v invention relates to novel improvements in rilies and has for its principal ob ject the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly cflicient in use.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing, (A) indicates a rifle of suitable construction, the stock of the same, and (C) the shoulder rest formed of suitable material.

Formed in the stock (B) is a longitudinally arranged storage compartment or pocket 5, into which the cartridges 6 are stored, the compartment being of a Width a trifle larger than the diameter of the cartridges stored therein, preferably in the position shown in Fig. 1. The storage compartment 5 is provided with an entrance opening 7 through which the cartridges pass, said miti-ance opening being formed in the side of the stock and closed by a slidable door 8, mounted to slide in suitable guides 9 formed on a plate 10, fixed tothe stock B by suitable screu' members 11, said door being provided with an operating knob 12 projecting through a slot 13 formed in plate l0.- The Serial No. 584,813.

slidable door S is prevented from accidental movement through the medium of a leaf spring 1l engaging the inner surface thereof and mounted in a recess l5 as shown in Fig. 3.

The outer portion, or rather the portion of the storage compartment adjacent the entrance opening 7, is curved in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. the purposes of which being such that when the cartridges are forced toward the entrance opening 7 through a spring controlled plate 16, the cartridges will ride on the curved surface 17 guiding the same toward the entrance opening 7, Where they are received, one at a time into the palm of the hand, when the slidabl-e door is in open position.

lWhile I have provided a spring controlled plate 16 for the purpose of moving the cartridges toward the entrance opening it is to be understood that this provision may be dispensed with, if desired, and when such is the case, by tilting the barrel of the gun upwardly, the cartridges 6 Will be caused to roll toward the entrance opening 7.

By the provision of a storage compartment for ammunition as herein described, a number of cartridges can be carried Within the stock of the gun and thereby dispensing with the necessity of carrying eXtra ammunition in a belt or the like.

`While have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect. this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invent-ion. l, there.- fore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A rifle including a stock having a storage compartmentformed therein and an entrance opening formed in the side of the stool; with a curved portion leading to the compartment. a closure member for said opening, and a spring for retaining said member in closed position.

2. A rifle including a stock having a longitudinally arranged storage compartment formed therein and an entrance opening formed in the side of. the stock 'With a curved fil.)
