JoHND. BYER, or BUTTE, MONTANA.
` `MATcH-nnsrEiwsEE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNVD. BYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte,
county of Silverbow, and State of Montana,
have invented certain new and useful 11n-- y provements in Match-Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the provi..
sion of a match dispenser which will be an improvement on the match'dispenser set forth in `my Patent No. 1199244, datedSeptember 26, 1916. u f
VA further object is to provide a dispensing device for matches, tooth picks or similar articles having a cup or receptacle and hinged match or tooth pick holding top sections adapted to grasp the match or tooth pick and hold itin convenient position for removal bythe user. In that respect, the invention is an improvement on'the ytop sections of my aforesaid patent as the article is retained, rather than delivered, when elevated by the slide; furthermore, the construction is simplilied and rendered cheaper to manufacture, more; reliable in operation, i
and the match or tooth pick is held in more accessible position. l Another object of the invention is the pro-` vision of. an operating lever,y a dispensing 20f slide, and an improved operative connection between the lever and the slide whereby the action is positive and regular and there is little :likelihood of parts getting out 'of order. This part of the invention is greatly tween the leverand the slide of the device simplified over the operating connections beofmy patent aforesaid.
Avfurther object is to generally improve, simplify, and cheapen the construction of a match or tooth pick dispenser and to render it reliable in action even when operatedy improperly or at anexcessive speed.
The embodiment of the invention hereinafter set forth is to be considered as illustrak tive, rather than restrictive, of the scope thereof, as certain modications'may beresorted to without departing from the principles of the improvements embodied therein. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevation, a part of the casing being removed to show the dispensing' slide and the operating connection;
Fig. 2 a vertical section on line 2-2 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view like Fig. 1, but showing the lever depressed andthe dispensing slide raised to deliver a match or tooth pick; and

circular heads 5 constituting the endsof the Y match or tooth pick, cup `or receptacle 6.`
Removal plates ,7 connect below the heads 5. The cup or receptacle is the end pieces v3 p Patented'Dec. 31, 1918. Application led March 21, 1917. Serial No. 156,329.
70 of general 'cylindrical form, thelower part comprising arc- 7 shaped sections 8 having inspectionslots 9, thek parts 8 being connectedto the ends 5. The slots 9 permit inspection of the articles, such asmatches or tooth picks 10,7contained within the cup-or receptacle 6 so that the supply maybe replenished, when necessary. Furthermore, any implement may be kinserted inthe slots 9 to readjust-the articles 10 should they become-crossed or clogged.
The upper portion of the receptacle 6 is substantially covered by arc-.shaped topsections 11 which are substantial duplicates. Each section v11 is hinged at-12 `to the heads 5 in A rod vor pin 14 may extend lengthwise through the lower portion of the section 11,
in each instance, for this purpose, the ends being loosely received at 12 in theheads 5.A
1.1 coil spring l5 surrounds the central portion of the rod 14 and has `its ends 16, 17,
11 closed. To limit the extent of closing of the lsections 11, there are providedthereon ylugsrlS which enter ynotches 19 in theedges of the heads 5, but normally the lugs 18 do Vnot'bear on the bottoms of the notches 19# and, consequently, the jaws 29 which are provided on the sections 11, bear Vagainst each other. The jaws 20 are provided withV substantial alinementwith its lower edge 13.
one or more grooves or serrations 21 on their f inner faces to enable them to frictionally hold one or more matchesy or tooth picks. The jaws 20 are spaced a suitable distance apart as shown inFigs. 1 and 3 and'between them there is a -large space 22 comprising cutout portions in the upper edges of the sectionsll of suiiicient size to enable the user to Yinsert the thumb and forenger on opposite nsides of the match or tooth pick to opening 22, the spaces 30being. in line withV thev jaws so that those 'portionsof'the tooth lpick or match bridging the spaces 30 easilygrasp the same.' Other cutoutpor-V tions 23 are provided to allow thedispens ing'slide to vbe elevated to the height vnecesf sary to deliver the match or tooth pick shown at 24,Fig.4, to the j aws 20.
The dispensingfslide 25 operates-within the casing comprising the Vends 3 and the plates 7 and has its edgesslidable in groove 26 on the innerf faces ofthe Vsaid ends and hea'ds. The slide is provided withV a'pluralityfof projections 27 on its upper edge,
alll of'whichhave a groove: 28 of a size suit- I able to receive asingle match or tooth pick.
Preferably there are three ofl the projections 27 ,theendfscctions beingradapted to pass into the openingsV 23 when the slide isele Vated. Vand fthe center one passing into' Vthe are lfreel i'cr' presentation v'to the jaws 20.
Consequently, the match or tooth pickf24y is offered Ato thejaws and theyl immediately graspit as shown in Fig, 1.5 v
:Theoperating .lever 31 Yis Vpivotediat y to one 'of the plates' 7 and is retracted by a spring 33 coiled around said pivot Vand covoperating with thej lever'at 341 and with an end piece 3 VVat 35d. In the lower portion of the' slide there isja V'slotj36 whichvhas a i straight lower edge 37, ajcarn edge 33 and a dwell 39. AV pinflOfon the lever 31, projectsmto the-.slot 36. Thedirectoperatingconnectionithus provided between the vlever andthe shde, fis positivefin its actionand practically impossible 'fof getting out of. op-
erative condition.- Whenthe slideis in its y raised position and when itis in'its lowered position, the pin lies in the dwell 39, and
-Consequently there is nolost-fmotion at. those times nor any possibility offurther upwardl orrdownward' movement. The cam 38, however, provides forthe elevation of the slide when the lever is depressed and the size of thefspace 36 enables the yslideto'beY drawn downwardly by 'a snap like' action 'when the lever is released, this being dueto the' "gravity of the Vslide and/'the action of-Y'the Copies ofthis patent may-be 'obtained spring '33..
x ,Y f 'f signature. V,T he leverr31 has its handle portion,oper- V Y I a` slot in one of the kend pieces 3 and provided with a stop 41 which is adapt- Ved toY bear against the side piece 3 to arrest theretraction ofthelever and the slide, Y as shown in Fig. 1, l
I am aware that it is unnecessary to forni the sections 11 of arc shape and to employ theeXact arrangement of the projections 27 furthermore, that there-are other details of construction which mightbe modied with-k out departing from the principles Vof the inv vention. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by' Letters Patent is Q Y* i A 1. `In `a dispenser for inatches'or the like, the combination with Yafreceptacle vwhose top has a movable, automatically closingv section,
