To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ivan H. P. COLLEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in copy-holders for typewriters and comprises means whereby a book or paper may be conveniently supported either upon the frame of the typewriter or adj acent thereto, and so arranged that the leaves of the book or the copy may be held in convenientposition with reference to the operator and also comprises means whereby books of various thicknesses and sizes may be held open and the leaves flat.

The invention comprises further various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved copy-holder shown as attached to the frame of a typewriter. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear of the copy-holder, F ig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the construction shown in Fig. 2. shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a perspective view showing a slight modification of the extensible means upon the copy-holder. Fig. 11 is a perspective view showing means for holding a copy-book upon the copy-holder. Fig. 12 is a modification of the extension means for holding the thick side of a book lower than the face of the plate of the copyholder; Fig. 13 is a detail view of the clamping member shown in Fig. 11 for clamping the cover of a copy book to a board resting upon the plate of the copyholder. Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate two clamping members adapted to fit over the upper and lower edges of the horizontally disposed portion of the frame A of a typewriter, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, said clamping members being held together by means of screws A The clamping member A has a socket A for the reception of the shank portion 13 of the copy-holder frame B. Said socket A has a boss A projecting therefrom which is apertured to receive an adjusting screw A which has a spring a bearing between a jam nut a and the head of the screw to prevent said jam nut from turning. The inner end of the screw A is adapted to bear frictionally against the shank B to hold the copy-holder in an adjusted position. Said frame of the copy-holder has a plate C with angled ends C. and C 'secured thereto, which plate is riveted or otherwise suitably secured Extending underneath the plate and integral with the frame B are the projections B shown in Figs. 2 and 9 of the drawings, and to which shelves the plate is secured. The end C of said plate is recessed away as at 0* in two places to allow the projections B to pass therethrough, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Rods B are fastened to said frame B and extend through registering apertures in the angled ends Cand C of said plate, the free ends of the rods B projecting beyond the end of the plate C a short distance for the purpose of receiving the connecting unions D, each of which has an angled extension D to receive a set screw D which is mounted in a threaded opening in the extension D, and a spring 03 is interposed between the head of each screw 1) and a jam nut d thereon and serves to hold the jam nut from loosening.

Projecting from the frame B of the copyholder are the arms 13*, shown clearly in the perspective view Fig. 2 of the drawings, and pins B and B are mounted in apertures in said arms 13*.

E designates a clip catch which is pivotally mounted upon the ends of the pin 13 and said clip catch has a jaw E, shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings, adapted to be held by means of a spring E against the face of the plate O or a copy resting upon the latter. Said spring has portions thereof coiled about the pin B and the ends of the spring bear frictionally against the pin B, one of which ends is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and a portion of the spring which is bent upon itself to form a loop bears yieldingly against the under edge of the bracket shaped portion of the clip catch, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. At each end of the jaw E of the clip catch are the boxings E the under edges of which are recessed as at E forming shoulders E against which the bracket shaped rod E is positioned, as shown clearly in the detail View Fig. l of the drawings. The parallel portions of the rod E are adapted to be held yieldingly against the leaves of a book or copy upon the plate and it will be noted that, as the rod E is pivotally mounted in apertures in the lugs E of the clip catch, the latter will have a swinging movement upon the pin B independent of the rod E whereby the jaw E may be swung to a horizontal position if desired, as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, in which position the rod IE will be held parallel with the plate of the copy-holder. When the clip catch takes a thick bite, as shown in Fig. 8, the upper lug IE only presses upon the book and the lower end of the book falls back against the copy stop formed upon the frame B. Spring-pressed pins F are mounted one in each of the boxings E and the inner end of each pin is designed to be held yieldingly against the copy resting upon the copy-holding plate. In the event of it being desired to conveniently hold the copy-book or paper which may extend beyond the end of the plate of the copy-holder, tubular extension rods E, shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, are provided which telescope over the parallel portions of the rod E.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings will be seen two clamping jaws G and G through which an adjusting screw G passes and the inner face of each of said jaws G and G is recessed out to receive the rod B Integral with the jaw G is an extension Gr which is apertured to receive the angled rod G which is provided for the purpose of supporting a book or copy in different positions upon the copy-holder plate. A set screw H is mounted in the extension G in a threaded aperture therein and its inner end is adapted to bear frictionally against the inner end of the rod Gr to hold the same in adjusted position. A jam nut H is mounted ed upon the threaded shank of the screw H and a spring H bears between the jam nut and the head H of the screw to hold. the jam nut from turning.

Referring to Fig. 1. of the drawings will be seen a rod I, one end of which telescopes within the connection D and has an upwardly bent portion I and the free end of the rod I rests upon an extension rod J which telescopes within the connecting union I) upon the end of the lower rod B, this modification being provided for the purpose of raising the outer side of a book a little higher for convenience in reading, and mounted upon the extension rod J is a clip catch K held in an adjusted position by means of the screw K and said clip catch K is provided for the purpose of holding down the leaves of the book which are turned back upon the extension rod J.

Referring to Fig. 8 of the drawings will be seen a rod N which is held in one of the unions D and has an upwardly bent portion N provided for the same purpose for which the upturned portion I, shown in Fig. 1, is designed and, in the modification shown in Fig. 8, the free end of the rod N extends toward the copy-holder and has an angled end N which rests upon one end of an arm of the rod 13 In this modification, one of the connecting unions D and the extended rod J illustrated in Fig. 1 are dispensed with and the angled end N rests upon, as before stated, a projecting'end of the rod B.

In Fig. 10 of the drawings is still another modification of the invention, in which the rod O is mounted upon an extension rod Q, which telescopes within the connecting union D and is provided with an adjusting screw 0 which holds the rod 0 in an adjusted position upon the rod Q. In said modification shown in Fig. 10, the free end of the rod 0 rests upon an extension rod J, which latter also carries an adjustable yoke M having two screws M, one of which serves to hold the member in an adjusted position upon the rod J, while the other serves to hold the angled rod R in an adjusted position. Said rod R is provided for the same purpose as the rod G before described and serves to hold a leaf or book forming the copy upon the copy-holder and extension rods thereof. In each instance, the upper portion of the rods R and G is adapted to frictionally engage the under portion of the upper arm of the rod 13 In Fig. 11 of the drawings, I have illus- 'a modification of the extension means of the copy-holder, comprising an angled member L having bosses L apertured to receive the ends of the rods B and L and L designate set screws for holding the member L in an adjusted position upon said rods. In the angled ends of the member L are apertures for the reception of the rods L upon one of which is mounted one of said yokes M.

In operation, when a copy or leaf of a book of any kind is placed upon the copy holding plate, if the copy consists of a leaf or a thin book, the aw E of the clip catch will serve to frictionally hold the copy while the Springpressed pins at the ends of the jaw will also serve to bear frictionally against the copy and the arms of the rod IE will serve to hold the copy flat against the plate or board and, by the provision of the extensible mechanism shown and described, the copy-holder is adapted for use with books of various sizes and so arranged that the faces of the leaves of the book may be held in convenient position to be read by the operator, the various parts being easily applied to or removed from the plate of the copy-holder to adapt the apparatus for various uses.

What I claim to be new is 1. A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a copy holding plate and support therefor, a clip catch pivotally mounted upon said copy holder, and spring press but tons and boxings therefor mounted upon said clip catch and adapted to bear against the face of said copy holding plate, as set forth.

2. A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a copy holding plate and support therefor, a clip catch pivotally mounted upon said copy-holder, spring press buttons and boxings therefor mounted upon said clip catch and adapted to bear against the face of said copy holding plate, and an angled rod mounted upon the clip catch and adapted to engage under shoulders formed in the boxings of said spring press buttons, as set forth.

8. A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a copy holding plate and support therefor, a clip -catch pivotally mounted upon said copy-holder, spring press buttons and boxings therefor mounted upon said clip catch and adapted to bear against the face of said copy holding plate, an angled rod mounted upon the clip catch and adapted to engage under shoulders formed in the boxings of said spring press buttons, and extension tubes telescoping over the parallel portions of said angled rod, as set forth.

A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a plate havin its opposite ends bent at angles, one of said angled ends being recessed, a frame which is fastened to the recessed angled end of said plate and having project-ions extending through the recesses in said angled end of the plate, and a spring clip catch secured to said copy-holder, as

A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a plate having its opposite ends bent at angles, said ends being provided with registering apertures, one of said angled ends being recessed, a frame to which the recessed angled end of said plate is fastened, projections from said frame, lugs upon said frame, a spring clip catch secured to said lugs, and rods fastened at their inner ends to said frame and extending through said registering apertures in the angled ends of said plate, as set forth.

6. A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a plate having its opposite ends bentat angles, said ends being provided with registering apertures, one of said angled ends being recessed, a frame to which the recessed angled end of said plate is fastened, projections from said frame, extending through the recesses in the angled end of the plate, a clip catch secured to said copy-holder, rods fastened at their inner ends to the frame and extending through said registering apertures in the angled ends of said plate, a clamping member and means for holding the same in adjusted positions upon one of said rods, and an angled rod held by said clamping member, as set forth.

7. A copy-holder for typewriters, compris ing a copy holding plate and means for supporting the same, a clip catch mounted thereon, rods secured to said plate, extension rods held to the rods fastened to said plate, a yoke mounted upon one of said extension rods, means for fastening said yoke to the rod upon which it is mounted, an angled rod mounted in said yoke and a thumb screw for holding the same in an adjusted position, the shank portion of said angled rod adapted to bear against one of said extension rods to preventits angled end from tilting backward, and means upon one of said extension rods for holding the outer side of an open book, as set forth;

A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a copy holding plate and means for sup porting the same, a clip catch mounted thereon, rods secured to said plate, extension rods held to the rods fastened to said plate, a yoke mounted upon one of said extension rods, means for fastening the yoke to the rod upon which it is mounted, an angled rod mounted upon said yoke, a thumb screw for holding the same in adjusted position, the shank portion of said angled rod adapted to bear against one of said extension rods to prevent its angled end from tilting backward, and means adjustably held upon one of the extension rods and resting upon the other of said extension rods for support-ing a book above the face of said plate, as set forth.

9. A copy-holder for typewriters, comprising a copy holding plate and means for supporting the same, a clip catch mounted thereon, rods secured to said plate, extension rods held to the rods fastened to said plate, a yoke mounted upon one of said extension rods, means for fastening the yoke to the rod upon which it is mounted, an angled rod mounted upon said yoke, a thumb screw for holding the same in adjusted position, the shank portion of said angled rod adapted to bear against one of said extension rods to prevent its angled end from tilting backward, a supporting rod having an aperture to receive one of the extensible rods, means for holding the supporting rod in an adjusted position, the latter having an upturned portion adapted to support a book, and its free end resting upon an extension rod, as set forth.

10. A copy-holder for typewriters comprising, in combination with the copy holding plate and support therefor, a clip catch mounted upon the latter, rods held by the plate, an extension rod connected to one of the rods held by said plate, a clip catch upon said extension rod, and means secured to one of the rods which is held by said plate for holding a book or copy above the upper surface of the plate, as set forth.

11. A copy-holder for typewriters comprising, in combination with the copy hold ing plate and support therefor, a clip catch mounted upon the latter, rods held by the plate, an extension rod connected to one of the rods held by said plate, a clip catch upon said extension rod, means secured to one of the rods which is held by said plate for holding a book or copy above the upper surface of the plate, one end of said copy supporting member adapted to rest upon the extension rod, as set,forth.
