Description

D. J. LA DUE.
Improvement in Sash-Holders.
Patented July 16, 1872.

IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l29,038, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describinganew and Improved Sash-Fastening, invented by DANIEL JAMES LA DUE, of Carroll City, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa.
Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a window having my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 0 0, Fig. 1 and Fig. 3, a detail face view, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new arrangement of a conical-jointed screw and springjaw, to operate in connection with a sash, as hereinafter described.
A in the drawing represents the windowframe; B B, the sashes of a window. Both side edges of each sash have corrugated or roughened strips a a of metal fitted into them. In one side of the frame is inserted a small metal box, 0, which contains a pivoted jaw, D, and a spring, I). The spring connects with the lower part of the jaw, and tends to draw the roughened upper part at of the same 01f the sash. A screw, E, having a pointed end and fitted throughthe side of the frame A and box 0, enters'with its point a hole in the jaw D, as indicated in Figr3. When the screw is forced further in, so that the larger part of its conical point gradually passes through the jaw, the latter will thereby be swung against the sash to lock it at whatever height it may be desirable to hold it. When the screw is withdrawn the spring b withdraws the j aw from the sash, allowing the latter-to be raised or lowered at will. For each sash there is one such apparatus in the frame. It is preferable to have the two screws E E fitted through one plate, 0, that is secured to the face of the frame, and provided wlth female threads to receive the screws E. The upper screws E will then serve to lock or loosen the upper sash, while the lower screw applies to the lower sash. In the opposite side of the frame A is applied thereto for each sash a box, Gr, containing another spring-jaw, H, similar to D. The sprin g f, which withdraws the roughenedpart of the jaw H from the sash, crowds arounded lower part of the jaw against the sash. When by means of the screw E the sash is locked by the jaw D, it is at the same time thrown slightly over to the other side against the projecting lower part of the jaw H, and serves thereby so to swing said jaw H as to crowd its roughened upper part in contact with the sash, thus looking the latter on both sides.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sash-fastener, consisting of the springjaw D and conical-ended screw E, substantially as herein shown and described.
DANIEL JAMES LA DUE.
