UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IE. BEATTY, OF MORTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
' rooxnr MATCH-SAFE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morton, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Match- Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pocket match safes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of match safe, which will deliver a single match at a time, and which is so constructed that it will prevent any possibility of the escape of the matches until desired.
A further object is to provide an improved match safe with spring-pressed push buttons in the opposite ends thereof, one of said push buttons controlling a gate across a match outlet, and the other controlling an ejector, to eject a single match through said match outlet.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations, and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a view in section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
1 represents the body of a match safe, in which partitions 2 are secured, and are spaced just the proper distance apart to accommodate matches of ordinary length, and the bottom of this compartment between the partitions 2 is provided with a central chamber 3, which is of such a size to accommodate a single match.
Between a partition 2, and one end of the casing, a partition 4: is provided, forming a compartment between said partition 4: and the partition 2, for the accommodation of an L-shaped ejector 5, one member of which lies in the same horizontal plane as does the chamber 3, and registers with an opening in the partition 2, so that when said ejector 5 is projected inwardly, it will engage the end of the match in the chamber 3 and eject the same. A rod 6, is secured to said ejector 5, and projects through a recessed end 7 of the casing 1, and is provided at its end with a push button 8, and a coiled spring 9 is located in the recess 7 and bears outwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

against the push button 8, to normally hold the button and the ejector 5 in inoperative position. The other end of the casing which is spaced from the partition 2, comprises a compartment 10 in which the operating mechanism for a gate 11 is accommodated. This gate 11 normally closes an exit or outlet passage 12, in line with the chamber 3, so that the match in said chamber cannot escape until the gate 11 is moved out of the way. t
The gate 11 is connected by a rod 13 with a block 14:, and the latter is secured to the partition by means of a spring hinge 15, so that when said block is swung on its hinge, the gate 11 will be drawn out of the exit passage 12, and permit a match to escape. To operate this block 141, I provide a cam block 16, which is made with a beveled face to engage the similarly beveled end of the block 14, and is connected by a rod 17 with a push button 18, the latter projecting out beyond the end of the casing 1, and a coiled spring 19 is located in the recessed end 20 of said casing, and bears outward against the button 18 to hold the parts in normal position.
A gate or door 21 is provided in one edge of the match safe, through which the matches may be supplied to the safe, and this door or gate 21, is connected by a hinge 22, and a spring 23 secured to one of the partitions 2, is in line with a lug 2 1 on the hinge 22, so as to normally hold the gate 21 and return it to closed osition when open.
In opera-tlon, when it is desired to eject a match from the safe, the operator places his thumb against either the button 18 or the button 8, and his forefinger against the other of said buttons, and forces them both inwardly. When he does this, the block 16 will swing the block 1 1 on its hinge 15 and draw the gate 11 out of the passage 12, and the button 8 will move the ejector 5 inwardly, to project a match through the exit passage 12 sufficiently far to enable it to be grasped and pulled out of the match safe.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my mvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a match compartment having a match chamber at one edge thereof, of an area suflicient to accommodate but a single match, a gate normally closing the exit of said chamber, an ejector registering with an end of said chamber, a block, a spring hinge supporting said block, a rod connecting said block and gate, normally holding the gate in closed position by the action of said spring hinge, and push buttons controlling the operation of said block and said ejector.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a match receptacle having a match chamber communicating therewith, and of an area sufficient to receive but a single match, a gate normally closing the exit from said chamber, an ejector registering with one end 01" said chamber, an outwardly spring-pressed button in one end of the device connected to said ejector, an outwardly spring-pressed button in the other end of said device, a block, a spring hinge connecting said block to the match receptacle, a rod connecting said block with the gate, and a cam block connected with the last mentioned push button and in cam engagement with said first mentioned block, so that when said cam block is projected inwardly by means of its push button, the first mentioned block will be moved on its hinge to open said gate.
3. A match safe, comprising a receptacle, three partitions in said receptacle dividing it into a match compartment and an ejector compartment, a match receiving chamber communicating with said match compartment, and of an area to accommodate but a single match, an ejector in said ejector compartment registering through an opening in one of said partitions with the end of said match chamber, and a spring pressed push button in one end of the receptacle for projecting the ejector inwardly to eject but a single match from said chamber.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOHN F. BEATTY.
