SWEAT-BAND FOR HATS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that NEWMAN R. MARSH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Sweat-Bands for Hats; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sweat-bands for hats, and more particularly to a device of this character which is adapted for attachment to the usual sweat-band of a gentlemans hat, or direct to the body of the hat itself.
The object of the invention is to provide a sweat-band which may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from the usual sweat-band, or body of the hat, and which will protect the hat from sweat or grease.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereafter described and claimed. n
Figure 1, is a drawing showing` ordinary hat sweat-band with my attachable and detachable band made of transparent celluloid, or of any non-absorbing material, fast to it. Fig. 2, shows a regular sweat-band having slots in it. Fig. 3, is an end view of an attachable and detachable band showing ears and soft metal pieces to better advantage mounted on it. Fig. 4, an interior view of a hat with rim cut away, showing attachable sweat-bands applied to body of hat direct. Fig. 5, an improved locking eye provided with a delicate spring. Fig. 6, shows original band, Fig. 2, with printed or marked places F, on it, for indicating places to cut slots. Fig. 7, a view of ear before turned over, provided with a small slot, for engaging said spring.
Similar parts through the several drawings will be lettered alike.
Drawing Fig. 1 at A. is shown an attachable band, preferably of thin transparent Celluloid, which will not alter the general Specification of Letters Patent.
appearance of the hat, made fast to regular band B, by means of the turned over ears, C. C. C. on attachable band. These ears being bent over at O. 0. O. leaving the ends E. E. E. free, as shown better in drawing Fig. 3, side view by similar letters.
To attach the attachable band to regular band B, the free ends of the ears C. C. C. are inserted into the slots in regular band B., Fig. 2, at F. F. F., and pushed up. G. G. Gr. on attachable band show pieces of soft metal attached to it at V. V. V. These pieces, after the ears C. C. C. are pushed up in regular band B., are bent over its upper edge at H. H. H. These pieces hold the attachable band in' place on regular band B; and are of soft metal and can easily be bent over by the ngers.
Drawing Fig. 4L. shows attachable bands made fast to body of hat direct; the ears entering slots in body of hat at I. I. I. l. pushed up as in the regular band and made fast by the same metal pieces entering slots J. J. J. and bent over. There will be two of these attachable bands, one in front and one in rear, overlapping each other, but not made fast at their ends, as shown by letters S. S. dotted lines, these ends being left free for self adjustment.
Drawing Fig. 5, shows what I term, an improved locking eye which may be employed in holding attachable bands to body of hat. These eyes are attached to body by means of the turned over ends C. C. being passed through body of hat and then bent over, the number of these eyes corresponding with the number of the ears, on said bands. In employing these locking eyes; the ears are pushed up into them in the same way until they engage the little spring a. mounted on body of locking eye, the turned over ears having a small slot w. for engaging the said spring. These springs are mounted on locking eyes at a. overlapping slightly body of eye at b. Vhen these ears are turned over in drawing Fig. 7 and are pushed up into locking eyes, the little slots in ears Fig. 7, will engage the small spring, and said spring will snap into small slot, and hold band from being withdrawn; to

devices, fast to its upper edge for passing through body of hat, and bent over as shown and described. Y y
