IWIIGHAEL KELTER AND lPETER LEICKEM, OF MOHENRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,018, dated March 5, 1878; application filed December 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MICHAEL KELTER and PETER LEICKEM, of McHenry, in the county of McHenry, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a farm-gate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of our gate. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, showing the outer end of the gate elevated. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of parts thereof.
A represents the gate. B is the post to which the gate is hinged, and C is the post to which it latches. The gate is hung to the post B by means of iron bands and screw-eyes in the following manner: The upper hanging D clasps the upper board of the gate at an angle, and has a downwardly-projecting pin, a, which is inserted in a screw-eye, b, fastened in the post. By the band D clasping the board at an angle, the more weight comes upon it the tighter it clasps the board, and secures itself without the assistance of bolts or screws, or anything else outside itself, thereby making in itself an independent hanging.
The lower band or hanging D clasps a slide, G, and has also a pin, a., to be inserted in a screw-eye, b. This band D has an inner lip or tongue, d, which is let into a corresponding notch in the slide G and drawn ti Oht by means of a key, e, driven above, and securely fastening it independently without nails or bolts. The pressure being backward on this hanging makes it strong iu its position.
The slide G is made somewhat in wedge form, the upper side being horizontal and the lower side inclined, and fits in a corresponding slot made in the lower board of the gate, and it passes in between the upright cleats at the inner end of the gate. The slide has also, near its inner end, a slot, n, with key m therein. By the use of this slide and the slot and key in the same the gate may be adjusted, and any sagging taken up which may occur. This is done by means of a wider or additional key. Besides, it allows the outer end of the gate to be elevated for the passage of smaller stock, while larger stock cannot pass.
The latch of this gate consists of an arm, I, fastened in and projecting from the post C. To one side of this arm, at the outer end, is pivoted a plate, 7L, the inner end of which is capable of rising and falling, its movement being limited by a pin, y, passing through a slot, a', inthe plate.
In closing the gate the arm I passes through a slot in one of the boards of the gate at the outer end, and the plate 7L drops down, thus locking the gate against animals. At the same time the arm I takes upon itself a portion of the weight of the gate olf from the post to which it is hung.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
