To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM O. PIERCE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Placerville, in the county of El Dorado and E State of California, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in Combined Collar-Fasteners and Tie-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be ar' full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in r means for fastening collars to the neck band of shirts, and the particular object of the invention is to provide a fastening which will I not only securely hold the collar on the neck band of the shirt but will also hold the tie in l posit-ion on the collar when the collar is 1 taken off.

With this and other objects in view, the l invention con sts of fastening member of l peculiar design, which cooperates with a second member or loop carried by the shirt, and to more fully understand the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings and the following specification, the particular features of novelty being pointed out more succinctly in the claims.

In the drawings like numerals designate the same parts in the several views, and Figure l is a fragmentary and broken away rear view showing a roll collar attached to a shirt, and also showing the rear portion of the tie held within the folds of the collar. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but with the collar disassociated from the shirt. Fig. 3 is a similar view of Fig. l with the shirt t disassociated from the collar. Fig. 4 is a! detail plan view of the collar fastener member. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the shirt I member. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the collar and shirt members in their interlocked position, and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3 with a flexible loop shown as the shirt fastening member instead of the metallic T-shaped member.

when the same is removed by the collar fastening means hereinafter described.

The body of the shirt is provided with a fastening member which may consist of an elongated shank 7 having the lateral extensions 8, being substantially T-shaped. The elongated section is passed through the button hole with the lateral extensions toward the inside of the shirt band and with the elongated extension 7 disposed at the rear of the shirt and held down at its free ends by a securing means 9.

The collar member consists of the elongated horizontal base part 10, having toward one end a short neck 11 projecting upwardly from its upper edge, the short neck 11 supporting a top portion consisting of the tongue 12 and the lateral base extensions 13 and 14-, said base extensions being in sub- I stantial alinement with said elongated base member and forming therewith the open slots 15 and 16, the angle of the top member being such that the lateral extension 14- converges toward the elongated part 10, which latter may be slightly curved upwardly, and thus forming the restricted opening 17 entering the slot 10. The lower edge of the lateral. extension lat is also provided with a lip 18 projecting within the slot 16.

In Fig. 7 the shirt member is simply shown as comprising a loop 7 of flexible material, stitched to the shirt, instead of the metallic member 7 heretofore described.

In operation the elongated part 10 of the collar member is passed through the button 1 hole of the collar with the neck 11 passing through the button hole, and with the elongated part 10 disposed on the inside face of the inner fold and the upper portion disposed on the outside face of the inner fold, or between the two folds, with the tongue portion 12 resting against the tie within the collar and with the lateral extensions also in engagement with the tie, the lip 18 projecting across the button hole and holding the whole member securely in position with the-tongue 12 resting firmly against the tie. The restricted opening 17, .between the extension 14 and the elongated part 10, also tends to hold the collar member securely in position.

When the collar is to be fastened on the shirt the elongated part 10 is simply slipped beneath the metal member 7 or loop 7 and the right hand wing of the collar is secured;

as this end is generally secured first, the col- 1 gated part of said lar will be held securely in. place, and when the collar is taken off the necktie will not fall out between the folds at the rear end.

While I have referred to the fastening means being formed of metal, it is obvious that any other suitable material might do, for instance for the collar portion, as well as the shirt portion.

Having thus described the invention what I claim is 1. A collar fastening member for a shirt collar comprising a horizontal elongated part having a short neck extending from its upper edge, said short neck supporting a tie holding member consisting of an enlarged central upwardly extending tongue, and lateral extensions at the base of said tongue and in substantial alinement with said elongated part, said short neck being located near one end of said elongated member, whereby said tie holding member is disposed eccentrically of said elongated member, substantially as described.

2. A collar fastening member comprising an elongated part provided on its upper edge with the tie holding member consisting of an upwardly directed tongue, a pair of lateral extensions extending in opposite directions from the base of said tongue substantially in alinement with the upper edge of said elongated part, a lip being provided on the lower edge of one of said lateral extensions and disposed within said slot between that extension and the elongated part, substantially as described.

3. In fastening means of the character described the combination of a vertical member secured to a shirt, a space being left between said shirt and said member, a collar fastener comprising a horizontal elongated base part having a short neck extending from the upper edge thereof towardone side and supporting a top portion consisting of 1 an upwardly directed tongue with lateral base extensions substantially in alinement with said elongated part and forming slots therewith, one of said lateral extensions being provided with a lip projecting downwardly into one of said slots, the said elonfastener being adapted to be passed through the button hole of the collar and beneath said shirt member, with said neck of said fastener extending through the button hole of the collar, the tongue portion of said fastener being disposed to the rear of a tie within said collar, and the said lip projecting across the button hole of said collar for holding said tongue firmly against said tie, whereby the fastener is held securely to the collar and the tie is held within the collar when the same is removed from the shirt, substantially as described.

4. In a fastener of the character-described the combination of a shirt member consisting of a flat vertical shank having lateral extensions at its upper end, the whole formmg a T member adapted to be secured to the shirt with an elongated shank passing through the button hole of the collar band and secured to the body of the shirt, a col lar fastener comprising a horizontal elon- .gated base part having a short neck extend ing from the upper edge thereof toward one side and supporting a top portion consisting of an upwardly directed tongue with lateral base extensions substantially in alinement with said elongated part and forming slots therewith, one of said lateral extensions being provided with a lip projecting downwardly into one of said slots, the saidelon- .gated part of said fastener being adapted to be passed through the button hole of the collar and beneath said shirt member, with said neck of said fastener extending through the button hole of the collar, the tongue portion of said fastener being disposed to the rear of a tie within said collar, and the said lip projecting across the button hole of said collar for holding said tongue firmly against said tie, whereby the fastener is held securely to the collar and the tie is held within the collar when the same is removed from the shirt, substantially as described.
