CHARLES HENRY BINGHAM, OF UTRECHT, HOLLAND.
VENDI'NG APPAR/-wus FOR CIGARS,CIGARETTES, aoc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 368,869, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed April 9. 1887. Serial No. 234.265. (No model.) Patented in England February 28, 1887, No. 3,078.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, CHARLES HENRY BING HAM, of the town of Utrecht, in the Kingdom of Holland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Apparatus for Effecting the Sale of Cigars, Cigarettes, and other Articles, (for which a patent has been granted in England on the 28th of February, 1887, No. 3,078,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic apparatus for effecting the sale of cigars, cigarettes, and other small articles; and it consists of a device, by means of which'cigars, cigarettes, or
l other articles for sale are delivered when a coin of certain value, size, and weight is inserted in an opening or slot in the casing. The inserted coin effects the release of a pawl or catch gearing into a recess or cavity ot' a sliding lever or bar, which can be so operated from the outside of the apparatus that one of the cigars, cigarettes, or other objects is delivered. This slide operates a roller with suitablecavity for receiving a cigar, cigarette, 0r other object, which passes from the said cavity onto an inclined plane and from'th'ence into a receptacle outside the said apparatus. The slide interrupts the fall of the coin until the said slide is again operated, the coin remaining visible behind a glass plate, so as to control'the action of the apparatus.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 an elevation with the casing partly broken away and the slide in dilerent positions.
a is the casing, which incloses the entire mechanism; b, the slot into which the coin is inserted, and b the canal for guiding the said coin.
c is a two-armed pawllever,with its fulcrum at c.
The coin descends onto the longer arm of the lever, while the forward arm, which is given the shape of a pawl or hook, gears into a corresponding recess or cavity, c, in the slide or sliding rod d, when the longer leverarm is freed from the coin, thus arresting all further movement of the slide until a fresh coin or coins is or are inserted, thus causing a depression of the longer arm of the pawllever and a freeing of the pawl from its gear with the cavity c2 in the slide d. A stud or l projection, d', on the upper surface of the slide d serves to operate thelonger arm of thelever c, and thus force the pawl into gear with the recess c2 ofthe slide d, which latter can be operated from the outside of the apparatus. The slide is arranged immediately behind a glass or other transparent plate, e, and is provided with a recess, d2, into which the coin from the guide, groove, or canal b falls, and is retained by the'blocl; f. The slide effects the release of the object to be sold by operating on a pin or stud, g', of the roller g and causing a partial rotation of the same.
The Aobjects for' sale are arranged in a receptacle, h, which, as represented in Fig. 1, can end in an inclined guideway, h', so that the cigars or other objects lie one behind the other in the said guideway, or the inclined guideway can be omitted, so that the cigars, cigarettes, or other objects come in direct contact with the roller or drum g, the cavity or recess in which is so arranged that only one cigar or cigarette can enter-'the same at one and the same time, as represented by Fig. 2.
The form of the cavity or recess in the roller or drum can be varied according to the purpose required and the object to be sold. For instance, Fig. 1 shows an angular, and Fig. 2 an o val, cavity or recess.
The angular form facilitates the delivery of a cigar or cigarette into the guideway t' and the receptacle i', arranged outside the apparatus, so that the cigar, cigarette, or other ob ject is readily accessible to the purchaser. The. apparatus operates in the following manner: The coin insertedthrough the slot b depresses the longer arm of the lever c and releases the pawl from the cavity or recess c2, when the slidcd can be operated. The roller or drum g is partially rotated and the obj ectin the cavity or recess caused to fall into the incline or into the guideway i3, and from thence into the dish or receptacle i. The stud or projection d to the slide d only permits a gradual descent of the long arm of the lever o by the friction existing between the top of the said stud or pin d and the lower curved surface of the lever c, so that the said coin can only pass into the canal or guideway f when the lever c reaches the position as represented by Fig.
2. The slide can, if desired, be retnrnedby means of an appropriate spring, so that the coin falls into a recess, d2, of the same and remainsvisible in the same until the apparatus is again set in operation and a coin inserted, whereupon the rst coin falls out of the cavity d2 into a coin-receptacle, and the second coin, after completed operation, remains in the position in the slide-recess d2 formerly occupied by the first coin. The movement of the slide is limited by means of suitable stops, k 7e.
Although I have only described and shown one modification of my improved apparatus, it will be evident to all acquainted with the art that the parts of my said apparatus and the arrangement of the same can be varied in many Ways without departing from the nature of my invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I elaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an automatic apparatus for vending cigars, cigarettes, and other articles, the co1nbination, with a ease or receptacle havinga eoin-receiving slot and chute and a merchanto said roller or drum and adapted to recipy recate the same, and having a notched top face and an upwardly-projecting stud, and a lever having pivotal bearing within the case, and having a pawl or hook at its front end to engage the notch in said slide, and an extended tail to receive the impact of the descending coin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the slide d, having notch c2 in its upper face, and aeoin-receiving recess, d2, the coinholding block f, merchandise receiving and discharging drum g, connected with and adapted to be operated by said slide, and a pivotal slidelocking lever, (l, having at its front end a pawl to engage the notch c2 in said slide, and an extended tail to receive the impact of the descending coin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
