LATCH.
No. 298,839. Patented May 20, 1884.
Ill.'
MZ lme- @f STATES GEORG-E FOVLER, OF PHILMONT, NEV YORK.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 298,839, dated M ay 20, 1884.
Application filed March 15, 1884.
To. all wwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FowLEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phihnont, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Gate Latches and Catches, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to latches intended for use on doors and gates.
It consists in a latch having its point orlocking end arranged out of line with its shank, and in the combination, with said latch, of the several other parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a section of a door provided with my latch, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the latch.
rlhe door A is provided in its outer or swinging edge with a mortise, a, over which, on the edge of the door, is secured the guard-plate B. This plate is provided at about its middle portion with a slot, b, for the passage of the point of the latch, and this slot is elongated vertically to permit the movement of said latch in the operation thereof, as will be described.
The latch C is bent to form the shank c, the arm or connection c, bent from the forward end of the shank, and the point c2, carried forward from the end of the arm c parallel to, but in a different vertical plane from, the shank, as clearly shown.
In applying mylatch its rear end is pivoted to the side of the door or gate, its arm c is bent laterally into the mortise c, and the point c2 is carried thence forward through the slot in the guard-plate and into position to engage the notched plate secured on the inner side of (Ndmodel.)
the door-jamb or jamblpost, as will be understood from the dotted lines in Fig. l. By this arrangementI dispense with the loops or keepers required to support the movablel ends of latches of ordinary construction, and :also provide for the arrangement of the notched or other suitable catch-plate off the face of the door-j amb or j amb-post and on the side thereof, out of the way.
It is manifest the shank may be pivoted in various ways on the gate or door; but in manufacturing the device for use on doors it is preferred to make it with a sleeve or collar, d, on its rear ends, having formed through it an angular opening, which is slipped on the spindle D of the knob, and rigidly secured in piace by a set-screw, or in other desired manner. Gbviously my latch does not require a knob for its operation; but when used on doors I prefer to employ a knob, as shown and before described.
This latch may be made at slight cost, is easily applied, and is simple and efficient in operation, as set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
rlhe eombination,.with a door or gate provided in its swinging edge with a mortise, and the guardplate secured on said edge over said mortise, and provided with a vertical slot, of the latch having its shank pivoted at one end on the door and its other end bend laterally into the mortise, and the point or latching end projected thence through the slot in the guardplate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE FOWLER. Vitnesses:
S. A. CAMERON, Il. V. L. CAMERON.
