To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS O. Sonormnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a screen which can be readily attached to the outside of a window frame, thereby leaving the sashes free to be moved.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face representation of a window frame with my improved screen in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on dotted line 2 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on dotted line 2, showing the construction of the upper portion of the screen. Fig. 4 is a section on dotted line 4 4 Fig. 1.
The window frame is of the usual construction and is fitted with the sash 1 and 2.
A section of screening 3 has a cleat 4 attached to its upper end, and a cleat 5 attached to its lower end. A facing strip 6 is secured to the cleat 4 holding the screen between them, and a facing strip 7 cured to the cleat 5 holding the screen between them. This facing stri 7 projects below the lower edge of the 0 eat- 5. The cleat 4 sn ports two screw hooks 8 which are locate near the ends thereof and each supports a nut 9. The cleat 5 supports two screw hooks 10 which are located near the ends thereof, and each supports a nut 11. Screw eyes 12 are turned in the heading 13, and screw eyes 14 are turned in the sub-sill 15. The headed ends of the screws 8 and 10 are inclined with respect to the shank portion thereof.
In placing the screen in connection with a window, the screw hooks 8 are placed in Specification of Letters Patent.

B turning the nuts 9 and 11, the cleats 4 antl fi are forced apart which will stretch the screen 3 against the outer casing 16. The facing strip 7 contacts with the snb-sill 15 thereby closing the opening between the cleat 5 and the sub-sill. The inclined )ortions of the hooks 8 and 10 serve to raw the cleats and screen toward the outer casing 16.
When the screen is placed in position, it will not interfere with the operation of the sash.
I claim as my invention.
The combination with a. window frame havin an upper headingv and a lower subsill, 0 upper and lower eyes carried by the heading and sub-sill, a screen, upper and lower cross bars carried by the inner side of the upper and lower ends of the screen, hooks that engage the eyes of the heading and have shanks slidably mounted in the upper cross bar, means fordrawing the shanks through said cross bar to draw it upwardly against the headin hooks 'detachably engaging the eyes of the sub-sill and having shanks slidably mounted in the lower cross bar, means or drawing said shanks through said cross bar to draw it downwardly, and a facing strip secured to the outer side of the lower cross bar and clamping the screen thereto, said strip overlapping the sub-sill.
