Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented June 3, 1919 Application filed May 13, 1918. Serial No. 234,058.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS WAX, a citizen of Russia, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled Dispensing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
()ne object of my invention is to provide a machine of simple construction which can be operated only by the insertion of the proper coin to dispense articles of various characters, such for example as spheres or balls of chewing gum.
'Another object is to so construct the machine of my inventionthat it can be made comparatively small and so that it can be secured to the seats in theaters or other places, or it may be made oflarge size and secured to a wall or standard.
A further object is to so make my improved machine that the inner parts thereof can be easily reached for repair purposes, for removing the coins, and also for replen-- ishing the material to be dispensed.
Another object of my invention is to pro-v vide means of simple and durable construction which will effectively prevent the ma,- nipulation of the dispensing parts to secure any of the material unless the proper coin, in payment for the material, is first inserted within the machine.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- 1 Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention,

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a selective detent latch which forms a part of my invention, and
Fig. 9 is a top plan view showing a blank made of sheet metal which can be stamped into the shape illustrated and then bent to form the detent latch shown in Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents a main casing which includes two sides 11 and 12, a back 13, and a bottom 14:. A cover section 15' includes a plate 16 for covering the open front of the casing 10 and an angularly disposed portion 17 for closing the top of said casing.
A tray 18 is mounted within the casing 10 and has a hole 19 therethrough which is formed by tapered sides 20. A glass 21 extends upwardly from the tray 18 adjacent the inner surface of the cover plate 16 and thus a magazine 22 is formed between the glass 21 and the sides and back of the casing, the bottom of the magazine being formed by the tray 18. The cover plate 16 has slots 23 so that the material contained within the magazine is visible through these openings through the medium of the glass 21.
The bottom of the tray 18 is flat and a partition 24 is secured within the casing and spaced below the bottom of the tray 18. The upper surface of the partition 2a is flat and extends parallel with the bottom surface of the tray. A block 25 slidably fits within the space between the tray 18 and the top of the partition 24. This block has a hole 26 extending therein and a push rod or handle 27 is secured to the outer end of the block and projected through an opening in the side of the casing 10.
In operation the block 25 can be moved inwardly by pushing the handle 27 until the hole 26 is directly below the hole 19 in the tray 18. When in this position oneof the articles, which in the present instance are illustrated in the form ofballs or spheres of chewing gum, will fall into the hole 26. After this action an outward movement of the block 25 will move the hole 26, with the article" therein, opposite a passageway 28. The passageway 28 is provided in the casing by the means of'a plate 29 locked to the rear of the inner surface of the front of the easing. This plate 29 is curved at its bottom and extendsv out of.the casing through an opening 31 in the casing to provide acup 30 for receiving the dispensing chewing gumor other material. This outwardmovement of the block is eifected by an expansion spring 32 which is located between one side of the casing 10 and the end of-the block 25.
The lower surface of the block 25 is recessed at 33 and this recess has its inner wall curved as shown at 34. When the block 25 is in its normal position, such for example as shownin Fig. 2, the recess 33 is in register with a coin slot 35 in the cover plate 16 so that a coin 36 can be inserted throughsaid slot and will snugly fit within the recess as shown in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 5 and in full lines in Fig. 7.
The partition 24 has its upper surface recessed as shown at 37. A selective detent latch 38 has cars 39 which are bent outwardly from the body portion 40 thereof and these ears are pivotally connect-.
edy-to a plate 41 which is secured to the bottom of the recess 37. The detent latch has an upwardly curved lip 42 and a coiled spring 43 is mounted within the recess and adapted to move the lip 42 upwardly.
The portion 24 has a hole 44 directly to the rear of the recess 37 to permit the coins, in a manner hereinafter described, to fall from the recess into the bottom of the casing. When the parts are in their normal positions the lip 42 willbe pressed by the spring 43 against the under surface 45 of the portion of the block which is immediately to the rear of the recess 33, such posi tion being shown in Figs. 2 and5. If it were attempted to push the handle 27 in wardly without the insertion of the proper coin through the slot 35, the lip-.42 of the detent latch 38 would be moved upwardly by the spring 43 into the recess 33 and the side wall of the recess would abut against the lip 42 and prevent the block 25 from being pushed inwardly to such extent as to cause the holes 19 and 26 to register.
However, if when the elements are in their normal position a proper coin 36 is inserted through the slot 35, the coin, which is of a thickness equal to the depth of the recess 33, will prevent the lip 42 from moving upwardly. Thus the holes 26 and 19 can be brought into register to permit one of the balls within the magazine to drop into the hole 26 and upon the retractive or outward movement of the block 25 by the spring 32, the ball within the hole 26 will drop through the passageway 28 into the cup 30 from where it can be easily removed.
The cover plate 16 is secured to the casing 10 by a locking device including a lug 46 on the cover plate 16, and a pivoted bar 47 is adapted to be moved b a key through a slot 48 in the bottom of t e casing. The-bar 47 is adapted to be moved into and out of a notch 49 in the lug 46.
While T have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of theappended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
A container for a vending apparatus including a main casing having a tray and a partition therein spaced apart and between which a dispensingmember can slide, said casing having an opening at one side in line with the space between said tray and partition through which aportion of said dispensing membercan project to the outside of said casing, said casing having a cover section removably secured there to andladaptedto cover the front of said casing and the space between said tray and partition; and a'transparent member projecting upwardly from said tray and spaced forward of the back of the casing to provide a magazine, said cover section serving also to cover said transparent member and having openings therein whereby the interior of said magazine can be seen when the cover section is in place, .said casing having a cup extending outwardly from its side and communicating with the space between said partition and tray, said tray havin a hole therein through which material irom the magazine can drop into engagement with said dispensing member whereby the .dispensing member can move the material to permit it to fall into said cup, said front section of the casing havin a hole therein through which a coin can o inserted at a level above said partition, whereby the coin can be moved by said dispensing member, said partition having a hole through which said coin can drop to the bottom of said casing when moved into alinement with said latter hole by the dispensing member; substantially as described.
