SASH FASTENER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM L. GOODNOW AND JOHN W. ANDERSON, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,060, dated April 16, 1901.
Application filed August 23, 1900. Serial No. 27,859. \No model.)
To ail whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we,W1LLIAM L. GooDNow and JOHN W. ANDERs0N,citizens of theUnited States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock-Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sashlastener, of which the following is a specification.
00 r invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners of the class that have a plate attached to one sash of a window and supporting a pawl or latch which acts upon or against the other sash.
The main feature of ourimprovement consists in the formation of an angular abutment on a plate to take the thrust of a pawl and dispensing with hinges and pins used for that purpose. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l isa view of the fastener complete. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section of same. Fig.
is a top view of the pawl.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a base-plate constructed with a downward-projecting flange c at one end, adapted for hooking over the top of the lower sash of a window, and an angular upward-projecting flange or rib d at the opposite end, adapted for an abutment to take the thrust of a pawl or brace. The upward-projecting flange dis provided with a hole e, about the middle transversely of the plate, for the purpose of receiving a tongue or narrow strip f, projecting from the pawl.
B is a pawl which has its lower end resting against the flange d and stands at a suitable angle to engage one stile .of the upper sash. The pawl B has a tongue f, which consists of a narrow projecting strip formed upon the lower end and which passes through the hole of the flange cl. After the tongue is in place E it may be bent in such a manner as to prevent it from being withdrawn from the hole 6.
In operation the sashes are adjusted to the position desired, the opening not being left large enough for a person to pass through. Then the flange c of the plate A is hooked over the top of the bottom sash near one side and the pawl B allowed to rest with its free end against the stile of the top sash. Should any pressure be exerted to raise the lower sash or lower the upper one, it would force the pawl toward a horizontal position. As the pressure is increased the resistance becomes more powerful until' the limit of the strength of the parts involved is reached.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sash-fastener,consisting of a plate A bent in a downward direction at one end and in an upward direction at the opposite end, the upward bend having a hole, about the middle transversely of the plate, and a pawl B having a projecting strip inserted in the hole in the plate, substantially as specified.
