G. S. SMITH.
- BOLT.
No. 437,054. Patented Sept. 2.3, 1890.
- gvwowtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILES s. SMITH, or BALLWIN, MISSOURI.
BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,054, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed a, 17, 1890. Serial No. 352,207. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILES S. SMITH, of Ballwin, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Doors or Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a novel and simplified construction in a device for securing doors and gates; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my complete invention as appliedto more fully show the arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 00a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the doors partly broken away, the center lock and latch used in connection therewith applied thereto. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the upper keeper used in connection with the upper vertical bolt, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the lower keeper.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 represents two hinged doors having my invention ap plied thereto in a locked position. 1
2 represents a vertical bolt secured to the upper part of one of the doors 1 and provided with a handle 5, formed integral therewith.
3 represents a second vertical bolt secured to the lower part of the same door to which bolt 2 is carried and provided with a handle formed therewith in like manner in reference to bolt 2.
The bolts 2 and 3 are securely fastened to the door by means of clips or staples at, by which means the said bolts are allowed to turn, and, further, to be raised or lowered, as may be desired.
7 represents a keeper having two arms (1 d, the ends of which are bent to form circles e, within which space screws or bolts 8 are inserted and fastened to the door, securing said keeper firmly in position.
When the bolt 2 is in a locked position, as shown in Fig. 1, the handle 5 will rest upon the upper arm (1 of the keeper 7, and when unlocked the said bolt will rest upon the lower arm of the said keeper.
9 represents the lower keeper used in connection with the vertical bolt 3. This keeper consists of a right-angle piece of metal, the
horizontal leaf a of which forms a stop andprevents the bolt 3 from being dislocated when in an unlocked position.
10 represents a continuation of the angular keeper 9, having an arm b, which is parallel with the leaf a, and acts to hold the bolt in an elevated position when withdrawn, and also holds the said bolt in a locked position when the handle 6 is turned, as shown in Fig. 1.
12 represents a horizontal bolt fastened to the opposite door 1 by means of clips 13, which bolt passes in a hole 16 in the edge of the opposite door when in alocked position.
The horizontal bolt 12 is sufficiently bent, as shown at 1 1, to form a hand-hold on the inside of the door, and is then bent at right angle with the handle 14 and passed through a slot 15, formed in the door, the end of which bolt terminates in a second handle 17 on the opposite side of the door. By this means the bolt 12 can be operated from either side of the door and the door carrying the said bolt opened and used independent of the opposite door.
To the outside of the door carrying the horizontal bolt 12 is secured a latch 18, fastened thereto by means of a bolt f, which latch has a projecting arm 0 extending in direction with the bolt, and which rests upon that portion of the bolt extending through the slot 15 and holds the said bolt in a locked position, as best shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this invention is particularly applicable to outbuildings where single and double doors are used, dispensing with the usual pole or post so commonly used for such purposes. It is further to be noted that the door carrying the horizontal bolt can be opened independent of the other door and from either side thereof, which is very desirable and convenient, as it is not necessary always to open both doors.
This invention can also be used successfully as a gate-lock by dispensing with the upper vertical bolt.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. A bolt for securing doors or gates, consisting of a horizontal bolt 12, having handles 14 and 17 formed integral therewith, the handle portion of which bolt passes through aslot formed in the door and adapted to be operated from either side of the door, substantially as described.
2. In a device for securing doors or gates, the horizontal bolt 12, the handle portion of which passes through the slot 15 in the door and is provided with the handles 14 and 17, in combination with the latch 18 for retaining the said bolt in a locked position, substantially as described.
3. In a device for securing doors or gates,
the keeper 7, having two arms (I (I, the ends of which are bent to receive the screws 8, in combination with the vertical bolt 2, substantially as described.
4. In a device for securing doors or gates, the keeper 9, having the horizontal leaf a, and the lower extension 10, having an arm I), in combination with the vertical bolt 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GILES S. SMITH.
