Be it knownthat I, HERMAN L. WELCH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at El Centro, in the county of Imperial and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in `the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to copy holders, and `more particularly to a type of copy holder adapted to *be arranged upontlie top of a desk, such for instance as desks to which typewriters may be rigidly secured.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a copyholder which may be conveniently .arranged upon the top of a typewriter desk in such manner that the copy may be held conveniently in a position above and adjacent thetypewriter on the desk. i V l It is a further object of the invention to provide a copy holder which may be connected to the desk in such manner that the carrier oi the copy `holder may be conveniently turned by the operator from a position immediately "above the typewriter as when the notes are being transcribed, to a position swung out of the way to permit the ready removal or insertionl of typewriter. y

The copy liolderlhere shown comprises an lupright or `column 2 of suitable proportions and material, andwhich is preferably tubular to provide for the reception of an upper sectionB which has its lower portion turned cylindricallyso as to be rotatively mounted in the socket or lower section 2. The upper portion or section 3 of the upright is adapted to receiveasiiitabletype of slide 4L whichis provided` with a slideway 5 having a cross sectional contourl corresponding tothe cross section of thel top section 3, such for instance Vbeing indicated as of clove-tail outline. The

Another vimportant feature of my invention consists in y"the provision ofmeans whereby during the transcription of notes from the copy to the machine-the approximate area or Zone of the lines on thecopy whicli is-beingtranscribedl can be indicated with facility and great-ly increasetherapidity of' transcription by the operator. YTo that end I have provided anindicator comprising a pointer 201m thefforin of a cylinder 'wirefforinstance, which is disposed lin a horizontal plane across the front of the" car-iier' frame 1G, one end of the pointer being-'seouredin a slide 21 which is slidably mounteduponithe frame in any suitable manner. As' here shown7 theslidc .is in thel fornvof 1a block A,having itsv longf y wires 23 between which the block `slidesvertically from the top shelf 18 `downwardly toward the shelf 19 of the carrier. To control the movement of the block 21 there may be attachedto it at` its opposite ends an endless cord 24 which passes over a suitable guide 25 mounted on thetop 18 ofthe i carrier, this latter being provided with: apertures 25 through which the cord may travel, and the lower end of the endless cord 24C is directed around a suitable guide as '26 secured to the lower side of the bottom shelf 19. The plane of the vloop of the endless band or belt 24 is shown as per pendicular to the front plane of the carrier 16, and the rear stretch of the belt passes between gripping jaws of .suitable means tor gripping and moving the endless belt in step by step operation. This actuating means is shown as comprising a lever 27 pivoted at 28 upon a convenient portion of the trame 16 and disposed at the rear side thereof, one end of the lever carrying a pivoted finger key 29, Figs. 1 and 6, which projects laterally from one side of the frame of the carrier so as to be'within convenient reach of the operator. Connected to one end of the finger key or lever 29 there is provided a link 30 which extends parallel along the lever 27 and is connected at its opposite end to an upright jaw 31 which is pivoted at 32 to the contiguous end of the lever 27. This latter is providedwith an offset jaw 27 in the plane of the face of the jaw 31.
In operation when the operator depresses the lever 29 the first or initial movement is transmitted through the link 30 to the pivoted jaw 31 and this l'is swung against the intervening cord 24- whereby this latter is pressed against the jaw 27. Thereafter continued downward movement of the pivoted key 29 and the adjacent end of the lever 27 causes the cord to be lifted by the pinchingjaws 31 and 27 a limited and suitable degree. To normally hold the lever 27 in suitable position, this latter is connected by aspring 33 to a convenient and fixed portion of the carrier frame 16, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring compressing under pressure otl the key lever 29 and expanding again when pressure is removed from the key, thus returning the parts to normal position.
From the ,foregoing it willbe seen that I have provided a copy holder which is readily adjustable to the top of a suitable desk, table or other support, and may be clamped to the same without in any way mutilating or inj uring thedesk or table structure or surface, and I have provided a holder adapted to be so adjusted as to support the copy to be i transcribed in a position above the typewriter, means being provided for preventing the overbalanced weight carried by the upright 2 from tilting the carrier orholder. I have `also provided means whereby the operator may readily determine the area or j portion of the notes being transcribed, and
which means may be operated with` convenience and rapidity :by the operator.
In the form of the clamp shown in Fig. S the lever 27 carries awxed part luand oppose-d to it is a clamp jaw 27 pivoted at 27h on the lever. The jaw grips when the lever moves up and freely releases on the downward movement thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A copy holder, adapted for attachment to a desk, comprising `an upright, a copy carrier attached thereto, a base for the upright having rests, one ot' which is longitudinally adjustable in said base and adapted to be arranged parallel along one edge o the desk and the other oit which is adjustable and adapted to extend transversely thereto to the side of the desk, and means for embracing the transverse rest to the edge of the desk and prevent tilting.
2. A copy holder, adapted for attachment `to a desk, comprising an upright, a copy carrier attached thereto, a base for the npright having adjustable rests, one of which is within the side planes ot the upright and is adapted to be arranged parallel along one edge of the desk and is adjustable longitudinally with respect to the upright and the other to extend transversely thereto and comprises a slotted section attached to the base and an extensible section connected thereto, and means for securing the transverse rest to the edge of the desk to preventv tilting.
3. In a copy holder, an upright comprising a socket member and a rotary post, a copy carrier thereon, a foot bar adjustable transversely in said member, and an extensible rest connected to the latter perpenmounted in said member, an extensible rest connected to thelatter in and interlocking with the foot bar, and a resilient clip for embracing said rest and the desk top to hold the upright againsttilting.
