UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM R. VHITE, OF NEOGA, ILLINOIS.
SECURlNG DEVICE FOR GATES.
SPECIIFICAIION` forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,297, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed January 21, 1888. Serial No. 261,516. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, WILLIAM R. WHITE, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Neoga, Cumberland county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Securing Devices for Gates, of which the following is a specilication.
. My invention relates to improvements in gate-securing devices, and has for its object the provision of a device of the class named adapted to fulfill atwofold function-viz., a
lock to hold a gate-latch (when the gate is in its closed position) against movement on its pivot when in normal engagement with the catch of a locking-post, and a lock to continue the gate in such closed position When said latch is released from its catch by the upward movement of the gate.
To the above ends my invention consists in the construction of the locking device and in its combination with a gate and its latch, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar figures of reference denote similar parts.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents in elevation a portion of a longitudinally-movable gate and its locking-post, partly broken away to show the gate-latch in connection with its catch and the application of my improvement to said latch. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation sh owing the forward end of the gate raised, its latch released from the catch, and the manner of maintaining the gatein aclosed position at such time. Fig. 3 represents in elevation the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the gate partly closed and the latch thereof free from contact with my improved securing device .and swung upward by contact with its catch.
Fig. 4 is an kelevation of myimproved gate-se- -curing device detached from the gate, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of said device.
In the present embodiment of my invention I have shown a longitudinally-movable gate, 1, of the usual construction, provided with a pivoted upwardly-swinging latch, 2, the forwardly-projecting end 3 of which is provided with a notch, 4, to engage a catch, 5, secured to the locking-post, to hold the gate in a closed position. A stop, 7, secured to the forward vertical rail, 8, of the gate, serves to limit the downward movement of the latch. To the rail 8, above the latch, is pivoted a latch-securing device comprising a straight body, 9, having at one end an aperture to receive a pivotal pin and at the other end laterallypro jecting curved arms 11 and 12, the forward arm, 11, being somewhat shorter than the arm 12 and adapted (when the gate is raised at its forward end) to engage a stop, 10, upon the post 6 above the catch 5, (see Fig. 2,) for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
The arm 12 of the securing device serves as a handle wherewith to swing said device rearwardly to remove it from contact with the latch when the latter is to be raised, as shownv in Fig. 3.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that the lower end of the securing device rests upon the latch when the latter is in its normal position, and that the latch cannot therefore be raised until said device is swung rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3, either by contact with the stop 10 When the gate is being closed, or by hand, as above stated.
In the act of closing the gate the arm 11 of the securing device and the inclined forward end of the latch 2 will be simultaneously brought into contact with the stop 10 and catch 5, respectively, whereby the former will be swung backward and the latter raised. (See Fig. 3.) Further movement of the gate will bring the notch 4 of the latch into engagement With the catch 5, at which time the arm 11 of the securing device will pass below the stop 10, and the lower end of said device will engage the upper edge of the latch, (see Fig. 1,) and thus serve to hold said latch against accidental displacement. Should the forward end of the gate thus latched be raised by stock, as is sometimes the case, such action would, while releasing the notch 4 from engagement with the catch 5, also bring the arm 11 into engagement With the stop 13, (see Fig. 2,) thereby maintaining the gate in its closed position. 'Io raise the latch, the securing device is swung rearwardly, as hereinbefore stated.
Modifications in detail of construction may be made in the within-described invention without departing from the spirit or sacriflc ing the advantages thereof. I therefore claim ICO the right to make any and all snch changes and alterations therein as shall properly fall within the scope and limit of said invention.
I claiml. The combination, with a gate-latch, of a securing device pivoted to the gate, comprising a body arranged to contact with said latch to prevent movement thereol` and provided with laterally-projecting arms at the end contacting with the latch', substantially as described.
2. 'lhe combination, with a gate-post having` a transverse stop and a gate moving longitudinally to and from the said post, ol' a securing device consisting of a pivoted pendent body and an arm bent upward to engage said stop, substantially as described.
Thecoinbination, withagate, itslockingpost, and a stop secured to said post, of agate latch and a securing device pivoted to said gate and provided with projecting carved arms, one of which is adapted to engage said stop when the gate is raised, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a gate, its latch, a locking-post having a catch to engage said 'l latch, and a stop above said catch, of a securing device pivoted to said gate and arranged to contact with said latch and provided with alaterally-projecting curved arm to engage the stop when the latch is released from its catch by the upward movement of the gate, substantially as described.
5. In a gate, a securing device pivoted to said gate and comprising a body having laterally-projccting curved arms,in combination with a gate-latch and a locking-post having a catch to engage said latch, and a stop to enh gage said securing device, substantially as described.
G. A gate, a latch pivotcd thereto, and a securing device pivoted t said gate above said latch to hold said latch stationary and provided with laterally -projcctng unequallycurved arms, in combination with a locking post, a catch thereon to engage said latch, and
a stop above said catch to engage' one arm ol' said securing device when the gate is raised, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two snbseribing` witnesses.
WM. It. 7WHITE.
