 slipped into it. This casing 6 is formed, at one end of that wall which constitutes the front of the device when it is used as a match holder, with a cut-out portion 7 substantially of the extent of the main or body portion of the cover flap 2 which is designed to close such cutout portion when the parts are assembled as a match box and is also formed in its edge contiguous to such cut-out portion with a recess 8 corresponding to the recess 5 before mentioned. The casin 6 is provided in its side walls with longitudinal slots 9 designed to accommodate the arms 4 of the cover flap 2.

When the main rece tacle 1 receives its contents and is sli ped into the casing 6, the arms 4 are slippe into the side slots 9 and the cover fla 2 thus forms a closure for the cut-out portlon 7 of the casing 6, the arms being pushed inwardly as far as possible in the slots 9. It is to be particularly noted that the arms 4 are notched or recessed on one edge near their attached ends as indicated at 10 so that when they are pushed into the slots 9 they will effect a locking engagement with one end of the slots and effectually hold the main receptacle within the casing 6 and avoid any accidental separation of the parts.

When it is desired to use the device as a match holder or safe, it is only necessary to swing the flap 2 outwardly as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, the arms 4 slipping outwardly from the slots until the ends of the arms which are notched on one ed 'e as indicated at 11 enga e by said notched portions the opposite end slots 9 and thereby also limit of their movement with-the device arranged as a match holder or safe, the main receptacle will be extended slightly at its lower end from the casing 6 thereby retracting the upper end of the receptacle slightly within the upper end of the casingu so as to expose an opening 12 which is formed in the casing 6 designed to receive a nail or the like whereby the device may be suspended inany desired location.

It is to be understood thatif the cover 2 is glued or otherwise secured as a distinct part to the end of the main receptacle 1 it may be put on either aftenor before said receptacle has been filled with matches as desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: As a new article of manufacture, the herein described receptacle, a casing adapted to I with slots in its sides, the-receptacle being provided with a cover flap formed with a recessed edge, said flap being provided with side arms attached to the ends of saidflap and arranged to work in said slots, the arms bein formed at their extremities with notches adapted to engage the ends of the slots whereby to hold the flap in an oblique position relative to the front of the casing and said arms being also formed at their attached ends and on their edges opposite to the first named notches, with other notches adapted to engage said slots to lock the flap in a closed position, the arms being curved to hold the receptacle slightly protruding from the casing so as to expose said opening, as and for the purpose set forth.
