Description
NA PETERS HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH C.

GEORGE C. GRUT,` or MILWAUKE,WI scor'lsiN.
Letters Patent No.` 95,1105, dated .September 21,1869.
:Mrnovsn SPRING-Brin BOTTOM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part' of the same.
To allwhom it may concern.- l I Be it known that I, GEORGE C. Geur, of 'Milwaukee, in thecountyof Milwaukee, and in the State of 'Wisconsim have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds; and do hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
i and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. The nature ot' my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a metallic brace springmy invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to `describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form l l .a part of' this specification, and,
which represent a side View of the bed. l
A represents the bottom, an ordinary spring-bed.
l On each side, asxwell as each end, I place two metallic braces, O C, which are pivoted to the top frame B at their upper ends, and at their lower ends provided with a horizontal slot, of suitable length,` through which a screw" is inserted in the bottom frame A, thus connecting the brace to the saine.
These slots ,allowthe bracesto slide al certain distance, 4when the top frame yields to any pressure on the same.
Each brace 1s, at its lower end, provided with a rubber spring, D, or its equivalent, to raise the same and -B,.the 'top frame of up again when the pressure on the top frame is removed.
y The advantages of such metallic braces over those made of wood, are many, and I will only mention the most prominent. l prefer making the braces of cast-n iron, which is much stronger than wood, and not liable to break, bend, or get out of order. 1t is simple in its construction, being only onepiece, easily adjusted to a bed, requiring only two screws to keep it firmly in Itlwill effectually prevent lateral motion of the top frame, which is quite'essential'in the construction of a spiral-spring bed.
' It is cheaper, and does not require any straps to keep the bed from tipping, the braces holding the top frameat a given height from the bot-tom frame.
These braces may be placed on the inside edges of the frames, instead-of on the outside.
VHaving thus fully described my invention,
`What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 'lhe arrangement and combination of the Aslotted braces O, lrubber springs D, spiral springs supporting the bed, and the bed-pieces A and B, substantially as' 4and forv the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 27th day of February,
' GEO. 0. GRUT.
