MATCH-SAFE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Joosr DE BRUIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in match safes and the primary object of the same is to provide an improved device of this character into which the original package containing the matches is adapted to be placed, and improved means whereby the matches at the front of the safe may be separated or spaced to form a pocket or recess in the supply of matches whereby the user may readily remove the matches by inserting a finger into the pocket or recess to grip the matches.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character including a tray for receiving the matches and whlch tray is located entirely within the plane formed by the faces of the same.

A further object is to provide an improved form of blank which may be folded and secured together without the use of solder or separate fastening devices.

A still further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, durable and cheap in construction and effective and eflicient in operation.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, illustrating an embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an improved form of blank from which the match safe is constructed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 3.

Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of the invention, the blank designated generally by the reference numeral 10 in Fig. 1 is adapted to be folded upon the lines 11, 12 and 13, to form the back and front sections 14, 15,

- and the sides 16, 17. Projecting beyond the outer edges of the back 14 and the side 17 are flanges 18, 19, which are adapted to be Specification of Letters Patent.

folded upon each other or interlocked. as shown in Fig. 4, when the blank is folded to form a rectangle, for securing the blank in its folded shape. The portions of the blank forming the side members 16 and 17 terminate short of the respective lower edges 20, 21, of the back and front sections and projecting below the lower edges 22, 23, of the side sections 16, 17 and preferably at points intermediate the edges of said sections are ears or extensions 24, respectively. The front section 15 is cut away as at 26 at points where the lower edges 22, 23, of the side sections 16, 17, join the side edges of the back section to form rounded portions 27 on the side sections for a purpose to be set forth. The front section 15 is also cut away as at 28 within its edges to form an elongated slot, which slot extends below the lower edges 22, 23, of the sides 16, and 17, when the blank is fiat. The front section 15 is also provided with slots 29 extending from the sides of the slot 28 at points intermediate the ends of the slot and some distance above the lower edges 22, 23 of the side sections 16, 17. These slots terminate,

at the folding lines 12 and 13 of the side sections, and if desired, the extremities of the slots 29 may be enlarged as at 30 at the points where they join the slot 28. The section 15 of the blank is also cut as at 31 on the folding lines 12, 13, and extend from the slots 29 for a short distance above the slots to form projections or fingers 32, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. With the blank thus formed it may be folded upon the lines 11, 12, 13 and secured by the flaps or flanges 18 and 19 in the manner already set forth, and the back and front sections 14, 15, may be folded on the transverse lines 33, 34, which latter are preferably coincident with the lower edges 22, 23, of the side sections 16, 17, and the portion 35 of the side edges of the section 15 above the line of fold 34 is adapted to rest against and conform to the shape of the rounded portions 27 of the side sections 16, 17. The portions of the front and back sections below the edges 22 and 23 of the side sections -16, 17, are each of a width to form one-half of the bottom of the safe, and when folded the edges 20, 21, thereof will rest against each other at substantially the diametric center of the case. The bottom thus formed is held in position by means of the ears or extensions 24, 25, which are deflected or livered from the original package 86, which latter is adapted to be inserted into the safe after removing the cover from the package.

With a safe thus constructed the matches below the extremities of the projections or fingers 32 will fill the tray formed at the bottom of the safe and the projections or lingers 32 will deflect the matches toward the rear of the safe as they descend in the package toward the base of the safe so that the matches will form a pocket or recess 37 below the projections or fingers 32 and opening toward the front of the safe and through the slots in the member 15.

If desired, one of the walls of the safe, preferably side wall 17, may be provided with a roughened or corrugated portion 38v to serve as a match scratcher and which por tion may be formed at the same time that, the blank is being formed.

With this improved construction, it will be apparent that the safe may be construct ed of a single piece of material adapted to,

be bent into shape and when so shaped the, various 'folds or bends may be secured into. position without the use of solder or other separate fastening devices.

In order that the invention might be. fully understood the details of an embodiment thereof have been thus specifically de scribed, but

What I claim as new is,

1. As an article of. manufacture, a blank; for a match safe comprising a front and; back and sideportionasaid front and back portions extendin r beyond one edge of the side portions, saic front portion bein provided with an elongated slot within its edges and extending into the extended portion of the front beyond the edges 'of the side sections, said front being also provided with slots extending transversely with respect to the elongated slot from points intermediate the ends of the slot toward the lines. of fold of the portions adjoining the front portion, said, front portion being also provided with slots extending parallel with the elongated slot from and. communicating with the transverse slots, and flaps-on the 7 side portions for supporting the bottom formed by the extensions on the front and back portions.

2'. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a match safe comprising a front and back and side portions, fastening flaps on the outer edges of the outermost portions,

said front and back portions being spaced from each other and extending beyond one edge of the side portions, said front portion being provided with an elongated slot within its edges, extending into the extending portion and beyond the edges of the side portions, said front being also providedwith slots extending transversely with respect to the elongated slot from points intermediate the ends of the slots and on each side thereof, said front portion being also provided with slots extending parallel with the elongated slot from and connnunicating with the transverse slots to form spaced support" ing fingers for the matches, and projections extending from the side portions for supporting the bottom formed bythe extensions on the front and back portions.

3. As an article of manufacture, a blank for a match safe comprising a front and back and side portions, fastening flaps on the outer edges of the outermost portions, said front and back portions being spaced from each other and extending beyond one edge of the side portions, said front portion being provided with an elongated slot within its edges, extending into the extended portion and beyond the edges of the side portions, said front, being also provided with slots extending transversely with respect to the elongated slot from points intermediate the ends of the slots and on each side thereof, said front portion being also 1 provided with slots extending parallel with the elongated slot from and communicating with the transverse slots to form spaced supporting fingers for the matches, and means on the side portions for supporting the extensions on the front and back portions to form an upwardly opening tray having an upwardly'opening slot registering with the space between the said supporting fingers and extending into the bottom of the tray.

A match safe constructed of a single piece of material bent into shape to form front and back and side walls, means for securing the free edges of the blank together, two of said walls diametrically opposi'te each other being provided with portions extending below the lower edges of the other walls, said extensions being bent toward each other to form a bottom for the safe, and means on the said other walls for supporting and holding the bottom sections in position, one of the walls of the case being provided with} a slot. extending? transversely of'the wall above thesaid bottom, a portion of the wall above the. slot being cut away to" form spaced projectiQns adapted; to be deflected inwardly; toward the opposite wall of h Case, for supporting the matches and to form an opening through the wall ofthe pace bet-ween:

5. A match safe constructed of a single piece of material bent into shape to form front and back and side walls, means for securing the free edges of the blank together, two of said walls diametrically opposite each other being provided with portions extending below the lower edges of the walls of the case being provided with a slot extending transversely of the wall above the said bottom, a portion of the wall above the slotbeing cut away to form spaced projections adapted to be deflected inwardly toward the opposite wall of the case for sup porting the matches and to form an opening through the wall of the case communicating with the space between the said projections.

6. A match safe constructed of a single 1 piece of material bent into shape to form front and back and side walls, means for securing the free edges of the blank together, two of said walls diametrically opposite each other being provided with portions extending below the lower edges of the i other walls, said extensions being bent toward each other to form a bottom for the safe, and means on the said other walls for supporting and holding the bottom sections in position, one of the walls of the case being provided with a slot extending transversely of the wall above the said bottom, a portion of the wall above the slot being cut away to form spaced projections adapted to be deflected inwardly toward the opposite wall of the case for supporting the matches and to form an opening through the wall of the case communicating with the space between the said projections, said walls being provided with an upwardly opening slot below the transverse slot registering with the space between the said deflected portions.
