PARTING-STRIP FOR- WINIDGWS.

Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec. 29, 191 1.
Application filed March 8, 1913. Serial No. 753,016.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER E. KILMER,
citizen of the United States of America, residing at 7408 Cedar avenue, Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parting-Strips for Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in window construction, more particularly to improvement in parting strips which separate the sashes.
The invention especially relates to that kind of window construction in which the sashes swing vertically and then are removable from the window frames. In such construction, in order that the upper sash may be withdrawn from the window frame, the lower portion of the parting strips must first be taken out and then be replaced after the upper sash is put back into the frame.
The invention, therefore, consists in a parting strip of the construction hereinafter,
pointed out.
In the annexed drawings: Figure 1 represents a vertical section through a window frame showing the construction to which the invention is applied. Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the invention and its application to the window frame. Fig. 3, a perspective view of the feature of the invention.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 designates a window frame having the upper and lower sashes 2 and 3 and the parting strips 1 which are between the sashes. The parting strip 1 is made in three pieces, top and bottom portions 5 and 6, which are rigidly secured in the window frame in the usual location and in the usual way and a middle removable portion 7 This portion 7 has the flat top 8 where it meets the flat bottom 9 of the top portion 5. The top 10 of the bottom portion 6 is out 01f backwardly so that with the window frame this bottom portion forms a recess 11 back of the top 10 of the bottom portion. The top 10 has the horizontal portion 12 in front and the slanting rearwardly downwardly in-- clined portion 13. The middle portion 7 of the parting strip 1 has its bottom end 11 made with the horizontal portion 15 corresponding with the horizontal portion 12 of the bottom portion 6 of the parting strip 1 and the slanting portion 16 to correspond with the portion 13. This middle portion 7 is put into place as shown in Fig. 2. The slanting portion 16 is placed into the recess 11 against the portion 13 of the top 10 and the portion 15 resting on the portion 12 of the top 10, the end 8 fitting under the end 9 of the top portion 5 of the parting strip 4. In this position the parting strip is in place to separate the sashes. The check rail 17 at the bottom of the top sash 2 holds the top of portion 7 in place and the engagement of the bottom of the portion 7 in the recess holds the bottom of the portion 7 in place while the sash is in the frame, as the portion 7 extends above that part of the frame where the check rail 17 is when the upper sash is in its topmost position.
WVhen it is desired to remove the sashes, the lower sash 3 is turned down, as shown in Fig. l, the upper sash 2 is then loweredj This brings the check rail 17 below the bottom end 14: of the portion 7 of the check rail,
and this portion 7 may then be readily removed and the sash 2 withdrawn from the frame. I am made aware that there have been parting strips made in several pieces with their meeting edges slanting and I make no claim thereto. But so far as I am aware there has not been devised previously a parting strip in which there is a separable piece having one end resting in a recess in the window frame and held in place without any auxiliary fastening. I am further made aware that there has been patended a window frame having a removable part, the ends of which fit into recesses in the window frame. But into this removable part the lower window sash fits and they are removable together, the recesses opening outwardly so that the ends of the removable part of the window frame is pulled outwardly from the rest of the frame.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A window parting strip consisting of bottom and middle portions, the first two adapted to be secured in awindow frame and the middle portion adapted to be removed from the window frame, the bottom end of the middle portion fitting behind the top end of the bottom portion, the middle portion and the bottom portion together having a length greater than the distance between the bottom of the top sash and the bottom of the window frame, when the 110 top sash is at the top of the frame, whereby the lower part of the top sash will hold the middle portion of the parting strip in place.
2. A window parting strip, consisting of top, bottom and middle portions, the top and bottom portions adapted to be secured in a window frame and, the middle portion held loosely in and adapted to be removed from the window frame, the bottom portion having a top made with a horizontal portion in front and a rearwardly downwardly inclined portion; the middle portion having its bottom end made with a horizontal portioncorresponding with the horizontal portion of the top of the bottom portion of the strip anda slanting portion corresponding with the inclined portion of the top of the bottom portion of the strip, the bottom end of the middle portion of the strip fitting upon and behind the top of the bottom portion of the strip, the middle and the bottom portions of the strip having a length greater than the distance between the bottomof the top sash and the bottom of the Window frame when the top sash is at the top of the window frame, whereby the lower part of the top sash will hold the middle portion of the parting strip in place. a
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses. T
